[GUIDE] How To Root/Unroot The Thunderbolt with Revolutionary

I used this link you provided someone else. I did not lose s-off, and it appears that su can not find su binary. I re dled su from the market, and I tried to update su and that is what it told me. I think its superuser not able to grant access because of the lost su binary?? Possible?

Thats strange that it put you on 605.3 ...I'll double check the link but it was taken straight from Android Police. It should have been 605.5.

You need to repeat step 10 from the guide to put SU back on the phone. You have the bootloader unlocked (s-off) but you lost your root access which is whats happening to everyone who is putting the RUU over a Revolutionary rooted phone.

10) Now you will still be at the bootloader screen...
Press Power to enter the recovery screen.
Push volume down to highlight recovery and push power once again to select it and boot into recovery.
Now you can use the recovery and install su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip to get root.

I'm re-downloading from the link you just posted. This should work over the Rev's root? Re-rooting is not a prob.

I was having problems with the recovery. I didn't want to try to do a fix, so I reverted all the way back to stock S-on and Android 2.2 latest release following the unroot process on the first post. Let the OTA update, and re rooted. Thought that was the best way for a new clean install. But thanks for trying to help Cyber.

Although the first post says unrooting through revolutionary is harder than others....I found it quite easy. Just take it slow.

Well I got it all done last night. I'm back on my rooted stock (now 605.5). My issue was at the boot screen, after it sees the PG05IMG file, and does it's check, I was using the down key not the up key. That terminated the new install and left me back where I started.

EvoGSR- I had the same screen once, but I just did a battery pull then when I turned it back on, I did a force into boot screen.

so I just flashed to BAMF 1.0.8 and have some questions.
1. How do I update to version 1.0.9? Do i leave the 1.0.8 on the SD card, place the patch on there too and update the same way?
2. Do I need to wipe everything again with the 1.0.9 patch?
3. Do i need to keep the 1.0.8 version on the root or once flashed can I delete it?
4. I performed a backup using MyBackup do i just do a restore now?

Thanks!

After installing BAMF 1.0.8 I cannot get 4GLTE conenction, just 3G. I installed the correct radio 0.01.78.0906 and it shows up under settings--baseband ... any idea what to do?

All you need to do is flash the 1.0.9 patch the same way as a rom... except do not wipe the data. Only wipe dalvik and cache partition. You will not lose anything. It doesn't matter if you have old zip files of different roms. You can leave them on the sd card or delete them when you are done.

For the radio... you need to flash one for CDMA (3G) and one for LTE. I'm guessing you only flashed one radio. Remove the pg05img that you used off of the sd card and download the LTE radio and flash it the same way as the first time.
There should be two radios (in sets) on the download page that you used. The LTE radio is right under the CDMA radio that you downloaded.

Kraussca,

I think I am in the same boat as you were (605.3 rooted with revolutionary.io). The latest OTA self-ran and I went into a reboot loop. I was able to recover with a restore from CWM. If I flash the newest RUU (605.5) do I understand correctly that the only thing I will loose is root? I assume that I can re-root at that point and restore my apps and data...? Thanks for your help in advance! This forum is great!

CW, Thanks! I got it working finally!

I did have some issues with the restore from MyBackupPro ... it didnt restore half of my apps so I just reinstalled them from Market. Do you think this is because I moved my apps from phone to SD card?

Yes, when I did it, I still had s-off but had to re-flash the su.zip file. I did loose all my stuff, but I had MBU and TI for recovery.

I don't know if you loose it when it happens from OTA.

I rooted tbolt for first time 2 days ago using revolutionary. Good tutorial.
My question is, today my phone was on and I went to use it, and there was a
window saying going to update in 26 seconds with no option to stop it, so I quickly powered the
phone off. Is it safe to turn back on ? Do I need to unroot to allow the update? This is all
pretty new to me. I have Titanium Backup installed but had not had a chance to back up yet.

I'm a newb about rooting, so I apologize if it's stupid of me to even ask...

Is rooting a phone a one time universal scenario, or will there be a need to unroot and reroot it again with something else? If I root my Thunderbolt now, will I need to eventually unroot it and reroot it again when ICS becomes available for it?

I'm a little unclear about unrooting. I rooted using the older auto root process, prior to Revolutionary. I now have to unroot for purposes of sending the phone back for an exchange. On Page 20 of this thread, it says to start at the second half and just download the two .zip files, then an OTA udpate. But in that same response, it states in the specific instructions...prior to the two .zip files..."After getting the bootloader back to the original s-off, engineering 1.04.2000 hboot download these 2 files:"

So what does that statement mean?

Its a one time thing unless you decide to use Verizons over the air (ota) updates or flash a leaked RUU which then you would need to unroot first and then reroot. There's no need to do that though if you are using custom ROMs. The developers will include the latest update in their ROMs in which you would only have to update the ROM... no unrooting required.

The Thunderbolt will not officially receive ICS... most likely you will see some custom ROMs built from ICS... so no need to unroot for that one.

If you rooted using Revolutionary and want to unroot... you need to start from the beginning of the unroot guide which involves using adb commands to unlock the bootloader.

If you rooted NOT using Revolutionary and want to unroot... you can skip the adb commands and jump to flashing the two zips which is what's on page 20.. it was copied and pasted from the unroot guide found on page 1. Its the same thing.
