If you have a good data connection, Google Music will use twice as much bandwidth as Spotify, unless you've set Spotify to the Extreme setting.

Over the course of a song, shouldn't the total consumption be equal? Like the difference between driving 59 miles at 31 mph versus the same distance at 73 mph is the same distance using different amounts of time?

I received an update last night, but it didn't appear to fix anything. Not sure what the point of it was.

And greenify didn't fix anything either, since most of the drain comes from the streaming itself. I thought maybe if the app was turned off while not in use could help, but I was wrong.

The bitrate of a song is different from the data transfer rate between the Google Play Music service and your phone. A 320kbps song has more data in it (it's a larger file) than a 96kbps song. Jerry is saying that if Google detects a fast internet connection then it will automatically send larger files, i.e. you'll use way more data on your data plan.
 
I'm really enjoying the new Google Play Music service thing. Really really awesome....but holy crap does it use a ton of data! I thought other streaming music apps were bad but this just burns through data.

Anyone else notice this?

I have unlimited data so I honestly never looked at my usage. I do know I average 15 gigs per month.

Good point, sorry I wasn't thinking about it in terms of the quality difference. Of course higher quality = more data.
 
I notice in the settings there options to cache over wifi...perhaps that would help? I haven't actually had a chance to try out the new app yet....
 
I have used mine for about 5 hours so far, and am loving it. I am only showing a total of 734MB of use though. Just a thought, but do you all have the Stream at Highest Quality only checked? I have it unchecked (was driving out in the country and was having some pauses in the music. :P). I also have unlimited data, so in general I will be leaving the high quality setting on, as I enjoy my music sounding its best, but I hope for the sake of the limited data users that they sort it out, or that Google will add more quality options.

734MB is a lot of data. For data cap users, like myself, download the album over WiFi then listen to it on the go until they figure this out and change it.

I in no way was saying its not, but compared to you playing only 20 songs and hitting over 1GB, that is a FAR lower usage. Also, most of my personal Pandora usage is around a couple hundred MB an hour as well. The simple fact is, if you have limited data, you wont be able to stream a whole lot over mobile data, and the Google Play Music caching over wi-fi seems like a pretty good deal compared to Pandora or most (not all, but most) other streaming music providers, esp when you factor in the ability to pick and choose exactly what songs play. That said, I am sure that there is a lot of optimization that can be done to at least reduce the amount of data used, a key option being to add more quality options.


Edit: The above is not in any way meant to sound rude or to reduce the struggle that people with Limited data face in the desire to use these Computers-that-happen-to-make-calls as they were made to be used.
 
Speaking of issues with Google Music, all I want to know is why album art still looks like crap! Local music, with a 1000x1000 resoltion album art tagged in the songs...and the album art looks like a blown up crappy 200x200 res image when it's "pan/scan/kenburns" in the now playing window. I use a galaxy tab 2 7.0 running CM 10.1 in my car, and it's embarrassing how crappy it looks...anyone else noticed this problem?
 
I do like the service thus far, but I'm wondering if I should hold off on subscribing until it has more time in the oven.

But then I'm back to deciding between Spotify and Rdio. Spotify has more support I think

But that should not matter. Your device can be full. But the music stored on Google Play, should have no bearing on device storage.
I thought that was the purpose of cloud storage. Any help would be appreciated.

At the very least, you need some space to buffer the stream. keep in mind also that Google Music stores is cache to internal storage... unless something has changed, you can't say it to store to SD card.

What is strange. I go to the play store and uninstall the updates. That takes it back to the factory version.
The app works without a hitch. If I reverse the process, and update the app. The problem comes back.
That tells me device storage has nothing to do with it. Google Play is cloud storage, like Picasa, where I store all my photos.
Not trying to disagreeing with you, but this problem just started.
And I did not add any new apps. If the method I explained to you is occurring.
Maybe there is a bug in the app. I Googled this issue, and found others having the same problem.
