GS5: Galaxy S5 vs. HTC One (M8)

Re: Galaxy S5 vs. HTC One (M8)

I'm glad M8 owners love their phone. They have a lot of reasons to. I just can't see how you can look at both phones, devoid of personal preference, and not see how the S5 is better overall.

Better is subjective. What's better to one person isn't better to another.

Re: Galaxy S5 vs. HTC One (M8)

I have both in my possession right now and I am trying to decide which one to keep. Here is my personal scorecard:

1) Physical build-I like both phones. The GS5 fits in the hand nicely and I like the fact it is not overly tall, like the M8. The GS5 rattles when it vibrates. I can also feel a vibration in the phone when I am talking on it. A little disconcerting to say the least. The M8, on the other hand, is rock solid. No rattles, no vibrations. Just a block of phone. Crafted out of one piece is how it feels. On the downside, HTC refuses to put the power button on the side of the phone. So you are reminded of just how bad a design that is every time you have to shut off the phone. The GS5 uses a proper placement for the power button. In terms of on screen vs capacitive buttons. I find myself hitting the home button frequently instead of the space button when typing. In theory I like the on screen buttons, but in practice I think I like the capacitive.
2) Software-I really do like Sense better than touch wiz, BUT, I do like the new touch wiz much better than versions past. There are wierd things that Samsung does though that really annoy me. Like why does blocking mode put a permanent symbol in my notification space at the top of the screen? Even when not actually in use? Why does the keyboard not return to the alphabet after I add a question mark at the end of a sentence? Why does it warn me that most functions will be disabled if I dare to use a pebble smart watch? On the other hand, Sense is excellent. Everything works exactly as it should.
3) Camera-both cameras are very good. I used the M8 all last week and go some really nice shots. All the talk about it being "crap" just sounds ignorant after you have actually used it. The GS5 camera is very good as well, I would say slightly better. Taking a picture in low light can be frustrating as the camera tells you to "hold steady while the picture is being processed". I dont even know what that means but it pretty much ruins any shot as my 2 year old refuses to hold his pose while the camera does its thing.
4) Speed-Both phones are plenty fast. No complaints at all.
5) Battery life-This was interesting, and is the most important trait in a phone for me. The M8 started out fantastic. Unbelievable really. Since the first 5 days though it has taken a turn for the worse. The GS5 started out horrible. Then settled down is now better the than M8 was when I first started using it.
6) Accessories-I bought the S view flip cover and I have to say that I really enjoy it. I have tried to find the Dot view case for the M8 but apparently HTC only made 3 of them.

Today I have to make my decision and I think im going to go with the GS5. While I do think the M8 is a better made device, the battery life is a deal breaker for me.

the end.

1. Agree with everything you said on design. M8 is definitely a "nicer" device. But the utility of the S5 design I think has won me over. Feels better in hand. Prefer the button layout. IP67 Water/Dust resistance is big for me. I LOVE the display.
2. Agreed. The blocking mode in the notifications annoys the heck out of me. Overall love the new touchwiz in the GS5 but still slightly prefer Sense (gallery, camera app, email, settings menus, etc.) I love the much more easy to access toggles of touchwiz in the notification shade though.
3. Turn off the Picture Stabilization which is on by default. Makes taking pictures of little humans much easier. I also find that my pictures seem to come out more clearly with this off. Love the camera on both devices. Pictures definitely are nicer from the S5 but not to the extent some of these Samsung diehards are screaming. In fact, I find the S5 camera to be quite overhyped and find the increase in quality to be negligible from my Note 3. I actually prefer the M8 camera for the nice "gimmicks". I like the U-Focus, Foregrounder, and other effects that can be applied after the pics, and the Zoes/Highlights.
5. I'm seeing nearly the same battery life out of both devices. Maybe 20-30 min more screen time out of the GS5.

All in all, I love both devices although I like the S5 a little more....I think. I've made my decision on which one I'm going to return.....

Neither.

Both are great devices and no matter which device one chooses it is not the wrong device. I hate these flaming wars that occur each time a new flagship is released.

Uhhh... Argue? You mean a difference of opinion don't you? Similar to what you post; in fact you appear to have some need to, as you say, "argue" with anyone that says anything disparaging about the M8. In fact it appears that you seek out those that are not particularly crazy about it.....again, creepy (I fell victim to your stalking when I posted about the M8 screen size).
Why does it bother you so much that there are people that do not like the phone? Isn't good enough that you like it, apparently not.
On a different note, didn't you question me why I was on the M8 board considering I did not care it? Let me see, went something like this:

If anything I have contributed has "enlightened" anyone, well then, time well spent.
And from what I've seen there have been plenty of likes, thanks and quotes.
Simple as that.
Your issue as well as others is that you bought the phone and any remark that questions your decision seems to threaten, when in fact it shouldn't.

