re: Google Nexus 6 Preorder Info & Reviews

I agree with you in a huge way that there is one way that I think would have made customers happier and Google's process look better. On October 15th say, "On November 12th the Nexus is coming. Then don't say a word about anything to anyone until November 12th. Don't run a pre-order, put it on shelves and in the Play Store and everywhere and everywhere within 2 hours after you announce it. That or don't even do the October teaser. Just keep everything silent until you're ready to rock with everything. That'd have worked too.

Agreed. All they had to do is -

1. on Oct 15 make the blog posts with details of Nexus 6 and L
2. announce that the phone is out Nov 12
3. announce TMobile will have it on Nov 12 and dates for other carriers is not known

With a Nov 12 date, no one would expect reviews now, and everyone would be happy. In addition Google could've contacted the other 3 carriers for a firm date, pushed them, and let us know if possible.

The 'live for 1min' pre-order on Oct 29 helped no one and created expectations they were never ready to fulfill.

But anyway, its done and over with, now we wait another week for actual reviews, and I really hope other carriers will have it in Nov too.

Here's my prediction for Nexus 6 reviews

I know we are all waiting for embargo to lift on Nov 12 for real reviews, but honestly, there's very little not known, and based on what we know, its not hard to estimate the rest. So here's how I think the reviews will go -

software: the standout highlight, without a doubt. L is a huge release
performance: snappy, fast and fluid. No lag anywhere
size: big, but feels smaller in hand due to design of back, and easy to get used to
speakers: better than most, not as good as HTC Boomsound

Now for the big 3 -

screen: not as good as Note 4, but very nice. This is no surprise, as Samsung only licenses panels a gen behind their latest to other oem's, and save the best for their flagships, of course.

battery: 6hrs+ SoT, will last 1.5 days average use, not as much as Droid Turbo. Once again we can confidently predict this from specs, as Volta/ART won't make that big of a difference.

camera: great camera but a step behind iPhone 6+ and Note 4. We know the sensor (IMX214, 1/3") and you can't really overcome hw limitations no matter how good the software is. Shutter lag and focus speed will also be a touch behind the class leaders.

summary: huge upgrade over N5, best Android phone, but the phone won't be best in any individual category except software and speed.

I'll be really surprised if the reviews are substantially different than this :)

re: Google Nexus 6 Preorder Info & Reviews

The suspense is really killing me with waiting for any new information not just for Verizon but for any other carrier other than T mobile... It seems strange that att and sprint are also quite about when they will be getting it. All of this time that we dont hear anything makes me over think what really could be happening. I guess we have to look at it in a manner of perspective, say Tmobile is right with the nov 12th date, and that date happens to be the date for other carriers to, typically when a new phone comes out or is nearing the launch phase, you dont hear any information about the device until about a week before it arrives in stores.. Maybe this will be the case for the Nexus. Im dying to get mine as are u all. I hope for my sake that VZ gets it before years end...

Re: Here's my prediction for Nexus 6 reviews

I agree with you but I really hope the AMOLED panel is at least marginally better than the one on the 2014 Moto X. Coming from an LG G2, I can very easily see the graininess on a white background. After testing a Note 4 in store, it was evident that there's a big difference in AMOLED panel quality between that and my Moto X.

Re: Here's my prediction for Nexus 6 reviews

I hope your wrong.... I want a screen equal to note 4. A camera as good as iPhone plus.
And much better battery otherwise I'll wait

Re: Here's my prediction for Nexus 6 reviews

If this monster gets 6+ hours of actual screen time that would be amazing.... but at the same time even with keeping my Nexus 5 on the charger almost all day here at work I rarely go over 3 - 4 hour of SOT ..... At home I cast video to my TV instead of watching on my phone so my SOT is limited to start with.. That being said I just hope it last all day.... if I can get 3 - 4 hours of screen time and go from say 7 am - 11 pm with still 20 or 30% remaining on battery without having to top charge during the day that will be awesome......

I played around with a Note 4 over the weekend while at the T-Mobile store.. beautiful screen but with everything else it will be subjective on which screen is better.. Note 4 or Nexus 6.... Everything is going to be subjective to the user... I promise you'll have plenty of die hard Nexus fans saying the Nexus screen is better and the Note fans will say the same with their device... It's already been said that Quad HD is overkill to start with (and rumors the Galaxy S6 will have a 4k screen next year)

Don't really understand the review embargo Google has imposed........ Hopefully on 11/12 when the reviews start to roll out I am checking out with the device in my hand...... I'll do my own hands on review......

