[Guide] How to Backup, Restore & Install ROMs on The Thunderbolt

question with the new radio installation talk i'm hearing about...say i was to install via ROM manager (download and install directly from the app and not putting the zip on the root of the sd card myself), do i also need to download these new radio files myself, that will need to be installed on the HBoot or will they be included with the ROM manager installation?

No, they will not be included. The list of radios is here: http://forum.androidcentral.com/thu...adio-obligatory-thunderbolt-radio-thread.html
The newest being the first one on top of the list.
(1.13.605.7 CDMA/LTE combo)
Baseband: 1.16.00.0402w_1
To see what version radio you're using.. go to .. menu.. settings.. about phone.. software information.
To flash the radio, rename the zip to PG05IMG.zip if it's not already and place it on the root of your SD Card. Boot into Bootloader: power off your phone... Turn the phone back on by holding down the volume down rocker and the power button at the same time until the phone opens in bootloader. The zip should start running and updating the radio. Once done reboot the phone on and remove the PG05IMG.zip from your phone or move it off the root of the sd card in another folder. If its not moved after the installation it will constantly keep trying to update the radio if you ever need to boot into bootloader again to get to recovery.

Thanks, where in the installation process will this need to be placed according to your guide? Should i install the new ROM first, reboot, go back to the home screen, then power off again...then go into the bootloader and install the zip file? Also should i delete the stock RUU that i installed when i initially rooted my phone as to not confuse the zip files that will be placed the sd card? Or am i not allowed to delete that?

You can do either one first. Maybe do the radio first so you can make a backup of the stock rom with the new radio. Then make another backup after the new rom. You can make as many backups/restore points as you like.
Yea move the old PG05img.zip off the card and replace it with the new one.

when i went to go flash the radio in bootloader, nothing happened by itself, It just gave me the menu for fast boot, recovery etc. when i went into recovery i went to install from sd card. i scrolled down to the PG05IMG but it said .zip.zip, did i incorrectly name the file? on my desktop it just says PG05IMG.zip, should i take out the .zip on the desktop, delete the file on the sd and re-copy the just PG05IMG on the desktop to the root again (you mentioned to rename it PG05IMG.zip in the above instructions)? and after i do that just go back through recovery and scroll back down to the zip file? or am i missing something? did it not install right when i got into the bootloader if the file name was not correct?

Edit: would it not install automatically in the bootloader if the file name was not correct?

Your computer is hiding the extension name, so you can delete the .zip part on your cpu, or you can use a file manager (oi file manager is free) on your phone and just navigate to the file and correctly name it.

In hboot, only correctly named files will be found and prompted for installation, that's right.

also, if you want, you can turn off hidden file extensions on your windows cpu. I am a mac user so i can't tell you exactly how to do it, but it shouldn't be very difficult to figure out.

cyber warrior and zero-thanks a ton...final question is there a way to verify that the updated radio took?

You're welcome it should say:
1.13.605.7
Baseband: 1.16.00.0402w_1
To see what version radio you're using.. go to .. menu.. settings.. about phone.. software information.

hmm...it does not give me those numbers...i still have the same numbers as started before, hboot recognized it and installed the file, then when it asked me to press power to reboot, it did not reboot rather it turned off...i waited a minute or two then pressed the power and it booted up fine. I used astro file manager as zero had mentioned and edited it so it said .zip (but only in the edit box did it say PG05IMG.zip, then i pressed "OK:" and in the file manager the .zip itself disappeared and just had PG05IMG, no .zip). I may try the other computer based method to change those settings that zero had mentioned so it can find the file and name it properly. do you have windows 7 and if so can you just run me through that method?? or at least direct me to a thread that may be more appropriate?

edit: am i installing the wrong file? I thought we had to match up the numbers with the one on it currently, or are we supposed to be installing those other files as the top:

As far as fixing the hidden file extensions on your computer, I can't really help bc i'm not familiar with windows really. I would try right clicking on the file and looking through what options come up. If you can find it, you want the extensions to be visible, so that you don't end up with two of them.

i'll try the new radio this time thanks

ok here is the thing, i downloaded the new radio onto the desktop, was able to figure out where to check/un check hidden file extension...renamed the file .zip on the desktop, copy and pasted it into the root of the sd...then i went through astro file manager to check the .zip status. It was not there when i went just through the sd it said PG05IMG (no .zip) well i long pressed on the PG05IMG and hit edit...and in the box it DID say PG05IMG.zip, it had the .zip in the gray box...so i clicked ok, and then it only says PG05IMG still on the SD card...is this still safe for me to put through hboot?

*after edit i hit rename

it's safe, if it's named incorrectly it just won't be found and you won't be asked if you want to install it.

ok i think it was successful...i think, i went to software info and the baseband had changed to 1.16.00.0402w_1, but the software remained the same...1.12.605.6 is that supposed to be or is it supposed to be 605.7 as cyber warrior had mentioned

edit:i checked the md5 like a million times to make sure and it always matched up

Not sure you might have the new cdma/old lte combo radio instead of the new cdma/new lte radio.

It doesnt really matter as long as it works (you can test your download speeds by navigating your browser to speedtest.net and running a download/upload test).

If it's fast, i wouldn't worry about which of these radios you have (assuming you don't notice a worse connection to signals).

Or, now that you've done it and it's easy, you can download the radio again (this is the new cdma-new lte)

check the md5

and flash it again in hboot.

no connection issues yet, but i may end up flashing that later to make sure...and with these radios i should be able to install basically any good stable ROM like BAMF or thundersense for example, from here out right?

yup You can flash any thunderbolt rom currently available that is not based on Gingerbread.

There is one gingerbread exception that you can flash = cyanogenmod 7 pre alpha, but it's not exactly stable yet.

Dont forget to make a nandroid backup before you start flashing roms.
