[GUIDE] How to root, un-root and rom your Droid Incredible.

i did the steps to root my incredible but when i hit ok on the window at the unrevoked screen to start it says failed to push recovery. terminating what is happening

If you updated to Gingerbread, Unrevoked will not work as outlined here - The Unrevoked tam has yet to publish an updated procedure.

You would have to downgrade back to Froyo and root, then upgrade to a rooted Gingerbread.

Hope this helps.

Im new here but I've religiously checked this site everyday since I found it. But I'm wondering if anyone knows of an app that root the Dinc 1 running gingerbread build 4.08

Unfortunately, there is no root method yet go Gingerbread - you are going to have to downgrade to froyo to root, then flash any ROM you want.

edit: nevermind ... I already see S-OFF on the HBOOT screen. I guess it was handled automatically by unrevoked3. Nice!

Thanks for this thread! I rooted the device & am running CM7, for now anyway.

One question...it was late last night (and, I was dumbfounded by how automated unrevoked3 is); so, I never actually did step 8 HERE - installing unrevoked forever. Will it cause a problem if I install unrevoked forever now, after I'm already running CM7?

Um is this method still viable? I have the droid incredible i am trying to root is not wanting to be rooted with this method. It is running 2.2 and i used all the links on the root page too. I have gotten the error in the unrevoked window on my computer that root failed after on the phone it goes through the hboot screen but does nothing then reboots, once rebooted the phone displays a force close error of Zysploit unrevoked...something...something. I need some insight I have rooted all my phones before but can quite figure out why the easy method isnt going too well.

Exact steps of the problem: (Ill use UR for unrevoked3, PH for whats happening in the phone and, Hboot for what happens when phone is in hboot)

UR: pushes recover and other things that flash by really fast... then rebooting
Hboot: sits in hboot... then displays hboot usb plug. Nothing else happens in screen in UR or hboot.
UR: waiting for reboot ... waiting for phone to settle
PH: reboots
UR: running root...
PH: is up and already reboot to regular home displays: com.unrevoked.zysploit process has stopped
UR: failed to get root.

I know one yet another post. It is a problem that it is S-OFF but i definitely don't have root? I have repeated the unrevoked process so many times. Had no sdcard and let it do its thing. I decided to put sdcard back in its backed up so its ok. i though since i didn't notice unrevoked had disable security on phone all those times that was the thing that would be done in a later step after sdcard was replaced. I feel like there were too many variables I didnt know at first. I mean apparently at step 6 when your supposed to hit power button that interrupts the process.

IGNORE ALL THAT IT WORKED FINALLY IM PRETTY SURE IT WAS S-OFF RIGHT AFTER A TIME THAT IT TOOK. ALL OTHER TIME FAILED BEFORE AND AFTER FOR SOME REASON

Went to this site discovered by another AC user and was able to downgrade to Froyo (2.2) and root the thing. Now my question is, can I re-upgrade to Gingerbread now that I've rooted and turned S-off?

Do a search on here for a post I put in and there is a link to XDA where the ROM is that is the stock GB rooted. Extremely stable and quick.

There are also TONS of ROMs that are based on Gingerbread, including stock. CM7, MIUI, Sense ROMs, etc. Lots to choose from.

But what will happen if I allow the phone to run the Gingerbread update? Will it brick the phone, make my current Froyo-based ROM unusable, or simply not allow me to update? Thanks for your help.

So let me see if I get this right. Rooting really does nothing but allow access to stuff that HTC/Verizion said "i dont think so" to at the factory? So I can root and keep Sence(if you would be so posessed) or Go Launcher or ADW? Then from that point you can flash into something like CM7 or whatever you want and that will take the place of Go Launcher or whatever, or does flashing take the place of the operating system and you still need a launcher?

Yes. I am no expert in rooting, but this was a big surprise to me when I rooted my DInc. I used Unrevoked3 to unlock (root) the phone and was surprised to find I still had Sense, my apps, everything.

CM7 uses ADW launcher right out of the box.

OK with that said and nobody else adding their 2 cents in then it looks like tonight or tomorrow I will be rooting

i tried doin this but the unrevoked3 app window said that i dont have the correct version(2.3.4) and ive looked all over and cant find anything jus to downgrade to a version where i can root my phone. can anybody please show/tell me a place to downgrade???

You can downgrade to Froyo using the Files here:

Stock Images | PvilleComp's

There are alo some How To's there for installing either by RUU or PB31IMG.

Once you are back to Foyo, Unrevoked will work. Just remember to load a Rooted Gingerbread, not a Stock Gingerbread when you upgrade.

Hope this helps.
