I'm new to this....just trying to do some research before taking the plunge. I think I understand rooting and installing ROM's. However, What are the kernels/radios for? Do you HAVE to put these on your phone after you root? <very dumb questions. sorry>
Kernels are for your CPU speed as far as I know. They allow you to overclock your phone, but I never bother changing these personally.
The radio is for your 3G/4G data service. If the ROM you install doesn't include a radio, you have to find one that works with the ROM. Most ROMs now are based on Gingerbread (2.3.x) which requires you to upgrade your radio if you are still on Froyo (2.2.x). If you neglect to change out the radio, you won't have any service. If you do, it may be really poor.
Most ROMs will include any needed kernel or radio. I'm running BAMF Forever, and it included the radio. I think it changed the kernel too, but I'm not sure.
Sorry, but I have to correct this... ROM will always include a kernel.... but NO radio files. Some people like to replace their kernels because they can either overclock the new kernel or think it will run better then the one that came with the ROM.
Ok. So I have the gb that was relased for a short time. I was looking at bamf forever. Which radio do I need to install?

yeah so i only formatted system, but i did NOT format cache or data before flashing my rom... do you think that could cause me some problems... i have been having issues with superuser forcloses.
Whoops!
Should I install a new radio then? I'm running the radio I had on Froyo (it never updated to the OTA GB).
Baseband version is 1.39.00.0627r
I backed up my rooted gb stock setup with a nandroid from rom manager and the next day a nandroid from cwm. When I looked in the backup folder I saw each is saved with the date as a title in its own folder. When I restore do I need to know the specific file in the folder to choose or merely the date (name of the subfolder)
I believe your are running what is called the MR2 radio Diablo. That is compatible with GB, just and older baseband version. MR2 was a hybrid from what I've read, and works with both froyo and GB. The current radio list as of Sept 24th is here.
Ok. I'm new to this. I've rooted my phone. I've backed up all of my files. I need to get the rom that I want onto the SD card. How do I do this? I'm getting frustrated.
Is there anything that a battery pull.does.that isn't done by clearing cache and dalvik cache in cwm?