Still kind of weird T-Mobile is the only carrier to confirm a date.... I tried to get something out of Best Buy mobile and they didn't respond back.. Even asked the guys at the Best Buy mobile store and they said they will have it they've just never been told WHEN they will carry it... but they said they would be selling it on contract with Sprint.... He said something about the off contract price being $749 when I asked.... if true OUCH!!!! Which would lead me to believe they only want to sign you up with a contract not sell you one outright unless your just desperate for one...

Best buy will also price match so ignore that price IF they get it in a decent amount of time.

Yeah I do a lot of business with Best Buy, I've used the price match thing often on lots of stuff just for the reward zone points....

Right now I am just trying to see what options might be out there.... It's just 9 days to November 12 and T-Mobile is the only real hard source for that date...... If pricing and release date was the same (T-Mobile and Best Buy) I'd get it from Best Buy just for the points....

Re: screen, just curious if you have a source for that, or if it's a hunch / educated guess? It wouldn't surprise me to be the case, and I do expect the Note 4's display will be a little stronger, but I'd love to see their sourcing practice confirmed.

Re: battery, I agree that N6 won't outlast the Droid Turbo, but I doubt either will grant 1.5 days average use based on early reviews of the Turbo. As to Volta, that remains to be seen. There are no publicized reviews of the release version of Lollipop yet, and some early reviews of the developer version indicated pretty substantial gains.

Re: camera, there's already been a lot of criticism of the low-light performance of the Note 4, and less so of the Nexus 6. A car with a V8 engine can be outrun one with a V6 if properly managed, and likewise a better sensor does not guarantee better performance. The Nexus 6 with Lollipop's new camera API could allow for its camera to fairly easily overcome a number of devices that 'should' surpass it, either directly by way of an improved camera app or by 3rd party apps.

Both great phones. Interesting to see how the reviews pan out.

When will the play store allow more orders for the N6?

So how long does it take Google to get more stock to sell? Or will that page stay the same until they start shipping?

Re: When will the play store allow more orders for the N6?

Depends on region. They have then based on region your in like east coast , city state or whatever

Re: When will the play store allow more orders for the N6?

Hard to say. I would imagine it'll probably still be "sold out" until at least 11/12, when it supposedly launches from T-Mobile. It's possible it might go back up for order on the Play Store then. If not then, then probably once the first batch ships out and the phone actually properly "launches", it should be a bit more widely available. Hopefully it'll be back up for order on the Play Store by the end of the month.

I concur that it's very unlikely they'd put out more before the 12th. At least at that point, if they instantly sell out again, buyers would have alternative sources from which to get it.

Re: Here's my prediction for Nexus 6 reviews

I have never seen a reviewer who I agree with when it come to battery life, but this is because each person use their phone differently. As a rule of thumb, you add about 30minutes screen on time to what the reviewer say. They record the battery life as they test the phone, so they are constantly using the phone and take more photos, which drain the battery faster than what the average person does.

My prediction is reviewers will give it about 3-3.5hrs screen on time. As for my personal use, I'll probably get 5hrs+ SOT with it. I don't believe this phone can do 6hrs SOT for real world usage, nor will it get more than 24hrs battery life (although it is possible if you use the phone very lightly).

re: Google Nexus 6 Preorder Info & Reviews

Since Google has banned full reviews until Nov 12 and coincidentally T-Mobile says they're getting it Nov 12 it stands to reason (to me) that is the date everyone will get it.

Re: Here's my prediction for Nexus 6 reviews

On that big of a battery??? Ouch if it can't then I'll just wait for snapdragon 810....

re: Google Nexus 6 Preorder Info & Reviews

I just want the 12th to get here.

Re: Here's my prediction for Nexus 6 reviews

The technology is always going to improve and get better.... Once the 810 processor is in mass production they will be working on the 815 (or whatever the latest and greatest is going to be called) and you'll read how much better that one is... If you are going to wait for the 810 you might as well wait for whatever comes after that... 64 bit processing isn't going to be a big deal next year... More than likely it will be more of a big deal in 2016 and beyond.... and they will have tweaked these things even more and we are probably looking at Android 5.5 or 6.0.....

Be like waiting for the latest Ferrari to come out.... You 2014 model has 650 horsepower does 0 - 60 in 3.7 seconds and gets 10 miles per gallon.... but the new model has 720 HP does 0 - 60 in 3.3 seconds and gets 14 miles per gallon... All the while you can't really go over 70 on the highway.....

at the same time it sure would have been nice had they just added a little more bulk to this monster and went with the same 3,900 battery they threw in the Droid Turbo..... You know if you are going to go crazy why not go all the way????
