Google Nexus 6 on Verizon

Wait. I'm confused. You're saying that your N6 that you bought from Motorola.com came unlocked. You went to Recovery, came back and bloat from Verizon had appeared? I can't imagine how that is possible. Did you download an update or something?

I've bought two N6's from Motorola.com, neither have any VZW bloat on them even after popping in my SIM and connecting to VZW.

Not exactly. My phone came unlocked. I have NOT rooted. When I first connected to VZW with an active SIM, Messenger appeared. Then, on clearing the cache partition, I went through the recovery screen and noted that my phone had become locked. Since then, I've gotten a replacement phone. If I check status on the recovery screen it also shows locked. Though like you, I have no bloat this time.

Question for you: Can you check your recovery screen to see if you remain unlocked? If you are, I've got a problem. If yours has locked as well, then connecting to VZW apparently does lock the phone.....

Fact is, a VZW release is moot. You can buy it anywhere else at retail and use it, and there is no disadvantage whatsoever:
Meat added to the bone, so to speak:

As of 2:15 EST: Not sure of delivery date, but Moto has the MN Blue 32gb available for order. Instead of worrying about a VZW release/bloat, go and get one......

Sorry my friend, connecting to VZW does not lock our phones. Wish I could get a screen grab for you. I will try to take a photo with my wife's phone tonight and post for you.

First of all the verizon release Is anything but moot. Second of all I don't see what's the problem with a contract if I'm not planning on switching providers. Contracts are like a taboo In this forum although the majority use contracts.

My point is that you do not need to be unlocked or rooted to delete any application besides those that are in the OS or root directory ( again no expert ). You should be able to delete the apps now, not just disable them. I could disable VZW apps on my Moto X , but, you still lost the storage space. I wish I could find the article again , but, in Lollipop there is a place for carriers to load their bloatware outside of the root directory. When you "root" your device I think that you are basically just gaining access to the root directory. If these apps are installed outside of root, just like any app you purchase and or side load, you can delete. It is my understanding that bloatware is placed on devices when the carriers build their ROM for the phone they will distribute, in Lollipop bloatware can be placed in an accessible directory. The article specifically said that carriers could still choose to place apps on the root directory forcing you to root the device to uninstall, but, since the GPS and Motorola an carrier unlocked neutral, I do not think that any carrier could place their bloatware on our devices in the root directory. So If VZW ends up supporting this phone they can send out an update with VZ navigator ( still scratching my head as to why they would bother with this app on Andriod phones ) , my verizon ( only useful bloatware app in my opinion ) and VOLTE, you should be able to delete all of them if you chose ( of course we probably won't want to delete VOLTE ) , and choice is the point here. Again I wrote because this was my understanding of the article and wanted to know if anyone had read this article or heard of this enhancement in Lollipop. If my interpretation was right it is a great feature , I hate carrier bloat, it s my damn phone I paid for it why do they [ the carriers] get to choose what apps are installed and eating storage.

When I first started my N6 with my active sim from my Moto X nothing changed, but, when I looked in the app drawer I had VZ apps. I freaked at first and then realized that I had used the migrate app via NFC from my Moto X which had the bloatware installed. Migrate moved the VZ apps from my Moto X to my Nexus 6 , I just went ahead and deleted them. It all happened so fast that I thought that VZ had pushed them out to my phone when I installed the SIM.

I have no agenda regarding contracts being good or bad.

My goal is to describe a way to get the phone independent of (rendering moot) VZW release, and at a $$ savings once it all comes out in the wash.

If you are on contract, the price will be the same at VZW as elsewhere.

If you are off contract (and therefore eligible for the upgrade discount), staying that way allows you to qualify for the $25 monthly discount. At the end of 2 years, this lowers the cost of ownership. You also avoid any concern over when/if the phone is released by VZW.

Finally, concerns over up-front cost is rendered moot through use of interest free financing via Moto credit.

I hope this helps......

