GPS fix

Can someone help me change it back to north america? Apparently im one of a kind with this problem, but my gps has become worse than ever after applying it, actually I guess nosquid agrees. I edited the config file with text editor (mac) that ol boy uploaded, I changed the us to north-america but i couldnt replace the file with any file editor. I also tried unzipping the cwm one and changing the file in that, then compressing it into a zip with zip utility (mac) and tried flashing that, but it just froze, so I yanked its life support. And am now here. Is there a relatively easy way to modify cwm files? I don't want to request anyone else to do it , but if its just changing a few words somewhere and using a certain program, then... someone telling me that would be nice. Feel free to brush me from your shoulder if this is too extreme of a request.

Not sure if someone helped you already but all you have to do to change your GPS back to North America is get into the gps.conf file.

Go into Root Explorer (make sure you're mounted as R/W) then go to /etc/gps.conf
You're going to long press the gps.conf file, then when the menu pops up scroll down to "Open in Text Editor". Once you open gps.conf in text editor take that first line and change it from NTP_SERVER=us.pool.ntp.org back to NTP_SERVER=north-america.pool.ntp.org

That's probably the easiest way to do it. Hope this helped:)

Hey everyone and especially NOsquid. I've been following the XDA thread like I said I would, and you called it NOsquid about the possibility of this fix not sticking after the phone sat all night long with the GPS off. Not everyone, but a few people reported this over at XDA. But those people who reported it also said they rebooted their phones and the instalock came right back after the reboot. Thought I would share this info with everyone, but especially you NOsquid as you are definitely more knowledgeable than I when it comes to this. I figured the more info that knowledgeable people had, the better chance we had of someone coming up with a permanent solution to the Fascinate's GPS problems. Thank you everyone for your continued input.

The gps will always be a great mystery on this phone. At least Samsung has gotten it working for most people in a reasonable amount of time, outside where it counts. Testing inside is just for grins, it's pretty useless. There are times when I'm getting lost at 70mph where I really wish it was instant lock like on my crappy old Blackberry, but at least I expect it to lock within a minute now. When this phone was released it might literally take 10.

It might be some Touchwiz/Verizon black magic too. I haven't been on AOSP in a while but I seem to recall gps being pretty beasty. Anyone have the same experience?

I flashed this fix but haven't tested it much yet, but curious how I would undo this fix if I didn't like it?

I didn't do anything but download GPS fix and since then, my battery has been draining faster than ever. It took me three days to remember that I had downloaded GPS Fix, and I am not sure that this caused my battery drain. One thing I do know is that prior to installing this app, I had fairly good battery life. Now it requires a re-charge during the day.

I uninstalled the app and will see if that makes a difference.

Updated 4-21-11: It was the GPS Aide that was causing the battery drain. It's been 11 hours and I am at 50% battery level. With GPS Aide, I would be down to below 15% by now.

It took installing the zip, the gps aid, force closing and clearing data from navigation, and restarting... but I finally got a quick lock.

First time ever it's taken less than 15 minutes and probably only the third time it's ever actually worked.

Thanks guys.

It did the same for me, uninstalled it and back to normal.

I just manually edited the conf file as instructed in post #1 and installed gps aid.from the market. Instant lock. Thanks!

You're welcome. I'm just the messenger. The real thanks go to calebv2 over at XDA.

Updated my wifes phone to Stock Froyo, instant lock on GPS! No wifi, nothing, just instant lock, in my kitchen, which has never happened before.

I flashed the GPS fix via CWM and ran GPS Aids and it is AWESOME!!!

Before I could only get GPS with google/verizon GPS. (Standalone wouldn't find me at all.)

I just kicked on standalone GPS only and it pinned me at my house. (Satellite layer showed dead center on my roof.) Normally it would be within the neaighborhood but not this accurate.)

It showed you dead center on your roof? SANTA?????? :p:D

Thanks for the info. See if the improvements stick after having GPS off all night. That's been the only problem for people who have had success with this MOD. If you are back to GPS sucking tomorrow morning, reboot your phone and see if the super accurate instalock comes back. Thanks.

Didn't show ME, it showed my blue triangle.:p

just tried option 1 (using root explorer to manually change), downloaded gps aids, rebooted phone and went outside to see if there was any improvement. unfortunatetly for me there was no noticable improvement, but my gps wasn't too bad to begin with after upgrading to superclean 2.9.2. i get a lock usually within 1-2 mins (in a major city). not the fastest, but nowhere near as bad as when i first got the phone (5-7 mins). thanks for the post though!

Same here, still sucks.

After you downloaded GPS aids, did you open the app and save changes?

I finally gave this a try and It seems my phone has trouble locking up my position it takes like 5 tries to get it close to where i am. GPS aids wasnt allowing me to download XTRA so I ran GPS status which was helped a little. I had a better setup on DL09 and the north-american.pool so ill revert back to it after a couple more tests on this MOD.

yep. First time worked, but then went back and it would not lock on to let me save the changes, so no luck anytime now.

Ok, thanks for the info. I will keep everyone updated as best I can with any new info from XDA
