Yes the Google play versions will work on Sprint, you just have to get a sim card for the phone first. You can get one at either a local corporate store or by calling in & speaking to a rep, an international rep will be the preferred dept, but you can get it through care as well.Sprint told me that they are only getting the 32gb midnight blue version. When I asked if more sizes and colors were coming they said the rest are only available on Google Play. And they also said that the didn't know if the Google Play version could be used on Sprint.
I know it's stupid, just posting it here.

Sounding like the issues with the Nexus 6 all over again. Can't get it activated via chat. They said the MEID isn't in the system. They said if I go to a Sprint store they should be able to activate it. I'll head there this evening.

So I used my lunch to run to the Sprint store. They tried a few things and even called into support. They can't activate it, it's not in their system. They said only ones directly from Sprint or from Google Play. They said I'd have to call Motorola.
Was it a repair or corporate store? Those are the only ones that can activate it. All other Sprint stores are just useless

It was a corporate store with a repair center. I'm on the line with Motorola right now.
Hmmm that's very weird. This launch is getting progressively worse.

So I was able to speak to someone at Moto that seems to understand the issue and he is going to be reaching out to some Sprint contacts and get back to me with an update later today.
Here is something from S4GRU on the subject.

Well I'm on a thin line with Sprint right now. I'm really thinking of going to T-Mobile next Wednesday and getting the 64 GB version. Sprint's speeds has been really agitating. I haven't really closed the door on Sprint yet....but its getting close. If there is any glimmer of light...a couple of factors have to play in.
1.) Are they going to carry the 64 GB option?
2.) Are they ever going to fix their network? Time is ticking Sprint.
The longer you wait on Sprint the more you pay for LTE data that you're not getting! They can offer unlimited data all day every day, but their data is so inconsistent and slow that you'll never really reach any kind of data limits! That's why they're unlimited! I was with Sprint for over ten years and been buying their 4g and LTE phones ever since they had them and, TBH, I never really got consistent 4g or LTE speeds. I switched to T-Mobile and the difference was night and day for me! Was knocking myself in the head for paying so much money to Sprint for all of those lte/4g years with really substandard service! Sprint was supposedly going to get LTE service in my area following my October 2011 purchase of my HTC EVO 4G LTE! There's still no LTE service in my area of Sacramento CA and my T-Mobile LTE is off the meter good in the same damn area!

I wouldn't take the advice of the bullies of that site. Here is something from S4GRU on the subject.

All depends on where you are. My LTE came on last December and it's been pretty good ever since. Some issues, but that's to be expected. The longer you wait on Sprint the more you pay for LTE data that you're not getting! I've seen confirmation that people that have gotten the phone directly from moto and have gotten it activated on Verizon just by swapping an activated sim. Crazy that Sprint is more locked down than Verizon.
