[GUIDE][8/1] Jelly Bean Now! Resources & Discussion

Re: [GUIDE][7/1] Jelly Bean Now! Resources & Discussion

Hm. Are there any JB kernels that do better for battery life, then? Maybe I'll hold off on playing around with kernels for now...

Also, this is a really stupid "noob" question, but I'm used to AOKP allowing you to reboot into recovery when you hold the power button down, which obviously isn't an option in Jelly Belly. Once the phone is powered down, how do you boot into CWM to flash stuff?

Trinity has been great for my battery. Franco was good as well.

To get into recovery, power off then hold down VOLUME UP, VOLUME DOWN, and POWER simultaneously. It'll vibrate. Use the volume toggle to find "Recovery Mode" and hit the power button to select it.

If you forget those instructions, it's in one of the main guide posts up front somewhere :).

I do it through ROM manager, there's a button to reboot into recovery

I've been using ROM manager to get to recovery. Someone posted a mod over at XDA that adds recovery to the power menu. Not sure I trust that one though! I'd love to hear if anyone flashes that mod and how it turns out. :p

A buddy of mine has on G+. I haven't personally, though; Trinity Kernel Toolkit has a widget for rebooting into recovery :).

Re: [GUIDE][7/1] Jelly Bean Now! Resources & Discussion

Good morning dmmarck and others! It's been a long time since I flashed roms and kernels, but I don't want to be left out of enjoying JB since it will probably take VZW around the end of the year to push out an update. Anyway, I've rooted my Nexus using the Wug's toolkit and I installed CWM with the root. I want the most stable and issue-less rom with a purely stock look and feel. I've decided on Jelly Belly 1.8 and I found the download site here.... /gnex/jellybelly/ . Do I download just the 1.8 zip and gapps, or 1.8/gapps/stock? Also, what order do I install them when in CWM? Also should I bother with the Trinity kernal? Sorry for all the questions, I should know better, but I'll take any help I can get. Thanks.

No problem, that's why we're here.

You want to download (1) the 1.8 file, and (2) the GAPPS from 7/1.

Reboot into CWM, do a wipe of EVERYTHING--data, cache, dalvik, and go to mounts/storage and format /system. Hell, do it twice!

Then, flash the 1.8 rom zip FIRST and the GAPPS second. If you forget about the GAPPs, then power down your phone (immediately lol) and flash them.

I recommend trinity, so far it's been the best kernel for my device. However each device responds differently, so if you find a kernel, try it for a day before giving up!

If you want to use trinity, download it, place it on your SDcard (like you would a rom), and reboot into CWM and flash it. I recommend a cache/dalvik wipe b/c that's always safe.

Re: [GUIDE][7/1] Jelly Bean Now! Resources & Discussion

I haven't updated to the JB14 version yet .Im still on the JB13 version ..;)
I didnt know the Trinity Kernel Toolkit had different widgets depending on how you wanted to reboot.
I have been using the Quick Boot App. :)

Me neither, but it's a great little tool once I found it!

For what its worth Trinity gave my Gnex nothing but trouble (kept freezing and rebooting). Flashed back to Franco r210 and have had great success...

Yeah each device is different in this regard. Did you try overclocking it past the default setting? If smart reflex (MPU) were enabled that INSTANTLY does it. He's working on the fix now, FWIW.

I'm at 1689 and loving it :).

LOL that's morfic's sense of humor. Did it reboot and give you a trinity boot animation? If so you're good to go :).

For OC settings, I presume they're at 1500 + MHz with either ondemand or performance governors.

For wiping, yes, I'd still wipe when going between roms (so VanirBEAN to ENGAGE). But if you're going from V3 to V4 or something like that, wiping only cache/dalvik should be sufficient. Like anything, though, if you don't start off 100% clean (meaning you didn't wipe data), you may have a few bugs lying around.

I went with 1689. Presumably the 1344 (or whatever is 13XX) is the "bulletproof" one with it getting "more experimental" as you creep up in max CPU potential.

And it makes it faster the higher you go (if you set it higher), but it also drains the battery quicker.

My phone rebooted, so yeah, it just kind of freaked me out since I didn't hear a mention of this before. The trinity boot animation was a little choppy though. I tried a recovery zip file to put the stock animation back. That didn't seem to take, so I did it manually. Haven't rebooted yet to test it out.
I guess getting the Trinity app is the way to go. I am not looking to set records in benchmarking. I was just a little disappointed when I first ran it to get around 2450. Now that I am in the normal zone, I am more concerned with battery life.

Thanks for all the information!

That was my biggest issue. When I would go into toolbox is would freeze immediately. I could never get it to actually oc. So now on franco I'm running it to 1600 and its flying. Life is good :D

Yeah you had to disable that option :).

I see. Oh well, will probably play with that later. To many other things to do :-) Thanks for the info.... and the whole thread for that matter

Just converted to JB last night, haven't had much time to play with it, but love it so far. Wondering if i should switch out from franco kernal, it appears yes is the answer...

I'm having amazing results with Franco. Refer to the screenshot I posted last night :)

Just a few questions I have regarding all of these new never-ending updates...
First of all, before last night I couldn't get a quadrant above 2500. I flashed the Franco r210 linaro kernel and got to 34xx.
I don't have the Trinity kernel, since it looked like everyone was downloading it through the app, which I have yet to purchase before I try out the kernel personally. Is there a link to the official JB14 kernel? I downloaded one last night and when I installed it, it basically said" BOOM... you have successfully corrupted your system. Please panic now. " WTF is that all about. That's when I immediately flashed the Franco kernel.

What OC settings is everyone using to get 4000 scores?

Also, maybe a dumb question, but need to ask...it seems that these builds are no longer considered stock ROMs anymore. I am running Vicious v2 since it was available. Are full wipes required from moving between ROMs now? In the first fee days of the release of Jellybean this didn't seem to be the case.
Thanks.

I just put in the franco r210 kernal and i'm getting 33** but not above. haven't touched voltages yet...

I haven't messed with voltages. Are you using Wheatley governor?

That is what I switched to after giving trinity a go. I'm getting 33** in the benchmarks, not quite the 4+ you were getting, but impressive nonetheless.
