[Guide] How to Backup, Restore & Install ROMs on The Thunderbolt

Does "flash from bootstrapper" mean the same thing as "go into cwm and install from zip"? If not then how are they different?

Re: [Guide] How to Backup, Restore & Install ROMs on The Thunderb

im a first time rooter and i have already rooted and i have the new BAMF on my phone as well as the gingerbread radio... my question is whether or not to format/cache or format/system after i have wiped my data, etc, but before i flash the new ROM? i have read 3 different tutorials and 1 did not mention formatting anything, another said to format/cache, and the third said to do format/system?

which is right?

thanks a lot for any advice

Re: [Guide] How to Backup, Restore & Install ROMs on The Thunderb

You should wipe all 3 just to be safe. System, cache, and dalvik cache. If you are going to just upgrade your BAMF some people say you can dirty flash. Meaning just wipe the 2 caches. I personally didn't like the idea of possibly corrupting a file, then having to go back and wipe all 3 anyways.

Re: [Guide] How to Backup, Restore & Install ROMs on The Thunderb

thanks for help, but i had already wiped all 3... my question was about going to "Mounts and storage">"format /system".... which is what i ended up doing as that was suggested on the teamBAMF forum, which was the ROM that i planned on flashing... another tutorial had just said to do format/cache, and thin i think that this tutorial didnt even mention that...

Re: [Guide] How to Backup, Restore & Install ROMs on The Thunderb

yeah so i only formatted system, but i did NOT format cache or data before flashing my rom... do you think that could cause me some problems... i have been having issues with superuser forcloses.

I'm new to this....just trying to do some research before taking the plunge. I think I understand rooting and installing ROM's. However, What are the kernels/radios for? Do you HAVE to put these on your phone after you root? <very dumb questions. sorry>

Kernels are for your CPU speed as far as I know. They allow you to overclock your phone, but I never bother changing these personally.

The radio is for your 3G/4G data service. If the ROM you install doesn't include a radio, you have to find one that works with the ROM. Most ROMs now are based on Gingerbread (2.3.x) which requires you to upgrade your radio if you are still on Froyo (2.2.x). If you neglect to change out the radio, you won't have any service. If you do, it may be really poor.

Most ROMs will include any needed kernel or radio. I'm running BAMF Forever, and it included the radio. I think it changed the kernel too, but I'm not sure.

Sorry, but I have to correct this... ROM will always include a kernel.... but NO radio files. Some people like to replace their kernels because they can either overclock the new kernel or think it will run better then the one that came with the ROM.

Ok. So I have the gb that was relased for a short time. I was looking at bamf forever. Which radio do I need to install?

If you have the GB Stock Thunderbolt ROM, then you have a GB Radio... you don't need to do anything with the radio if you want to load BAMF Forever... suggest you go to RootzWiki to download the latest version though since they have not posted 1.0.8 on this site yet... either there or on TeamBAMF's website.

Also, you might think about using either Titanium backup or my personal favorite MyBackup Root and only backup the specific app's data files... I like to back Angry Birds Rio and a couple other app's data... do this before flashing the ROM... and of course make a current backup using Recovery of the entire ROM.

Whoops!

Should I install a new radio then? I'm running the radio I had on Froyo (it never updated to the OTA GB).

Baseband version is 1.39.00.0627r

SU has caused some headache for a bunch of people after a couple updates. A few of us got ours worked out by one of a couple different methods. Check Here and see if it helps you.

I believe your are running what is called the MR2 radio Diablo. That is compatible with GB, just and older baseband version. MR2 was a hybrid from what I've read, and works with both froyo and GB. The current radio list as of Sept 24th is here.

Ok. I'm new to this. I've rooted my phone. I've backed up all of my files. I need to get the rom that I want onto the SD card. How do I do this? I'm getting frustrated.

Re: [Guide] How to Backup, Restore & Install ROMs on The Thunderb

I backed up my rooted gb stock setup with a nandroid from rom manager and the next day a nandroid from cwm. When I looked in the backup folder I saw each is saved with the date as a title in its own folder. When I restore do I need to know the specific file in the folder to choose or merely the date (name of the subfolder)

Correct... There were some test builds that were released. MR2, then MR2.5 and then a newer MR2 which ended up being the same as the Official release by Verizon... That was the last update for Froyo. All of the MR2 radios were compatible with both Froyo and Gingerbread ROMs. The newest is MR3 which is the Official Gingerbread update released by Verizon which improves the radio as well as updates you to the newer operating system if using the RUU. The full RUU was released which includes the radios..... as well as just the radios by themselves for anyone running a custom ROM.

As for the SU permission errors.... I ran into the problem again when updating from Bamf Forever 1.0.7 to 1.0.8. I spent almost the whole day trying to fix it with no luck. I finally got it worked out by reflashing the ROM and not restoring SU which I had backed up from the previous version. Reflashed Bamf 1.0.8 and then went to the market and installed SuperUser from scratch which fixed everything. Restoring the SU app from a previous backup was what was causing the errors.

Easiest way...
Download Astro File Manager from the market
Go to the ROMs download link.
Download to your phone.
It should be saved to the Download Folder.
Follow the Guide.
When you get to the part for Install Zip from SD Card... Scroll down to your Download Folder... Select the ROMs zip and proceed with following the Guide.

If you have any other questions or need help... Just ask.. I'll be around for a little bit if you need someone to walk you through the procedure. Its very simple. The Guide is Step by Step of the Screenshots that you will see.

Is there anything that a battery pull.does.that isn't done by clearing cache and dalvik cache in cwm?

i dont think so... im still relatively new to this, but from what i gather, the battery pull is simply there in order to consolidate the process... after you flash your rom, you pull the battery in order to quckly power off the phone so that you can restart into HBOOT, and flash your radio from there. that way when you reboot after all that you are set to go...

Am i on the right track here people? or way off?

Re: [Guide] How to Backup, Restore & Install ROMs on The Thunderb

has anyone heard that Tesla coil having issues with crashing ( screen freezes and then phone reboots) alot. I did a full wipe and flashed the ROM and the radio as instructed

Re: [Guide] How to Backup, Restore & Install ROMs on The Thunderb

When installing a new rom it was my understanding I should copy the rom onto my sdcard but not in any folder.

If I go up a level in root explorer there is a separate folder called Root. It is two folders up from the folder called sd card. Do I copy the rom I want to install into that folder called Root or do I put it IN the SDCard folder but not in any of the folders inside there?

The reason I ask is when I try to install a rom that is just sitting on the SD Card but not in any folder on it the file is not visible in cwm. Cwm just shows me all the folders. If I put the rom IN a folder on the sd card I can browse to it in CWM and it IS visible.

When I go into recovery, then choose "install from sd card" then "choose zip" all it shows me is the FOLDERS on the SDCard. It doesn't show the the zip file or anything else.

Is there a problem installing roms that are IN a folder on the SDCard instead of NOT in a folder? I actually created a folder called Roms in the SDCard and placed forever 1.0.7 in it and was able to successfully flash the rom. The identical file on the SDCard but not in a folder is invisible to my CWM. I know it isn't zip.zip because it installed fine from the folder I created on the SDCard

Thanks for your help!
