Google Nexus 6P USB-C Charging

Re: USB-C Charging

For those interested, I purchased the following pack of A to C cables from Amazon http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B013RMG5WY and tried them out last night for the first time. When plugged into my old 2A HP chargers (for the tablet from way back when) I got the "charging rapidly" text on the home screen. Though it said it would take 1.75 hours to charge from the 25% I was at, so a fair bit slower than the set that comes with the phone.

However, for the price I'm happy. I wanted to use these hooked to older chargers for my overnight charging so having to wait 2 hours for a full charge is very acceptable.

Re: USB-C Charging

Yea but its only 2.4A max and 480mbps.

You guys gotta ask the real questions when buying this stuff.

The wall charge MUST be 5V/3A or 15W per connector. The cable must support 3A and 10gbps.

Just because its type c to type c doesn't mean it will work. The cable you linked, won't rapid charge in the 90 mins that people are getting with the OEM charger, because the max amp is 2.4. Essentially it is a USB 2.0 cable with Type C connectors...not a USB 3.1 cable.

Re: USB-C Charging

Ah good catch it was late when I looked at it so I didnt go over it, I will message the company and see if they have any plans to release one with those capabilities

Re: USB-C Charging

None of the stuff on amazon is usb 3.1. I've looked thoroughly.

I've checked Alibaba to see if any of the manufacturers overseas are offering 10 foot cables with this spec. None. I guarantee you we won't be seeing 10 foot usb 3.1 type c to type c cables for some time. Simply because the 6P and 5X were not the first, and those cables have yet to come to market. There is going to be a lag before these cables arrive.

Same for the chargers...everything I've seen maxes out at 2.4A. They might claim 3A peak output, but maintained is 2.4A. This is evident by the reports of people buying chargers, showing "Rapidly Charging" but reporting slower charge times.

If you want a good charger, by the google one. If you want a 10 foot cable, your going to need to wait.

Oh and all this crap about adapters, type A to type C, don't buy that either. It still maxes at 2.4A.

Re: USB-C Charging

I bought usb a to c cables from oneplus, to use with the incipio car chargers that I already have. It won't give me fast Charging, but it will tide me over until someone comes out with an official 6p/5x fast Charging car charger.

I really don't think the cable is limited to 2.4A. Instead, since it is USB-A on one end, instead, I believe it is that the USB-A quick chargers are all limited to 2.4A, so they are merely stating they will do the max voltage that a USB-A Quick Charger will provide. I suspect that any chargers made with a 3.0A connector will have a USB-C type connector (such as the Google charger), so even if this cable is limited to 2.4A (which I don't believe it is) it is likely not to matter.

As for being 480 Mbps, that doesn't matter for the 5X or 6P, as both phones only support the USB 2.0 standard.

USB-A isn't the reason the cable is limited to 2.4A. Google's A to C cable can handle 5V/3A (https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...tion/accessories_wall?hl=en-US&token=RrKoeaSY). It's probably the wiring within the cable that limits the speed to 2.4A.

See the following reveiw/link and note from the company that identifies all their cables as 3Amp supported. That said, if the charger is rated less than 3 Amp (e.g. 2.4) it is only going to push power based on its specs regardless of what the cable can handle. Conversely if you have a power source/charger pushing more power (i.e. 3Amp) than the cable can handle (e.g. 2.4Amp) I would be concerned that the overload could be dangerous. Just like you don't try to push 30Amp of power through a 14 gauge wire (rated for 15Amps max).

I wasn't saying the cable was limited to 2.4A due to USB-A. To me, it appears the 2.4A claim is to indicate that it will work with those Quick Charge chargers. This is supported by their wording, "Support the Maximum 2.4A fast charging" -- the limit for most USB-A Quick Chargers. I'm fairly sure they can handle a quick charge at 3A, particularly since the maximum power draw of both new Nexuses (Nexii?) I'm seeing (from XDA and other places) is about 2.6A.

Re: USB-C Charging

One more thing I just noticed, the cable claims to have been "specially designed" for a few devices, including the new Macbook. The Macbooks USB-C port is capable of charging the device at 5V and over 5A, and there are reviews saying that people have used it to successfully charge their Macbook (though they do not state the specs of the charger they used). But, to be compatible and "designed for" the Macbook, the cable would need to support at least 5A at 5V.

I'll agree, I'd be happier if we got confirmation from iOrange-E

Re: USB-C Charging

Lets not forget, a true USB 3.1 cable allows two way transfer.

Really the way I see it is that the most cost effective solution is to use what Google gave you, and buy an adapter for your current cables.

Then when the REAL stuff comes out, gets commoditized and prices drop, then buy. Until then, your buying a cable that essentially usb 2.0 without any of the 3.0/3.1 benefits. Just that you have a type c connector on both ends.

Re: USB-C Charging

Is anyone familiar with any USB-C hub type devices? Say something like this: http://www.amazon.com/MacBook-Charg...ag=hawk-future-20&ascsubtag=UUacUvbUpU4779959 There are different varieties there with varying prices and number/types of ports.

I know it's meant for a macbook to expand your ports, but I'm thinking just in terms of charging, do you think plugging this into a google usb-c power brick would allow fast charging through the various ports here (specifically the "usb c charging port").

Edit: Reading the reviews, this specific model does not charge anything it seems. But anything similar would still be nice to have.

Re: USB-C Charging

I ordered a OPT C to A cable for syncing, but what's a good, cheap C to C cable for charging?

Re: USB-C Charging

I went with (Link Redacted because "post count") because it can handle 5V/3A. It would be nice if it was USB 3.0 or 3.1, but I've got zero devices with that configuration.

I wish they carried the 6.6 ft in black. Not to be a cable racist, but I hate white cables. But this is probably what I'll end up with.

I'm not sure if that's true. What about the following cable...
