Got rid of my Evo, got an Epic.

I just went back to my Epic after side lining it to try out my new evo. Rooted and over clocked my evo. All the test came out better than the Epic but after using it for a week just not as smooth. Back to the Epic for awhile and it's smooth as butter. Miss the larger screen and the email app worked better on the Evo

I had an Evo since launch date. One of my friends and I just traded phones because he wanted an Evo and I wanted an Epic. So we did just that.

Let me just start by saying that the Epic, for me, is a much better device. I will miss HTC's Sense, and now that I don't have it, I can truly tell you that Sense makes a huge difference in how an Android phone works. It looks great, and adds functionality.

However, I have several gameloft games that I was unable to play comfortably on the Evo due to the cheap Qualcomm processor. Now, no lag at all whatsoever. Also, I love the screen. It's simply gorgeous.

The camera! Wow. HTC's Camera does not compare to the one on the Epic at all. The Epic takes much better pictures, and the video quality is unmatched by Evo. The Evo, compared to Epic, is like comparing VHS quality vs. Blu-Ray. Yeah. That big of a difference. I can't believe how much the HTC Evo camera really sucks.

I really like Samsung's skin, but I will admit that Sense is many times superior to TouchWiz.

I could go on with my list of comparisons, but I will stop and have the confidence to say this:

I think the Samsung Epic is finally a solid Android competitor to the iPhone.

Yup. I said it. The only reason I didn't have an iPhone is because it's on AT&T. I was never satisfied with the all around performance of any Android phone when compared to the iPhone until now. Samsung really did well with this. In fact, I have been doing nothing but bashing on iPhone users since I got my Epic. Everything works. I have not had a single app crash on me. The camera is just as good as the one on iPhone, if not better. The screen is awesome, not the high pixel density of iPhone, but this phone made me realize that color is what makes the difference. The screen is just as responsive as iPhone (which is a first for Android phones). the music quality is great. And the best part: my Epic is more powerful than any iPhone out there; Hummingbird really kicks everything out of the water.

My long 2 cents.

Now, I will also be buying a Galaxy Tab when it is released because of my satisfaction with Samsung. And I won't look at iPhones anymore like if I really want one. Now it's just another phone.

I totally agree with you on the Epic after I tried it for a week. The keyboard killed it for me though. I've posted this link on other threads but with Launcher Pro plus and Baked Snack's rom I don't feel so bad about returning the Epic. So for those on the fence and dont mind rooting then maybe try out this rom before you decide to switch.
YouTube - Baked Snack 1.7 on Sprint Evo non Overclocked

i feel ya on the roms and rooting and what not, but man that crap just got annoying. I actually use quite a few of the sprint apps and would always have issues when i was using custom roms and had to get gapps files and **** like that. just got to be a pain. and for the evo to be smooth you have to hack it(IMO). But the epic has 5 point multitouch out of the box, 54fps in graphic intensive games. which may not matter much now but it will, the psx4droid runs smooth as silk and i actually use the keyboard much more than i thought. So the evo wasnt for me. and the epic will get 2.2 and its not like 2.1 is dreadful to use.

Yeah, in order for Evo to be what it needs to be it needs to be rooted, which I am not into. It's too complicated. I come from a Palm Pre before my Evo (and now Epic) and Palm WebOS was a breeze to hack. Almost as if it was intentional. However, with Android, you have a lot of steps and a lot of mistakes you can make. I tried it with my Evo, and I just could not do it confidently.

What is 5-point multitouch?

by default the evo only recognized 2 spots being touched, could be hacked to either 3 or 5 depending on the screen you had. the epic does it by default. not a big deal just one of those things. i rooted the epic with the one step it was super easy. just click and done. thinking about undoing it though

technically they share the same cpu (its also in the ipad) but the difference is the iphone4 is underclocked to 800MHz i believe and epics are full 1GHz

isnt ipad cpu clocked at 1GHz as well?

Believe so, but Froyo on the Nexus One supposedly destroyed the iPad in some test. Read an article a while back.

I can believe that to be true in CPU terms.

GPU is what Snapdragon misses, and ultimately, what makes a lot of the phone work faster.

I had an Evo and am planning to buy an Epic this weekend... this topic is really helping a lot.

The things that have convinced me to make the switch are the screen, GPU, and physical keyboard.

Better camera is nice, too!

Evo was great, but it just seems like the Epic is capable of so much more.

The only thing that worries be is that the Epic will not have as active of a dev community as the Evo and HTC. :(

Truthfully id just wait... The holiday line up is sure to produce something even better then the epic most likely...

gpu on the Evo is suitable for most of the games. Yes, it's 4x worse than the Hummingbird gpu, but it can still handle a lot of the 3d games decently.

No. It can't. I do a LOT of gaming on my devices. Evo is the worst gaming phone I have seen. Palm Pre beats it out of the water, which is a year older.

Epic.... well.... no comparison

LauncerPro (or Pro Plus) vs Samsung's launcher

Can anyone tell me if you have an answer to estebancam's Q:
Will that change anything from the Samsung launcher?

I would like to keep Samsung's launcher. I like swiping side to side, that way I have an idea of where the application is in case I forget the name of the application. Rather than scrolling through hundreds of apps in one continuous motion.

I tried the regular Launcher Pro and was dissatisfied and liked the original launcher Samsung had bundled with the Epic better. I deleted the Launcher Pro but now I have messed up my Epic home screen so I have to scroll up and I got stuck with only three home screens. Help.

Epic lovers, I just posted a thread in Evo-Land and would love your input, too. It is a very specific Evo vs. Epic thread--I am a musician & blogger and would be grateful for OBJECTIVE input on which of these two BEASTS is the way for ME to go (see my OP for my priorities). I posted in their camp because I am leaning slightly toward the Epic. If you do come comment, please try to be objective and advise me without justifying your own choice & priorities, OK?

Thanks,
Fletch

Does anybody have a comparison on the two antenna strengths? I have been trying to find some information on it but haven't gotten a definite answer either way. Thanks!

I don't have a scientfic comparison, but I can tell you that the evo and the epic are prety much equal in performance there. I didn't notice any difference when switching, and I look at my bars a lot.