That's exactly the answer, then. I also used NFC initially, but did not with my current build.

Now, if I can figure out how I locked up.......

Correct me if I'm wrong but how would financing be cheaper. Like on contract you just pay the 250 once and the verizon bill stays the same. If I did financing now I am paying every month for financing in addition to verizon service. Anything wrong with contract if I don't plan on switching? Oh and there is solid proof that it's coming to verizon it's just when that is the question

Nope. If you pay the subsidized contract price for a phone, you also pay $40 per month access with no discount. So, you've now paid the subsidy price (let's say 200) plus the monthly fee. If you go edge, you don't have the upfront subsidy cost and still just pay $40 access. That's 200 cheaper than contract. If you pay retail and don't use a contract or edge, you pay $15 per month access if on 10GB or higher plan, so still just paying retail. Paying retail and edge works out exactly the same. Don't ever pay subsidized contract price - you're now paying far more for the phone.

What you are missing is that your VZW bill goes down when you are off contract......

On contract, service is $40 per month, or $960 after 2 years. $250 for the phone (let's presume for 64gb), and you are out $1210.

Off contract, service is $15 per month, or $360 after 2 years. The 64gb phone is $700, and your total out of pocket works out to $1060.

The only caveat is that the service discount of $25/month applies only to plans @ 10gb or above. The discount is $15/month for smaller data plans, which changes the math somewhat (service becomes $600, add the 64 gb phone, and cost becomes $1350

You are correct that paying the subsidized phone price is more expensive than paying retail because of the cheaper service. You are incorrect re: Edge on contract. It also entitles you to the discounted monthly access.

Edge and retail off contract costs are identical. I worked out the math in my earlier post to show how much can be saved over going the subsidized contract cost.

Yeah, I think I meant to quote the guy that quoted you. I agree with you. I don't know why anyone would pay a contract price for a phone, then pay full retail spread out over the 2 year contract. Edge is a win no matter how you look at it. I've been off contract now for 4 months and I'm dying to get something new. Really want to try the 6!

I bought MotoCare with my Nexus. MUCH better deal than Asurion. One time fee of $130 over 24 months$6.50/month vs Asurion $8 per month. That is a $36 savings right off the bat. Then if something does happen that you will need to replace your phone, it is $36 each time for up to 3 occurrences. Asurion allows 2 occurrences and $100 per occurrence.

You should consider getting it from Moto right now. If you still want to spread your payments out, you can do 18 months with them vs the 24 months Edge entails. You would stay off contract, which is a neutral /win proposition. If you stay w/VZW for the two years, no impact; but if you unexpectedly get moved somewhere that a competitor offers superior coverage your wireless life would be much easier.

And as Cincy points out, insurance with Moto is reasonable. I never buy it via VZW their costs are out of line with the perceived value.

I think Asurion raised their rates recently and now charges around $150 per deductible. You are right that Motocare is a better deal when it comes to covering damage, but Asurion is more, in part, because it covers loss and/or theft.

This may have already been clarrifed, but I just wanted to agee with Cincybear. I had a TMO Nexus 6 and was using TMO exclusively for 2 months.

I was rooted and unlocked and running stock android 5.01.

I did a factory data reset and removed the TMO sim, inserted Verizon, booted up and the phone remained unlocked with mo bloatware.

Mobile Hotspot and NFL Mobile worked great out of the box.

Why contract for me?
I get reimbursed 100% of Cell and data usage. Therefore whatever I pay for the phone or any line item I get on my bill that shows paying for a phone, I do not get reimbursed. That makes a contract better for me.
Now most big companies have a nationwide plan and get phones directly from the provider. The problem we have had is having people wait 5 to 7 days before getting a phone. So, we let everyone handle their own plan and expect them to be back in a phone within 24 hours. So edge or buying directly isn't for everyone.

I wish there was a alternative with samsung. I just edged up to note 4 and Verizon told me the insurance rate is now 11/month instead of 8.
