Google to sell Motorola Mobility to Lenovo for $2.91 billion

Would you still buy a Moto X post Motorola/Lenovo Deal?

AnandTech | Some Thoughts on Lenovo's Acquisition of Motorola Mobility from Google

If we've learned anything from watching the PC evolve however, it's that OEMs participating in a low margin business tend to prioritize profits first and user experience second. My hope for a Google-owned Motorola was a device vendor that was independent of that mess
And this is why so many of us are disappointed.

Re: Google to sell Motorola Mobility to Lenovo for around $3 billion.

I booted my Moto X and it now shows on startup,

Motorola
a Lenovo Company

It is indeed true. So sad. bye bye update.

Re: Google to sell Motorola Mobility to Lenovo for around $3 billion.

no it doesn't but you fooled me so I had to try, lol!

hahahaha. I re-booted my Moto X when I heard the news just to make sure it didn't change.
maybe one day it will.

Re: Lenovo Support

Does he keep the Moto X or return it and get a Nexus 5. My concern is how good will Lenovo be on updates and support?
I think if he chose the Moto X over the Nexus 5 to begin with, he should stick with the Moto X. It is the Moto X2 that I am worried about.

Re: Lenovo Support

Son ordered a Moto X Developer Edition this week that has already shipped. His first smartphone. Now the news today of the sale. Now he's torn. Does he keep the Moto X or return it and get a Nexus 5. My concern is how good will Lenovo be on updates and support? What other concerns?

This is like Steve Jobs selling the first iPhone to the highest bidder before it barely got off the ground. I would return it and get the Nexus 5.

Re: Google to sell Motorola Mobility to Lenovo for around $3 billion.

Hmmm I have recently jumped on the "Google wants make moto into something big" train. I should have stayed on the "they only want patents" train I was on for so long lol.

Well i had said that my next phone would definitely be a moto, now it is time to look at HTC again. That is unless Verizon ever gets a nexus or nexus like device...

yeah, it was the latter. Sad for the consumer, and although Google may not realize it, it will weaken android.

How about a Motorola Nexus! The Moto NeXus.

Re: Google to sell Motorola Mobility to Lenovo for around $3 billion.

HP had big plans for Palm, and how did that work out for them? They were going to be a major player in the mobile industry with that purchase, & IIRC weren't they the #1 PC OEM at the time? There's a lot of parallels here.

Palm took way too long to bring WebOS market, and the carriers had lost interest in them. Marketing was abysmal. Even after delays, the Palm Pre seemed rushed to market. They were operating from a weak position.

Lenovo gets a brand that already has good distribution with Verizon, and has re-established itself with the other major carriers. And it's already producing two top-notch products for their market segments.

Let's see how Lenovo does with Moto.

Their laptops are good (I own an IdeaPad Y410P and it's awesome) though I can't say the same for their phones. Sure, they look great but the processor seems off to me (an Intel Atom. Seriously?) and I'm not a really big fan of their UI.

Let's just hope Lenovo takes really good care of Moto, and not stray away from its software policies.

The Motorola Sale is Official.... Now What?

Google has confirmed that the sale of Motorola to Lenovo is true and will be finalized quickly because Lenovo wants to get into the U.S. Market with cell phones as fast as possible.

So does this mean that any hopes of seeing a Moto X2 are gone? It seems that way...

Google is holding onto all of Motorola's patents, which means that even if a Moto X2 was released by Lenovo, would they even be able to integrate the same features that were in the Moto X? Or do all of those capabilities now belong to Google?

I was getting out of my contract with Verizon in August, and was looking forward to possibly grabbing the next-gen Moto X phone. Now, it might not happen at all, which is quite disappointing.

But the main selling point of WebOS wasn't the hardware, it was the software. So all HP had to do was provide quality hardware. The opinion of most anyone knowledgeable on the matter was that it would be revolutionary on quality hardware, but HP drug their feet and that's when most lost interest.

I was simply pointing out that there were a lot of similarities between the two situations. As far as Lenovo, it seems you either love em or hate em. But all of this they're the #1 PC OEM doesn't necessarily mean that's good for Moto. Like I said before, when they bought Palm, HP was the #1 PC OEM, and look at them now. Now with them it seems you just hate em. What matters is how did Lenovo become #1, by building quality products and standing behind them, or selling decent hardware cheap and undercutting the competition? If it's the former great, if it's the latter we've got a problem.

Re: The Sale is Official.... Now What?

I wouldn't put it down just yet. I would like to see what Lenovo can come up with though. If they want to stand out, they got to think outside of the box!

I can't wait to say "OK LENOVO NOW"...

Re: The Sale is Official.... Now What?

The whole Google + Motorola situation rocked! Affordable phones that blew others out of the water! Look at how inexpensive Moto's phones are now compared to others.. But now what!?

Lenovo may be a fantastic company, but Google has the innovation and cash to do even more then just innovate.. It can change the world (lol)

Re: The Sale is Official.... Now What?

I'm a little bummed. I would stay with the X line as long as they made them. Really love the phone and made me realize how optimization works. Was looking forward to the X2. Well I guess the iPhone 6 is gonna get a look now.
