Google Nexus 6 on T-Mobile

Re: Got it

They wouldn't let me buy it unless I signed up for their crap service. Tried two different locations.

Sign up then cancel once you have the phone. They can't force you to return the phone. They simply make you pay for the phone.

Re: My First Day Impressions

So the N6 is supposed to be encrypted, when you boot the phones does it require a Password/PIN (like it does in 4.4.4)?

Mine didn't require me to set up a PIN or Password.. and I never use one....

It's an option: Settings -> Security -> Screen Lock -> Pin -> Require pin to start device / No thanks.

I opened the box yesterday at 1:30 PM. I really like this phone (he tries to convince himself...) but it IS big. Going to take some getting used to.

That can be the problem.... Because once you get used to this device and it's size, it is so hard to go back to a smaller device. At least it is for me. I love the extra real estate and helps me with my old eyes.

Mine did the second time it rebooted due to an update but that's probably because I used the tap to set up method when first setting up the device. Probably carried over my security settings.

Re: My First Day Impressions

Less than 24 hours is not enough time to give a definitive review, but I can comment on a few things I've noticed:

-The touch screen response on this phone is excellent. Typing on the keyboard, scrolling through apps..its all extremely fluid. That's a huge advantage that Nexus devices seen to have over their skinned brethren.

-Bluetooth has been excellent. It's paired to both my car and Fitbit extremely quick.

-Way too much has been made of this screen. I still have my Note 4 and you can tell the difference in viewing angles and max brightness, but this is a solid display. If you're coming from any other phone, I can't see how you'd notice anything wrong with it. Even still, it's more than adequate for me. Verdict is still out on how efficient it is and how that affects battery life, though. That's my only concern.

-This may be due to the updated build my device got on start up, but I'm not seeing the intermittent lag some of these reviewers are discussing. This phone is lightning quick and outside of an iPhone 6, it's the fastest device out there right now.

-I'm not sold on the power button placement. It causes me to readjust my grip every time. This phone could definitely use knock/tap to wake. That would make a huge difference and Lollipop is capable of it.

-I've said this earlier, but I may have been wrong about the camera. It's still not as fast as an iPhone 6 or Note 4 and the quality lags behind them in some cases, but HDR+ can make a big difference if you've got time to line up the shot. Also having the ability to manually set the exposure is helpful.

-It's early so this is grain of salt territory, but I haven't been overly impressed with the battery so far. A few charge cycles in and hopefully it changes.

I really liked the TAP to set up feature... That was pretty cool and probably why mine didn't have me set up a PIN either.... Didn't even think of that but I did love that feature going from the 5 to the 6....

Re: My First Day Impressions

Thanks for sharing. I played with the n6 at a T-Mobile today and I have my doubts now. The thing was huge, which was one of the reasons why I wanted it. But now I don't know. My phone will supposedly ship on December 9.

Might end up selling it or returning it.

Funny you say that, because after playing with it yesterday at the T-Mobile store, I thought it felt smaller than I imagined, perfect actually, and ordered one immediately.

I went to a T-Mobile store last Friday and played with the one they had on display for about 30 - 40 minutes... It was in that awkward and annoying anchor but after my 30 - 40 minutes I thought it felt very comfortable in the hand and not too big at all.... Now that I have my own and I've spent almost 24 hours with it.... It's a big phone.... It actually feels bigger than the display unit... Maybe the way I had to hold the phone because of that anchor made it feel smaller because in my mind I am compensating for the anchor....

For the most part I can operate the phone with ease one handed... but reaching for the back button or the notification bar at the top is a stretch for my thumb... More so than I originally thought playing with the demo... Maybe because this one is MINE but the reach for the back button or status bar makes me slightly uncomfortable one handed and I now already use my left hand to balance it when I make those extreme reaches.... I can do them one handed but for fear of dropping it (and ironically I did drop it last night on my kitchen tile and my heart skipped at least one beat.... and I wasn't using it just went to transfer it from my right to left hand and just flat out freaking dropped it..... Happy to say the way I dropped it was at an angle and it landed on the back with a case on and slide across my kitchen floor instead of a straight down impact drop)

Re: My First Day Impressions

I'm with you. I went to the T-Mobile store and 2 people were playing with the demo, so I just went to the guy and said I wanted the phone knowing that they only had 2 left from my phone call to them. I got the last one and they were visably upset.

Anyway, I actually thought it felt smaller in my hand then all these reviews made it out to be. I definitely don't have big hands, but this things feels fine and can be used 1 handed for basic browsing.

The issue for me has been case. I got two spigen cases. The slim armor makes the phone feel much bigger and heavier. The bumper case is actually quite nice feeling. Neither case has raised buttons for power/volume which is annoying when getting used to a new phone.

Overall though, this phone is lightning fast compared to my Galaxy S4. Everything is instantaneous.

One gripe is the vibrate is INTENSE on my desk right now. And I can't figure out if there's a way to turn down the intensity. Anyone?

