Google to sell Motorola Mobility to Lenovo for $2.91 billion

Would you still buy a Moto X post Motorola/Lenovo Deal?

It is too early to make an educated decision. Of course, most people don't vote according to facts or education, so please continue.

Re: Lenovo reportedly set to buy Motorola from Google for up to $3 billion

MS was successful with PC's and that still has yet to translate to WP.
OK but MS developed their own operating system for their phones. Lenovo will only be making the hardware and additional software features to enhance the OS, not the OS itself and hopefully, no annoying OEM skin.

I don't mind good OEM skins. If they do as good a job with it as Motorola and Sony do with their forks of Android I'd be ok with it

Haven't tried Sony phones but I never liked Motoblur.

Re: The Sale is Official.... Now What?

Now that I think about it I don't think Levono will break up the band so to speak. Their cell phones have not exactly taken off so acquiring Motorola just to make it a Levono doesn't make much sense to me. Until we learn more I'd say a Moto x 2 has a 50/50 chance verses not. I think this phone has been a learning experience for many with its optimization and if Levono plays their cards right , they can be a real player in the market imo with an affordable price point. The other thing I'm not sure of is quick updates. Everyone assumed this was due to Google owning Moto but for all we know it was Moto pushing for it and making it happen with the near stock system. Guess I'm saying that Google may not have had as big of a hand in all that is Moto X and G after all and if Levono doesn't break it up, it may stay the coarse and we will get more great phones under Motorola. It'll be a while before we see. I'm looking forward to following the situation though.

Wait what? Lenovo is one of the biggest smartphone manufacturers in the world. I'm the U.S. they have very little presence but to the world over they are one of the biggest smartphone and tablet manufacturers on the planet. Check IDCs latest numbers. With hat being said I think Lenovo will use Motorola to get into the U.S. market the one market it hasn't cracked yet.

Re: Lenovo Support

The point is all the money is now staying overseas...

Motorola is still an American company right now and what phone would you get if they did go Chinese? Go back to a Palm Pre? Or would you go Nokia because they are owned by an American company? Reality check is that things wouldn't be as affordable as they are now if they weren't foreign made. The Moto X was an exception to that though.

Ok fair enough but to be honest I don't care what they've done in other countries. They haven't cracked the US market for some reason. If they want to crack that nut they need to keep Motorola in tacked and keep the existing plan imo.

Re: Lenovo Support

What does this mean for those of us who've purchased the Moto Care extended 2 year warranty? Should I try and get a prorated refund at this point or will it continue to be honored? I've only had the Moto X for about a month.

I think you have 60 days to get a full refund and then it's pro-rated thereafter. However, I would expect the extended 2 year warranty to operate the same.

They haven't come into the U.S. because are market is very volatile. Motorola does not do well as a business nor HTC. Its Samsung, Apple, and LG. Motorola may be internet famous but at the end of the day people buy Samsung and Apple. I almost went Samsung if it wasn't for Motorola Migrate making my transition to a phone without an SD card easier. Also, you have to look at Lenovo as a whole, they are a very successful company they do well in computers, phones and tablets. Now they have a American company with some brand recognition. All they can do now is expand.

Re: Lenovo Support

I'm not concerned about support but I highly doubt that Lenovo will provide software updates for the phone as far out as Google would have, and I highly doubt that the updates will be as swift as they would have otherwise. As to the future, Lenovo's phones have horrible custom UI. If they decide just to fold future Moto products into their existing design strategy for hardware and software, that's horrible news in my book.

As a strange consequence, this may well be my last phone on Verizon. Being able to buy what was pretty much a Google experience phone, for which I could count on swift Android version updates, at a reasonable off-contract price and keep my unlimited data is the only thing that got me to stay. Now it's unlikely that will be an option in a year or two. Hopefully T-Mobile stays the course with their plans and significantly boosts their LTE coverage area by that time.

Re: Say Goodbye to Moto X sales!

No "sort of" about it. Motorola will soon be a Chinese company and to say that upsets me is putting it mildly. To say I like Google even less today than I did yesterday would also be putting it mildly.

If it weren't for the fact that the alternatives suck even more: I'd be walking away from Android entirely, by now.

Yes and no on Motorola becoming Chinese. No argument that Lenovo, as the controlling company, is Chinese. However, what impact this has on Motorola remains to be seen. If Lenovo keeps Moto as an independent arm, then Moto would be no more Chinese than Activision-Blizzard was French when Vivendi owned them. Lenovo recognizes that the Motorola brand name carries a lot of weight in the US, so I suspect they will keep the American arm in place. Where this will have the greatest impact is most likely in China, where Lenovo now has a unique leg up on the other Chinese manufacturers.

But I can understand the desire to support a fully American-owned business, and I would be lying if I said this loss does not make me sad no matter what happens to Motorola.

Re: Lenovo reportedly set to buy Motorola from Google for up to $3 billion

Could anybody venture a guess as to what is going to happen to the naming and branding of future Lenovo and Motorola phones? What will they be called? Will Lenovo continue to use the name Motorola, or will it be something like what happened when IBM PC's were renamed Lenovo PC's. A year from now is Moto Maker going to be on a Lenovo website?

I'm thinking Moto will stay with it's name.

Lenovo could possible get some of it's tech from them and use it to improve their line of phones.

Just a hunch.

IBM's PC's were renamed because IBM required Lenovo to do that. There is no reason to think that will be the case with this transaction as Google doesn't want to keep the Motorola name and they were never named Google phones to begin with.

That's good point. So, Lenovo will just have two different phone brands, Lenovo phones and Motorola phones, something similar to how Ford Motor Co. might purchase a car company like Fiat but both car companies remain separate.

They ditched the IBM name earlier than required.

Do you buy the Ford built in Mexico or the Nissan built in Tennessee?

I think they will keep the US brand in the US and Canada for sure. Not sure about Europe, but I am sure they will keep the Lenovo brand in Asia.
