Google Nexus 6 on T-Mobile

Re: T-mobile has them on the floor

Went to T-mobile and saw a section for the Nexus 6. Unfortunately, there were none on display. What a tease. Manager took my name down and will call me once available. Apparently, there's a list of people.

Re: T-mobile has them on the floor

I played with it also. It is not bright enough.

I'm thinking of refusing delivery since I cannot cancel.
Yeah that's the same issue with me bit still might buy it.. Idk. Hopefully I can get it and compare more in depth with my note 4

If you go into it knowing the display/battery/camera is better on the Note 4, it makes the decision easier. I think you can definitively say the Note 4 is the better device overall, but having pure Android on the Nexus 6 is going to be enough for some people to make that sacrifice.

Oh, the sacrifices one must make in life.
It's overwhelming.

It's blown out of proportion on both sides, though. It's not like the camera is unusable, the battery dies in 10 minutes, and the display looks like a 720p panel on the Nexus 6. And it's not like Touchwiz renders a phone unusable or that it's so slow you feel like you're using the OG Droid. I mean, look at my home screen. Aside from the settings/recent apps/notification shade, this device looks/runs like pure Android, but I can still use all the Samsung features like multiwindow and the S Pen.

The question is simple; how bad do you want pure Android on your phone? If it outweights everything else, the Nexus 6 is your best bet. If it's not all that important to you, there's better choices out there.

Re: T-mobile has them on the floor

Having own the N5 for a year, and played with the N6 for 30 minutes, I can tell you that I rather have my N5 back.
Too late, since I sold it and my N6 is shipping already.

Not wanting to discourage anyone. Just my personal observation.

Re: T-mobile has them on the floor

Actually found a store with the phone on the floor and played with it for about 15-20 minutes. Basically, if you're worried about the camera in the slightest, I wouldn't be. Without HDR mode on, it took pictures instantaneously with no trouble and they looked great. With HDR on, it was about a full second delay until the picture was done being taken. Honestly, comparing the pics I took, I would keep HDR off for normal, off-the-cuff pictures you're taking that don't need to be as beautiful as possible and you'll be fine. The HDR did obviously make it look better, and I couldn't move the phone far off it's holder to try different kinds of pictures of different spots of the store, but only slightly to my eye. It isn't 100% necessary and you should be fine without it. Just save it for more important times where the photo really matters and you'll be set.

And to whomever was asking about taking a bunch of pictures then going to the gallery to see if it lags on loading, the unit I used pulled up the gallery no problems. However, if I tried doing a quick swipe through a bunch of the photos there was a noticeable amount of lag, but it was very slight for me. I forgot to check if there was an option to look at photos in the gallery through a column/row set-up, but if there was, that's what I would probably be using and at that point I couldn't see lag being a problem.

As far as screen goes, sadly the criticisms about the screen brightness do have merit to them. My HTC EVO 4G LTE has a brighter screen with both at max brightness and auto-brightness turned off, but there was never a time where it wasn't bright enough for me and it was something that I couldn't use. Also, it does seem not as vivid, but I think these are things that will be most readily apparent if you're doing a direct screen comparison with another phone right next to you. Once I was spending time just with the N6 my eyes stopped noticing the differences it had been a few minutes ago and I was just in awe of how big of a phone this really is.

Transitions within apps and the app drawer were 100% smooth as everybody else has commented on. The back did pick up a little bit of smudging/finger-print grease, but honestly not as bad as what I've heard (coming from an EVO I've dealt with much more noticeable marks on the back haha). Also if you're like me and weren't a big fan of the powder blue trim around the phone, it honestly looks much better than I expected and is much more subtle than some of the pictures of the phone that I've seen so don't worry about that. The speakers are strong and I didn't even put them at 100% due to interrupting the rest of the people in the store nearby me, but they should be more than enough for every person who lists that as something important and is okay with one step below Boomsound.

I'll update this if I remember more things, but like I said the main thing you'll really notice is how big this phone is. In my opinion the Note 4 really does have a nicer look to it design wise, but I'm won over with the Nexus and real excited to hopefully pick it up from Sprint tomorrow. Also I was not expecting the Nexus to be as thin as it is, and am honestly very happy I have a Spigen Neo-Hybrid coming in to help it feel more substantial. The only other thing I can think of is that I couldn't get a normal hold on the phone due to the security tether, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was a little bit slippery as well. Hope this helps some of you guys out, and if you're on the fence between a Note or a Nexus, my opinion would be that at this point there's really no way to wrong and seeing it at the store really confirmed that for me.

