On my HTC M8 today, I received a popup that said:

Google recommends uninstalling this app: Edmunds. It may be used to spy on you.

My choices were to Uninstall or Keep the app anyway.

I have several Android phones and this is the first time I've ever seen a message like this. This phone doesn't get used much; it's mainly a test device for me. Just wondering if anyone else has seen the message.

The message looks like a virus itself. The Edmunds site ( Introducing the Edmunds.com Android App ) looks pretty legitimate.

It's a legit app, and I thought the same thing about the popup being a virus. The device only has a few Play Store apps installed, and they are all "real" (AutoTrader, KBB).

This is basically my test device right now, so nothing else is running on it. There was a checkbox to not show the dialog again, and I left it unchecked. If it pops up again I will post a screen shot.

I am suspect of that message as well. Mostly because Google would want to avoid using the term "spy". In developer options they use the term "harmful behavior".

I actually found an article that it's built in by Google. I'm not sure why it picked that app as it's been installed for a while and it's reputable. The popup hasn't came back again. It's a clean phone with only those couple of apps on it. I'm not one to download rouge or strange apps; especially on a development phone. I will look for the article on Google's blog and post the link.
