Would you still buy a Moto X post Motorola/Lenovo Deal?

Re: Lenovo reportedly set to buy Motorola from Google for up to $3 billion

I think they will keep the US brand in the US and Canada for sure. Not sure about Latin American or Europe, but I am sure they will keep the Lenovo brand in Asia.

Lenovo CEO said Motorola branding in the Americas and Lenovo branding in Asia. Makes sense.

Not sure about Europe.

Do you buy the Ford built in Mexico or the Nissan built in Tennessee?

Hey **** you big car companies like ford that have assembling factories on another country doesn't make them worst. I'm sure they have the same quality standards.

Re: The Sale is Official.... Now What?

They haven't come into the U.S. because are market is very volatile. Motorola does not do well as a business nor HTC. Its Samsung, Apple, and LG. Motorola may be internet famous but at the end of the day people buy Samsung and Apple. I almost went Samsung if it wasn't for Motorola Migrate making my transition to a phone without an SD card easier. Also, you have to look at Lenovo as a whole, they are a very successful company they do well in computers, phones and tablets. Now they have a American company with some brand recognition. All they can do now is expand.

In terms of smart phones in the US - LG, really?

Hey. There's nothing wrong with the quality of cars built in different countries.

However, I believe that cheap labor in other countries, like Mexico, is often blamed for the loss of American jobs.

iDK if that's true, because that's what I heard about NAFTA.

They ditched the IBM name earlier than required.
yeah, but if they were required to do it eventually, why not get it over with?

Re: Lenovo reportedly set to buy Motorola from Google for up to $3 billion

These are my thoughts on this:

1) At first I was pissed. I finally had my mostly stock phone on Verizon (long awaited after the Galaxy Nexus disaster) and was pretty sure I had my future OEM manufacturer for my phone. Now, all of this was in question. Additionally, I enjoyed supporting an American company, which seems to be pretty difficult these days.

2) After a small amount of dust has settled, I'm not nearly as angry and more optimistic than before. This is because a) we don't know what Lenovo is going to do with Moto for sure - there's no way of knowing anything at this point. And if they're serious about joining in and becoming a huge player in Android, I'm sure they are aware that they probably don't want to dismantle what Moto has recently built/achieved; b) I'm growing less sure of the amount of influence that Google really had on Moto. I think there was some, but I'm pretty sure it was less than what we all think. And I'm more hopeful that it was Moto discovering that a crappy skin makes for a crappy product - they have been slightly more stock than other OEMs for a little while; and c) with Google acquiring all of these patents, keeping some of the Moto divisions (most important for me is the division that maintains Project Ara), forcing Samsung to tone down the TW and cross licensing with them, only bodes well for the future of Android.

At this point anything is just conjecture and nothing set in stone. We could be up in a tizzy about nothing. For all we know, Lenovo could be the company to take it to the next level and become right up there with Samsung by number of sales. We all might be clamoring for the next Motonovo phone in 2 or 3 years from now because it may be the absolute best thing on the market. Who knows?

If Lenovo does ruin Moto, however, as long as phones get more stock-like and maybe a Nexus/GPE phone works on Verizon, I know I'll be fine. I just want a stock phone that works well.

...that's what they did.

Re: Lenovo Support

People forget that the parts for the Moto X are still manufactured overseas. It is only the final assembly that occurs in the U.S.

I just think unlike the Sammys of the world, Motorola has a good thing with the X and a break from the norm right now in the industry as far as specs vs optimization. Apple is good with marketing and optimization. Samsung with marketing and gimmicks imo. It would be smart to keep the Motorola plan of lower specs and user experience by levono and not the smartphone arms race. Ha

Re: The Sale is Official.... Now What?

It is worrisome. Makes me nervous about Google's commitment to the Nexus line as well.

no, many of us have not forgotten, that is why we make the distinction that the phone is assembled in the US. Still, it is the only 1 that is.

Re: Lenovo Support

Who cares... It is now a fully owned Chinese company. If you care about future jobs you need to vote your dollars elsewhere.

I've asked this in another thread but it seems relevant here too.

I doubt Lenovo would cut all of the Motorola has in the US. They just moved into new space in Chicago. They still have a presence in the SF bay area. I know they still have a building here in San Diego. The plant that assembles the US Moto Xs is owned by Flextronics.

Like it or not, the economy is global.

Does Lenovo have the bankroll for Motorola to lose a billion dollars every year for the next few years? Google backing Motorola made me comfy about moto losing to start as they developed the X line into the phone it was destined to be. I'm not getting that feeling with this deal.

I hear you. That was my thought, too. Motorola will have to turn a profit quickly for Lenovo to give them any say in the direction of the company/phones.

Goodbye sale promotions!

I expect Lenovo do tighten up a bit. But let's take a look at Google's Q4 2013 numbers (where Motorola probably sold more devices vs the other quarters in 2013 where they didn't have new product).

Re: Lenovo reportedly set to buy Motorola from Google for up to $3 billion

Oh well, as long as my Moto G still works and does what it's supposed to do I don't care too much.
The boot screen animation still says "a Google company" at the moment...I wonder if that will change in the same way as it did with the Christmas boot screen animation ? (I've always suspected that feature would be used to spam us with advertising in the same way Amazon does with their tablets)
Hopefully we won't be bombarded with Lenovo updates from the Play Store that fill our phones with bloatware, especially since many bought the Moto G or X because it was so free from bloatware.
Anyway...the Moto G and X being baby Nexus phones was good while it lasted.

At a loss likely do to the sales and then the compensatory codes they gave out to others who didn't get a sale price but were still in the return period.
