GPS icon will not go away

Hi all, I've also got the M8 with AT&T and I'm having the exact same issue everyone else is but tried all the troubleshooting steps recommended and still no luck. Should I wait for a software update or should I switch out the phone?

The issue has something to do with ATT from what I gather. There has been a few threads on this topic over the past few weeks. The issue is coming from the Carrier IQ. If you are able to disable it, then the issue will stop. I have had the GPS issue for a few weeks now. I am hoping Lollipop will fix the issue.

I've had this same problem and I recently noticed that all the HTC Android phones in a local AT&T store were all exhibiting this similar behavior. So, I reached out to HTC about this. Summary - wait for a fix... :(

Initial Question/Comment: After updating to Android 4.4.4 OTA, with location services off and no applications permitted to use location services other than e911, the GPS is constantly running. More than 3.5 hours out of a 24 hour period are dedicated to GPS. Last chat suggested booting into recovery mode and wiping the cache Performed these steps and GPS is still active. This really appears to be an issue introduced with the Android 4.4.4 update for AT&T,

It happens everywhere I go. I can even be in my home all day and it will use 3-4 hrs of battery in a 24 hour period. Google Maps version 9.2.0.
6:02:00 PM Agent
We are investigate all reported issues we do apologize for the inconvience we will get you to check for device updates and download them when there available .
6:02:36 PM Customer
So to be very clear. This issue started happening after I installed the HTC Android 4.4.4 OTA update. Is the only fix to rollback to 4.4.2?
6:03:09 PM Customer
it seems to be clearly related to e911 as it is the only service listed with non-optional location services usage
6:03:20 PM Customer
Can you comment on this?
6:03:41 PM Customer
Telling me to apply software updates is not a resolution
6:03:55 PM Customer
Why would you suspect Google Maps is the issue?
6:04:04 PM Agent
There is no fix at this time the only thing we can do is wait for the update to come out so we can get this issue fixed for our customers.
6:04:19 PM Customer
What update?
6:04:35 PM Customer
To an app or to the OS?
6:05:04 PM Agent
I believe it will be a OS although our team is still investigating this issue .
6:05:17 PM Customer
So this is a known issue then?
6:05:56 PM Agent
This is a unknown issue that we are investigating to see what is causing the issue .
6:06:35 PM Customer
I see. Should be easy to identify with a profiler or logging....
6:07:26 PM Agent
We do apologize for the inconvience we are looking into this for our customers and we hope to have a fix soon .
6:07:47 PM Customer
So you have answered my questions. There is nothing I can do except 1) rolling back to the 4.4.2 ROM, 2) Install a third party ROM, or 3) Move to another vendor.
6:08:37 PM Customer
Thanks for your time. Can you create some documentation somewhere to notify customers who are experiencing this battery drain?
6:08:44 PM Agent
Yes unfortunately there is no way to go back on the ROM we have to wait for another update to come out to fix this issue or a patch .

There seems to be something wrong with the AT&T 4.4.4 update, at least mine didn't pop up until then, that is causing the GPS to trigger and the phone to stay awake. My HTC service pack didn't update anytime close to when the issue cropped up for me. I've had my phone go from 80ish% to 20ish% in about 3 or 4 hours with little to no use by me but it shows a solid 3 or 4 hours of the phone being 'awake'. Short of swapping for a phone that has 4.4.2 and not updating I don't think much, if anything, will fix it short of a firmware update. Even then AT&T's documentation says that after so long they'll force the 4.4.4 update if you keep delaying. Not sure I buy the e911 thing since other carriers don't seem to have this issue, but who knows what AT&T tinkered with.

Lollipop is right around the corner so hopefully that will fix it but I don't have a lot of faith.

Update to my issue, I got a warranty replacement and that seemed to fix my issues with the GPS.

So I installed the latest software update, 5.0.2, and GPS is still turning on with the location Services off, so annoyed!!! I called At&t and they said they haven't seen this as a known issue and I'm not about to get a replacement phone if this is a software bug. Anyone else who has installed the update still having the same problem? I know that ultimately, it isn't the worst thing in the world but it irks me.

Lollipop didn't fix it :-(

Lollipop did NOT fix it for me either. I got a replacement phone a week before lollipop and that did not fix the issue. Was hoping lollipop would but it has not. The only difference now is that it turns on the GPS widget every time the gps icon starts flashing. I then have to turn off the GPS widget.

I will say that four hours ago i went through and disabled location requests from google play services, android system, and htc service pack. I have not had the gps flashing since then. Before the update, disabling location requests for these did nothing for the issue. So we will see if this fix sticks or if it comes back.

I can't believe AT&T is covering their ears and denying that this is their issue like a child when there are so many reported complaints, and the complaints are ONLY for HTC one users with AT&T. Even the service tech at their service center in my town was aware it was a common issue. If i didn't have my phone through my company, I would dump AT&T in a heartbeat (for mainly other customer service issues but this one is the icing on the cake.) I am in charge of the tech at our company so as soon as i can get the owners approval we will be moving to a different provider.

It does seem to be affecting my phone now. I feel like it was while I was at work. I feel that the issue is always worse at work, but it was not worse before 4.4.4. It is just confusing to me. I will rep port back tomorrow after another with lollipop.

I've kept getting this issue on the ATT m8 with whatever the latest version of android was prior to lollipop. I have gotten a new phone, resets it, yada yada yada... and still had the stupid issue. I don't know if it's an ATT problem or M8 problem.

I have moved onto M9 just because of it.

Have 5.0.2 from AT&T and still have to force the iq in system to stop the GPS.

Same thing for me. Anytime I restart and sometimes even without restarting I have to stop IQ Agent in Android Services. Doubles battery life.

How do you stop it?

I would imagine he means Settings > App manager > All and then select the app and select to force stop. While you're there, see if you can disable it (you may not be able to if it's considered a system app).

Thanks. I found it and stopped it. I am guessing it comes back on at some point, right?

Yeah, most likely with a reboot it will come back, maybe sooner. If you can disable it, that would prevent it from starting at all, but disable is not an option for apps that are considered system apps unless you have root access on your phone.

I got the M9, and knock on wood, there's no carrier iq!!!!! so far so good with the gps staying OFF! :-)