Your good at the pot calling the kettle black.....
Anyone with a differing opinion is "arguing" even though you have a differing opinion I don't recall anyone accusing you of arguing?
You don't know why someone that does not own or care for M8 would be on the board...do you own an S5, clearly you don't care for it....a little hypocrisy going on here?
I'm going to take a huge leap here and say that a huge number of members frequent different boards regardless if they own or like that particular item.....surprise!

Adranalyne why do you feel the need to Argue every Point an M8 owner makes?? we all have different needs and what feels good to you may not feel good to another. it's like you take it personal... newflash. the S5 is not the end all of cell phones. relax and let people enjoy what they enjoy.

I would LOVE to keep both. I might actually do it to if they both took the same size sim card.

I found a good sim adapter and switch back and forth. I know Jerry had a good write up about the no-nos of using a sim adapter but I haven't had an issue when using one with a Samsung device. The only time I ran into issues was in my Lumia 1020 where I had to perform a little surgery to get it out.

Re: Galaxy S5 vs. HTC One (M8)

Hopefully AT&T S5 will have root soon, im already considering the M8 just for the fact that Its rootable, unlockable, and convertable. Google Play edition m8 vs S5 is already running through my head.

Also, for some annoying reason (even though I have facebook sync off) I keep getting a icon like an iphone an the homescreen of the notifications in facebook. How the hell can I turn that off?

See, the problem is that there are a few people posting here that don't understand the difference between an opinion and a fact, and are posting like they are the same thing. That's why I'm LOL'ing reading this thread and not actually diving too much into the discussion (if that's what you want to call it) that's going on.

I would love to give more of my opinion, but I'm afraid that a few folks will take it as me stating a fact, since that seems to be the trend lately.

Re: Galaxy S5 vs. HTC One (M8)

I don't own the M8 or I am even defending the camera per se. All I am saying is that there is no way I would by a 2014 flagship own with only 16GB for the reasons I've already stated. There is a certain hypocrisy when it comes to what people choose to ignore. I feel the same way about Apple offering 8 GB phones which is even worse. I would wait for the 32GB version of the GS5. But of course it will be more expensive hence the reason they thought they could slide it by people like yourself who don't find it unacceptable and be in the same price point as the 32GB M8. HTC has invested too much it that UltraPixel tech but should just make the second camera a 13MG shooter to compliment the other camera. But they are trying to save money somewhere as well. They ALL do this.

Because that's an opinion. In your opinion it is better... To someone else they may like the M8 a lot more so they can say it's better.. It is their opinion.

Just like me.. I like the M8 look and I'm sure I'd like the functionality of it (I had an M7) but in my opinion... I think the Note is the best series... But again that's for my needs and that's just how I see it :). Not everyone will agree but that's okay.

Exactly, everything is a compromise. 4mp is a compromise so they could have bigger pixels just like smaller pixels on the s5 is a compromise so they could have 16mp

That's you, because for me, I've never needed more than a 16GB ROM smartphone, with 86 downloaded apps, Sygic Navigation with 3 States Maps and My Movies PRO with all my 250+ movies database, and the rest of OEM stuff, I still have over 8.5GB available, why do I need to think that 16GB is a thing of the past? If they offer a 32GB for the same price than a 16GB then I'd get it, but while I still have the choice to save some money, no matter how little, it's good for me.

My Pictures, My Music, My Videos and all the different stuff that I want available when I switch phones are in my 32GB SD card, and even in that I still have about 17GB available.

So, again, in your case if 16GB is not enough, then go get a 32GB phone, good for you, the same goes for me, 4 Ultra (Suma, Supra or whatever they fancy to call it) pixels is not enough, simply because I use my phone as my only camera, and I do want to be able to use a great photo and crop it, edit it and create my 8x10's from it...So I get the phone that gets me what I want, and that's the S5.

Re: Galaxy S5 vs. HTC One (M8)

I have a Note 3 as my work phone, and an HTC EVO 4GLTE as my personal phone. I really like the Note, so I came into my personal phone upgrade with an open mind between the M8 and S5.