Re: My First Day Impressions

I'll admit that when I received my Nexus 6 on Monday and started using it... I was not prepared for the massive size. I think a lot of us folks who pre-ordered were willing to accept it, but not necessarily ready for it. After three full days now, I feel like I'm finally starting to adjust and now really like it. My girlfriend and roommate both have Galaxy S5s, and when they handed me their phones to show me a picture, etc. the device just felt puny in comparison. When I hand them their phone back and pick up my Nexus, the 6-inch screen actually feels more comfortable and more normal. I think I may own this device for a long time.

Re: My First Day Impressions

Thanks for the impressions! How is the earpiece call volume? I returned the Moto X 2014 because I felt it was too low. The OPO and iPhone 6+ excel in this area. Any issues with the Nexus 6? Thanks!

Re: My First Day Impressions

I would like to add that the display is not going be bright enough (even on max brightness) while its sunny outside : /...

Re: Got it

didnt knwo it was the same at buying it from google play like tmobile where it is unlocked. cool.

any carriers selling the white one yet

It is not a dealbreaker for me by any means, but I feel it is a bit on the lower side compared to previous devices.

I find that has been the case with nearly every phone I have ever owned. Except for the Motorola StarTac. :)

Re: My First Day Impressions

After 24 hours I can say... It's big... It feels a lot bigger than the display unit I played around with in the T-Mobile store... It does comfortably fit in my khaki pockets, however with my Nexus 5 there were times I didn't even know it was in my pocket and had to actually feel around for it... Not a problem with the Nexus 6... You know it's in your pocket.... However big it's not so big I feel it's something I won't get use to... the reach to the back button or to the top of the device for the status bar is a stretch without readjusting your hand on the phone..

Build quality seems to be top notch.. Device seems to be very well made and very sturdy.... I have no worries here.

Display is beautiful.. Not as bright as my Nexus 5 but the difference is minimal in my opinion... Have not compared it side by side with anything else and don't really plan on it... I only compare it to what I was using over the last year and my wife's HTC One M8.... and the screen looks great.. In my comparison to my N5 light/white screens look dimmer but when I compared rich color pictures I felt the N6 was so much crisper and vibrant than on the N5.... Watching a few movie trailers and streaming some movies from my play account or Netflix the display looked just stunning.. again in comparison to the N5....

Camera... Only took a few pictures and they were using HDR and in good lighting.. At least in those conditions the pictures are super sharp specially when again comparing it to my Nexus 5 or even my wife's M8.... It should more than hold it's own for on the fly picture taking..

Battery..... it was at about 40% when I took it out the box and it lasted from 10 am to about 8:30 PM before it dropped below 5% remaining... but that is only about 1 hour 10 minutes of screen on time and a lot of downloading and updating over WiFi... So far this morning in mostly stand by at work the battery seems to be dropping quickly in stand by. but I am still adjusting settings and usually battery life gets better over time... Trying to avoid the charger as much as possible to get a better feel for batter life going forward...

performance.... I did my own test of opening apps vs my N5 by hitting them at the exact same time and yes the N6 is a hair slower than the N5... It's annoying when you do the side by side click and it's slower to open than the N5... but once you put the N5 away and go on about your day it's not noticeable in a way that would be frustrating... I also do not play any games at all.... so it may be a bigger issue for people who do gaming or specially highly intense graphic games.... Running speed test comparisons over WiFi and LTE the N6 was much faster than the N5 in every test in the same location at the same time... Not OMG HOW AMAZING faster but easily 20 - 25% quicker in speed test runs.....

Speakers..... WOW they are loud... not an audiophile person but there is no more tilting the phone or cupping my hand to direct the sound from the N5 mono speaker grill so I can hear it... It's freaking loud... watching any video or movie is greatly enhanced with these speakers.... even in a crowded room or with a lot of other things going on around you it's freaking loud...

EDIT: Wireless charging works fine with my TYLT VU wireless charger (Even with a TPU case on it).. with the N5 the green light on the charger stays green until you take the phone off.. I woke up in the middle of the night and the light was off.. I checked the phone and instead of status "Charging" it was just "Charged" I thought maybe it wasn't lined up right and stopped charging and when I got out of bed this morning it was at 99% while still on the charger and the light was off.. Picked it up and down and it never went back to "Charging" so I don't know if somehow the Nexus 5 actually stops charging wireless when it hits 100% and doesn't start back up until below 95 or 90%???? I set my N5 on there and it lit right up green.... Never had it NOT stay green with the N5 or N7 before so I am not sure if this is a new wireless charging feature in the N6....

Connectivity.... I dunno.. My Nexus 5 held a LTE signal at my work which is a really bad spot for a lot of people with a lot of phones and almost all carriers... we are in a weird spot... The N6 seems to drop back to HSPA+ or 3G often... My N5 held the LTE connection 99% of the time.. I remember there were some connectivity issues with the N5 at launch that were addressed in updates later on.. Maybe it's something similar with this one or maybe the radios are just not as good/strong. Motorola usually does pretty good in this area so hopefully it's not an issue... speed test runs show the N6 in the same places at the same time has faster down and upload speeds vs the N5

Ambient display.... I like it.. It's neat to hear my phone beep and just glance over and I know what it is and then the screen goes back dark or I just double click to read the email/text/whatever....

Button placement... Need to get use to it.. I'd probably actually like them if they were higher than right in the middle...
