[GUIDE] How To Root/Unroot The Thunderbolt with Revolutionary

I'm considering taking the plunge into rooting my TB...does it matter for using Revolutionary if I downgrade to 605.3 or 605.5? Also, will the RUU for either (assuming they both work) be able to be flashed in hboot the same way (with wipe ensuing)?

Shouldn't matter which ruu you flash. Just remember you will have to flash the newest radio once you get your root done, and rom flashed you choose. You will have to flash the RUU in hboot. Once you rename the zip to the PG05IMG.zip Hboot will go to flashing it once it scans the sdcard.

Sorry if this has been posted but I cant find the answer. I needed to unroot for warrenty. everything went fine and im s-on and back to stock but when I got my refurbed tbolt and went to the bootloader screen I noticed that it said locked in pink at the top. my broken phone says all the right numbers but doesnt say locked in pink at the top. should I worry about sending it back? It was a hardware issue. not sure if that matters

Not sure, might want to ask that question in a more public section so you get some more eyes on it. I would say if your bootloader says S-ON your good.

One more question: I know flashing the RUU (necessary to use this method) and wipe the phone...is there any way to back up things prior to this? I know once rooted there are options available for when I flash stuff AFTER I'm rooted...I have Astro and know it has a backup feature but I'm not sure if this is what I'm looking for or if there is another app out there that would meet my needs

Download MyBackup Pro from the market... it does the best job for unrooted devices. Once you have root... you can use Titanium Backup or MyBackup for Root Users... which you can then backup apps + app data.

I have tried every way to root my thunderbolt I have seen online and nothing works, I've brought it to people claiming to have rooted multiple Tbolts to no avail, What the is wrong? D;

Thanks CW...I appreciate all the help you give in the forums

I downgraded my thunderbolt from 605.9 to 605.5 and rooted it with Revolutionary and it worked great. But after 9 hours or so it shut down and came to a black screen with a blue droid figure beside a box with an arrow symbol coming out of it. Then below that a bar appears and begins to move across the screen but stops 1, 5th the way and disappears and the box with arrow is replaced with an exclamation point inside a triangle. it stays here and does nothing more so I pulled out the battery and put it back in and booted to the boot menu, from here I went to recovery and wiped data/reset factory default. after doing this the phone worked fine, but then after about 9 hours it did the same thing, blue droid figure and exclamation point. I would appreciate any help, thanks.

its trying to update again you need to use a custom rom to get it to stop

custom rom, or google stop verizon automatic updates if you wish to remain stock rooted. There are a few settings and a couple files you rename and you will be safe.

Hello can anybody help me I trying to root my phone and I got all the way up to step ten when I'm having trouble when it tell you to push down or up to highlight the recovery to install the su 2.3.6.3 effusion signed.zip file to the phone will its not letting me move down to highlight it

tried to follow the steps but I got this message after entering the beta key:

' Zerging Root... this might take
Press (almost) any key to exiT. "

I have it set to USB Debugging and have it on charge only. Any Ideas? I read through the first ten or so pages, but simply do not have the time to read all 49 pages.

Is there any way someone could modify the OP on this thread to indicate that you have to downgrade the OS before rooting? That would have saved me and a lot of others a lot of time. And, it would be nice so that if Revolutionary is ever updated to support the latest OS, that would be a way to find out.

Wife wants her phone rooted, but it's updated and I'm not interested in doing all that crap to downgrade first, unless Revolutionary doesn't plan on updating the rooting software.

Thought this worked on all versions? Least that was what i gathered within the first ten or so pages. Maybe that is why it is failing to get root.

What does one have to do to downgrade it? I am as new to this stuff as they come. :(

This is exactly what I'm talking about. Yeah, if you have the latest OS update from verizon, Revolutionary doesn't work for rooting and you'll get that "failed to get root" message. Took me a good half hour of trying to figure that out. Pretty annoying when this is a problem that many people know about already.

Search this thread, there are links to downgrading, but it requires a full wipe of the phone.

ell that sucks. Seems like the developers and never ahead of the curve. Everytime I get the courage to root and a newer easier method is available seems that there ia always another catch and I have missed the opurtunity. This gets annoying.

Does anyone know if revolution plans on doing an upgrade to fix this issue or should I plan on staying stock for another year?

Is there a way to downgrade without losing my data? that was the reason I was attempting to root it this time is cause there was no data loss with this method.

grr.

please dont worry about wiping. You will have to wipe it to load a ROM anyways. If you dont plan on loading a custom ROM please remember to follow the steps to remove the update files for VZW so you dont end up with the triangle thingy...