I really wanted to like the S5, but after using both, I just couldn't.
- I like the overall design of the S5. It looks much better in person than in pictures, and feels better than I anticipated. The back has a nice texture to it, and the "band-aid" effect is much more subdued than it looks in pictures (I was looking at the black one). The M8 feels like a solid hunk of metal, and the design is absolutely stunning in person. So both phones feel great in hand, but for different reasons.
- Yes, the M8 is disproportionately tall for its screen size. Almost as tall as my Note 3. But the M8 is narrower, so it's still easy to operate with one hand.
- The S5 display is a noticeable improvement over previous SAMOLED screens, but I still prefer LCD.
- Camera - not really a deciding factor for me
- Here's where the S5 really fell flat compared to the M8, IMO. TW is improved, but it's still a cartoony mess, and apparently it's still a resource hog. Moving about through the UI, it just felt sluggish. It couldn't even scroll through it's own settings menu without stuttering. Whereas everything on the M8 was snappy and immediate, and Sense is very polished, cohesive, and professional-looking compared to TW. I know you can throw something like Nova Launcher on an S5 to mitigate TW (I used to use Nova when Sense wasn't very good), but why should you? The whole time I was playing with the S5, I was thinking I'm going to have to root and ROM this thing to get it right. I felt no desire to do that with the M8.

Overall, the M8 just felt like a more solid, cohesive phone both physically and in software, so that's why I chose the M8.

and I'm sure your going to be here to quote anyone who forms an opinion of their own and disagrees with your assessment of a particular device. To me, that is borderline baiting and trolling which if it continues will be handled appropriately.
Yes I'm doing this publicly which I normally don't do but in this situation its warranted because you have shown little or no regard to those who wish not to share your view.

But as you say " IMO " disclaimer believing that it justifies your comments after you have discredited an individual for having an opposing opinion.

As for this discussion/debate please do let it continue just keep in mind to give each poster an equal level of respect for their opinions.

Well you've already banned me once for having a negative view on a phone you like, so this isn't a surprise. To pretend like yourself, others on this staff, and other sites don't have a bias towards certain devices is absolutely hilarious. It's just the way it is now.

As far as I'm concerned, there's no need to continue going forward with it. I made my case. I could care less if there's an "IMO" or not added to anyone's posts here. There's portions of devices that can be measured to make it better or worse than another device. You, and other HTC enthuasists, just aren't happy when it doesn't fall in your favor.

And last I checked, this is a debate thread. I'm not calling anyone stupid. I'm not calling anyone any names. I'm disagreeing and explaining why. If I don't get banned for speaking my mind, do I need to wear kid gloves from now on?

Given your past here @ AC you know that is a false statement and RARELY is anyone banned for one particular post outside of spammers & discrimination/harassment.
To pretend like yourself, others on this staff, and other sites don't have a bias towards certain devices is absolutely hilarious. It's just the way it is now.
I have owned branded Samsung's, Nexus, Blackberry, HTC & iPhone and each has their pros and cons and I have no particular " favorite ". So branding me with that is false. Tomorrow I may own a Moto, LG or Sony and all that will matter is what works for me not anyone else. I'm a volunteer here at Android Central and that said I'm not paid or pushed to support, drive or be bias towards anyhing in particular. I love the platform in general and like to see the success of all OEMs that use it.
As far as I'm concerned, there's no need to continue going forward with it. I made my case. I could care less if there's an "IMO" or not added to anyone's posts here. Exactly, you have made sure your assessment out weighs anyone else and as you said " you could care less " who you step over in the process.

Give everyone the same respect you feel you deserve when your on the soapbox and quit looking over your shoulder worried about if your posts are going to get yourself in trouble. If everyone participates appropriately then there is no need to be on the defensive concerning the tone or actions over their comments ;)

If you wish to continue this conversation I'll be happy to take it to PM because I'm sure here are others in this thread that wish not to watch this sideshow.

Re: S5 vs. HTC M8

Actually, only one.
M8 is better => No KNOX bootloader.
I'll agree on the latter part of your comment. I believe KNOX should be an optional service or version of device aimed more at business and security sensitive individuals or companies. But in today's realm of thinking added security like KNOX is the new standard like it or not.

Re: Galaxy S5 vs. HTC One (M8)

I hate that the S5 has a locked down bootloader. When other companies started locking down there were "boycotts" and all kinds of other craziness. It's OK for Sammy to lock down? Does no one root and rom anymore?

I own the S5 currently so I'm not biased at all. I've had Nexus devices the last few years and haven't worried about such things. But I remember a locked device wasn't favored by the community. What changed?

Seems clearer every day now. You want to play you get the Developer Edition/Google Play model. Otherwise sit back and enjoy the locked down goodness w/KNOX, etc and hope that eventually one day a talented dev will come along and crack the code for safely unlocking and rooting if that is your thing.

Unfortunately not all devices have a developer version on Verizon.
