Google Pixel 3 / 3 XL 2018

The benefit to the consumer is covered by the opportunity cost portion of it - money not wasted on unnecessary upgrades - that can be better invested in putting more time, aka money, into improving other features that provide better bang for the bunk to the user.

Going with 4gb ram doesn't mean that Google have more time including more features into the phone. Ram is a hardware part that Google would have ordered for the phones. Again you haven't explained what the benefit to the end user is with Google going with 4gb ram is. And if 6gb ram is unnecessary, then why not go with 2gb ram?

Ultimately, it's a cost saving measure for Google as other companies are able to provide more ram and better hardware specs for the same or cheaper pricing.

When my phone starts running slower due to this,

But that's an issue I'm getting - I am running into frequent app reloads due to 4gb ram and 6gb would reduce the number of them. The user experience would be improved by going to 6gb ram. It's affecting performance.

Not just me saying it - MKBHD a popular YouTuber and has also run into this issue. He even got a second Pixel 2 XL and it is also experiencing the same issues, as well as an Android Police editor.

That's my issue with it. Ultimately it's Google's phone they make the calls on what they want don't want, but I don't have to like or agree with it and seeing people do backflips to justify it is pretty amusing.

RAM isn't the only thing in the phone. It's probably not even one of the most important things in the phone.

RAM costs money. Development time for features costs money. R&D costs money. All of these things compete against each other for resources. Any money not spent on RAM, which adds little to no value, can be spent on other things that provide a bigger return on investment. Every time an OEM makes a choice to spend money on a bigger value add than on a lesser one, that's a win for us.

Geez Google's philosophy is less for more. Google could easily bump the battery up to 4000 mah and offer 2 additional gigs of ram. Google has balls if they stand their with a serious face selling another "flagship" device with a substandard display.

So why only Google? Why not OnePlus, HTC, Samsung, etc.? Very curious you call out Google for something yet let others slide... very curious :P.

Here's my RAM usage in the last 24 hours .. I'm yet to see anyone produce any evidence of needing more RAM.
I am a heavy user of my phone. Here is my daily average. Looks pretty much like yours.

More RAM is only necessary if you are maxing out your RAM usage. I never have app reloads due to RAM issues. I seem to have plenty to do most things. I multitask frequently as well.

Yes more would be nice, but I would prefer a refined experience over extras for the sake of it.

By the way, apps needing to refresh from multitasking is running slower. If I multitask to an app and it's as I left it and I can begin taking in content or taking action on the screen, that's faster than if I multitask to an app and have to see a white page and have to wait for it to load again.

No matter how you want to spin it -- whether you feel that wait is so minuscule as to say it's irrelevant or whether you yourself don't happen to use enough apps to see this affect -- it is slower.

Again, MKBHD said it himself in that video I linked to. When using the OnePlus 6 and Pixel 2 XL, the RAM made a noticeable difference.

Look, 4GB of RAM isn't a "problem." I just think Google can do better. Especially given the price point, especially given the competition, especially given this is a late-2018 flagship going into the new year's competition.

I agree 4 gb isn't such a problem but the competition and price point is. I could see Google staying with 4gb next year too. The biggest advantage for pixel phones are the fast updates but no one outside this forum really cares about that. Even OnePlus patches bi monthly.

I think OnePlus nailed Android. A stock experience with several additional features. I don't think the camera will get to a quite pixel level but not far off.

I currently have a OnePlus 6, pixel 2xl and a Huawei P20 pro. Each phone has there advantages.

Between the P2XL and the 1+6, all I want to know is which has the better camera??? I'm interested in trying out the 1+6 but don't want to lose out on the stellar camera experience of the Pixel.

I feel like if you have a pixel 2 there is no reason to upgrade. Wireless charging is nice but I haven't had a phone in tests that used it.

I wonder how the screen will be. Will it improve?

It won't be an issue for me (the RAM thing). Would I like more? Sure because it wouldn't hurt it to have more but it also won't be a deal breaker that makes me stray away from getting the 3 XL. I will most likely sell my 2 XL (or maybe donate it to a friend who needs a phone if they do at the time of the 3 XL release). I will get the 3 XL with the Watch as well.

There's another thing rumored to announce at the same time as well. Might be an expensive October for some of us.

Yeah it will be lol. I will get the 3 XL, the LTE watch, and then probably the wireless charging stand for my computer desk at home.

Pixel 3XL is a go, don't care about the notch and hopefully if an unlocked pixel watch comes along with it that I can use on T-Mobile, I'm gravy.

Yeah it does.

I don't know who's in charge of phone hardware design on the Pixel team, but they need to get someone else. While I like the phones, it's definitely not because of the hardware, and year after year they're coming up with (imo) ugly designs that look like behind the competition.

Pretty much every other phone with a notch looks to have a smaller notch and thinner bottom bezel.

Oh well, here's hoping it's got a stellar camera and software experience.

What is so ugly about these phones? Aren't most phones in a case anyway.

Pixel 3 models will only have gestures. No option to go back to the traditional button layout.

The gestures are terrible. Google is making a stupid and avoidable mistake. One of many, in the Pixel 3.

The traditional button layout is much better IMO. The iPhone X gestures are way better!