Edit: An important last note is that within the notification drawer it was asking me to do an update to Lollipop, so any stutters from the gallery or HDR could actually be less than what I saw.

Re: T-mobile has them on the floor

Wait nevermind, this is the most important part. If you're in Southern California, the Mission Viejo mall is where I was and the girl I talked to said they were infact selling the phone today for T-Mobile and had a few in the back so feel free to go in and get one.

I agree Touchwiz is not that bad and should not be discounted unless you are a die hard pure Android fan but to reduce the decision down to only this is ridiculous as there are no better choices for someone that wants a 6 inch screen, world class cell radios, and top notch build quality.

The camera is on par with the best smartphones available and the battery should get most people through an entire day..

As far as screen brightness goes it is fine in a bright room with autobrightness and you could always turn this up more if you like. If your main application is a usinging it with sunlight shining directly on it because you work as a life guard in the Bahamas then perhaps not but again suggesting this phone is *only* about pure android is untrue.

Re: T-mobile has them on the floor

I went to T-Mobile for a second time to checkout the Nexus 6. The phone was still not out on display so the manager had to go to the back to get the phone for me. The manager had the Note 4 as his personal phone so I was able to put both phones side by side, honestly the Note 4's display is noticeably better then the Nexus 6. Colors on the Note 4's display looked more rich, vivid, and sharp compared to the Nexus 6. The Nexus 6 has a maximum brightness of 270 nits compared to the Note 4's display that has a maximum brightness of 468 nits. The screen brightness of the Nexus 6 seriously holds it back in my opinion. I did the same by putting the Nexus 6 next to the iPhone 6/6+ and came to the same conclusion. The manager and I ended up putting the Note 4 and the Nexus 6 side by side to take a picture (both phones used the google camera app). Both phones were fast to take pictures, the quality of the pictures looked good on both phones, I did notice that the colors were more accurate on the Nexus 6, but the Note 4 had more detail when zooming into an object in the photo (probably because the Note 4 has a 16mp rear camera compared to the 13mp rear camera on the Nexus 6). I was able to test out HDR+ this time around, its true that HDR+ takes awhile to process. Clicking the HDR+ mode on the Nexus 6 takes a second to load, after taking a picture with HDR+ the Nexus 6 takes 1-2 seconds to process the photo until you are able to take another photo, and if you swipe left to see that HDR+ photo then the phone needs another 1-2 seconds to finish processing the HDR+ photo. I'm not going to lie, this seriously has made me second guess whether I will be keeping this phone or returning it to go back to the Note 4 or to the iPhone 6/6+, only time will tell....

How bright is 270 nits? About if I turn my iPhone 6 plus around 60%?

Re: T-mobile has them on the floor

Supposedly there was an update to the Turbo at launch time that increased the brightness after that review tested it and it had a low nit score fwiw. I haven't compared it at Verizon.

Re: T-mobile has them on the floor

I had it and returned it, I always seemed to want to keep it on full brightness. Really just couldn't connect with that phone for reasons more than just the screen though.

The Droid Turbo has 248 nits maximum brightness compared to the Nexus 6 having a maximum brightness of 270 nits.

If your concern is to have the best camera, you don't get the Nexus 6. That's both in image quality and user experience. If your concern is to have the best battery life, you don't get the Nexus 6. If you want the best display, you don't get the Nexus 6. If you want an SD card and a removable battery, you don't get the Nexus 6.

You keep mentioning the 6 inch screen---take the on screen buttons into account and it's probably smaller than the Note. You keep mentioning the "world class cell radios", but that's just based on prior history with Moto. There's been a few reviews, most notably on this site with Phil and Jerry, that say the radios weren't as strong as other devices. That's been a Nexus issue before. Build quality is great. No denying that one, but it's not anything I'd say tops the M8, iPhone 6, or even the Note now that it has a metal frame with chamfered edges. You can't even use the thing on a flat surface without it wobbling all over the place.

Simply put, and I'm sorry to be the one to have to tell you this, but you're not getting the best phone available. You're getting the best phone available for YOU because it's your preference. Unfortunately you're a tad bit too into this phone to acknowledge it's shortcomings.
