[Guide] How to Backup, Restore & Install ROMs on The Thunderbolt

Wow... you got me stumped. It sounds like you know what you're doing but something must have gone wrong somewhere along the way. I flash roms all the time from my download folder so that wouldn't even be a problem. The only thing I can think of is if it was a bad download of the zip but you said you tried multiple sources. It sounds like you tried every possible solution but if you haven't done so yet... delete all the custom roms off your SD Card. Download the Bamf rom from your phone and try flashing it from your download folder. The rom links are on the first page or there's a Bamf remix link that I posted about 10 posts ago. Other then that... like I said, something went wrong somewhere down the line and only you would know what it would be so if you feel like re-rooting then that may be your only option.
Are you using the latest radio version? Settings... about phone... Baseband version: 1.16.00.0402w_1

Unless someone else has some idea of what's happening and wants to help out... I'm as lost as you are.

Hmmm... My baseband version is 1.16.00.0223r

Does that mean anything? Lol I actually don't know what I'm doing, just process of elimination and following your directions.

Let me take a look at the Rom... If its anything like the rom I'm using then... yea you need the new radio version to install it and this could be your problem. Let me double check.

What's your kernel version and are you using an app called SetCPU?

Edit: Nevermind, as long as your wiping the data it wouldn't even matter. I read about a few people who were having the same problem with the Das Bamf Rom and it took them a few tries to get it to work. I don't think re-rooting will help the problem. There's something going on with your phone and that rom and I don't know what it is. You can keep trying to flash it and see if it eventually goes through. If you get stuck in a boot loop pull your battery and keep trying.
1. Wipe data
2. Wipe cache
3. Wipe dalvik
4. Fix permissions
5. Install the Rom from SD card
6. Wipe data
7. Wipe cache
8. Wipe dalvik
9. Reboot

Also try flashing a different rom.

Fix permissions? I don't believe I've done that...

I've tried 3 different ROM's and this morning I flashed the new RUU+radio. ROM's still won't load. I'm half tempted to throw in the towel. Or at least take a break until my frustration goes away lol

You can try wiping data, clearing cache, clearing dalvik, then REPEAT that to be sure they are cleared entirely.. Then after you've cleared them twice, try to flash the rom. That might help

Yo... I am prolly getting the TB tomorrow morning.... I am rockin skyraider right now... obviously I am going to root it :) what Rom do you recommend and why? I figure since you know me the best you would be the best person to ask

Since you like skyraider you will probably like das bamf or any of the sense based roms. I really like das bamf but i have also been very busy with work etc and i haven't been trying as many roms as i would like (also very lazy).

Since bamf hit 1.6.2 with the newer kernels 4.4.5-7 my battery life has been awesome, like seriously doubled almost. I get a minimum of 3.5 hours awake time (screen on), which is good for me. Before i was probably getting like 2 hours or a little more.

I tried virus rom when it first came out, but bamf was more stable so i stuck with it. Haven't had a chance to try the other de sensed roms, but i hear good things about tesla coil (paired with imoseyon's lean kernel). People seem to really like that one.

Anyway, bamf is super stable these days, and the battery is good, and it comes with alot of options (new toolkit to mess with, etc), and since i use adw x i dont really have to see all the sense which i would generally rather avoid.

Let me know which rom you try first tho

I'm doing it the hard way. Last ditch effort. I just backed up my SD card to my computer, formatted SD Card, and did a factory reset. I'm gonna start from scratch. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Didn't work.

I'm about to Tbag my Tbolt, and then smash it with the fury of a thousand suns.

*whoosaw... whoosaw... whoosaw*

When trying this method to flash the new update zip from the XDA forums, I am good up until I choose the zip to install it. It says:

Finding update package...
Opening Update Package...
Installing update...
Installation aborted.

And that is all it gives me. What am I doing wrong here?

Which one are you trying to flash? You need to verify the md5 to make sure your download isn't corrupt. Or at least verify the file size

Ok so power off, power back on into bootloader and can I tell it which zip to use? Or should I rename it to PG05IMG.zip? Thanks in advance!

Hi all,

OK, I am ready to flash my Thunderbolt (stock ROM, rooted, has NOT received the recent OTA update) using the instructions listed in the 1st post. I am planning to use the latest Das BAMF.

My questions are:

1). IF I decided to go back to stock ROM, is this something that I can accomplish using ROM Manager? If not, how exactly I do this?

2). I am going to backup the stock ROM using ClockwordRecovery and then flash to Das BAMF. Now, if I want to backup the Das BAMF ROM, will it overwrite the stock ROM that I backed up earlier?

3). I read through this thread (well, not every posts) and it seems that certain custom ROM ONLY works with certain baseband. How do I find out which custom ROM works with a particular baseband? There is nothing in the custom ROM thread in XDA forum here that state that.

FYI, I came from iPhone and the jailbreak community always make it clear which jailbreak works and/or unlock which baseband very clearly. I.e. 01.59 can't be unclocked, 04.21 can, etc..etc..

4). I don't know if this is the right question in this forum, but will the updates to custom ROM include the latest OTA update to fix the current problem? For example, the Thunderbolt have issue with the video audio. So VZ pushed a new OTA update for stock ROM. Will the dev of Das BAMF incorporate that fix in the next version of their ROM?

Yes, same way... just flash the backup of your stock rom that you made.
2). I am going to backup the stock ROM using ClockwordRecovery and then flash to Das BAMF. Now, if I want to backup the Das BAMF ROM, will it overwrite the stock ROM that I backed up earlier?
No it will not overwrite the last backup.... you can make as many backups as you like. Each one will be labeled with the current date and a set of numbers which can be renamed to whatever you like either with ROM Manager or any file manager app. From ROM Manager.... Manage and Restore Backups.... Select backup file... Menu... Edit... Rename.
From a File Manager... SD Card... ClockworkMod... Backups... Select backup file... Menu... Edit... Rename.

They should all work unless listed that they require a certain baseband... I wouldn't worry about this. The only Rom that I've come across with that requirement was LightningRom... which requires the new radio in order to flash the latest rom build. Developers will list in their instructions for flashing their rom the requirements. It's always in the first post for everyone to see.

Yes you will most likely see OTA updates incorporated into the latest version of the custom rom weeks before Verizon even releases it along with other fixes and improvements that you will never see from Verizon.

question with the new radio installation talk i'm hearing about...say i was to install via ROM manager (download and install directly from the app and not putting the zip on the root of the sd card myself), do i also need to download these new radio files myself, that will need to be installed on the HBoot or will they be included with the ROM manager installation?
