[GUIDE] Nexus 7 - Factory Image Restore

something went wonky with my device when I was experimenting with unlocking/rooting earlier today. I've managed to get it stuck on the Google logo. I followed your instructions to a T but the problem remains. When I boot into stock recovery, I get a strange set of messages. Perhaps this may have to do with my bootloop? Seems like the cache is all wonky.

E:failed to mount /cache (No such file or directory)
E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/log
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/log
E:failed to mount /cache (No such file or directory)
E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/last_log
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/last_log
E:failed to mount /cache (No such file or directory)
E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/last_install
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/last_install
E:Can't open /dev/block/platform/sdhci-tegra.3/by-name/MSC
(No such file or directory)
E:failed to mount /cache (No such file or directory)"

I get pretty much the same errors when I soft flash CWMR, just in a slightly different order.

"E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/command
E:Can't open /dev/block/platform/sdhci-tegra.3/by-name/MSC
(No such file or directory)
E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/log
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/log
E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/last_log
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/last_log
E:Can't open /dev/block/platform/sdhci-tegra.3/by-name/MSC
(No such file or directory)"

EDIT: Upon further research, the cache errors are appearing because I haven't fully been able to boot my device. Could the "E:Can't open /dev/block/platform/sdhci-tegra.3/by-name/MSC" be the problem?

EDIT2: I just tried sideloading 2 different roms (image-nakasi-jwr66v & AOSP-4.3-JWR66V-grouper-rooted_Androguide) in CWMR. Got the same error as before both times.

">> INSTALLATION IN PROGRESS <<
E:Error in /tmp/update.zip
(Status 0)
Installation aborted
E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/log
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/log
E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/last_log
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/last_log
E:Can't open /dev/block/platform/sdhci-tegra.3/by-name/MSC

Hi, thank you for the nice guide.
I came here because the normal update by OTA made my N7 get stuck at the X. Now I tried several things to get the Factory Image on my device, no luck.
The last thing I tried was your guide, but now all is erased and no system runs, and recovery mode is also erased.
all attempts fail at the flashing of the radio file, and my device has the entry "baseband: N/A" where all seems to stop/fail during system update/flash.

any Ideas how to get this baseband problem fixed?

(I did never unlock the boot-loader or install a different image on this device. until now, all updates came OTA.)

Thank you for any new ideas,
I just don't like to send it back again for repair, as it would be the third time in two months now...

Are you using the 3G device or the wifi only one?

Also I'm pretty sure the bootloader needs to be unlocked for this...

hi 2defmouze,
thanks for your fast reply.

here the missing information:
- yes, the bootloader had to be unlocked for the steps you described, but before that I did not unlock it.
- I use the 3G Model.

the "baseband" error apears eaven if I try to use the "WiFi" image, which I tried after I used several times the "3G" image from Google.

any more ideas?

You cannot flash the wifi image to the 3g model.. Bad idea. Flash the radio from the 3g image first.. I thought I noted that in the instructions. Read carefully. Will check later when I'm at the computer in case I didn't.
Baseband=radio

hi,
what I did, after the preparation steps, was:

1.
fastboot erase boot
fastboot erase cache
fastboot erase recovery
fastboot erase system
fastboot erase userdata

2. fastboot flash bootloader....
-->OK
3. fastboot reboot-bootloader
-->OK
4. fastboot flash radio radio-tilapia....
--> this will not happen successfully, there is an error

fastboot flash radio radio-tilapia-1231_0.18.0_0409.img
sending 'radio' (16384 KB)...
OKAY [ 2.054s]
writing 'radio'...
FAILED (remote: (BadParameter))
finished. total time: 2.076s

5. fastboot -w update image-nakasig....
--> error Baseband N/a
---

I thought this was the right order of procedure.
I still have no idea how to flash the radio if it always stops with that error.

who cant do it try always typing fastboot-windows before any command you do. im on win8 and couldnt figure it out before

and when I boot into the bootloader there is no fast boot option. restart bootloader, recovery mode, power off and start are the only options I see

Just a heads up, not sure if it was already covered, but i found on my system that the files won't transfer properly over adb if your connection is USB 3.0

A very big Thank You to 2defmouze and dmmarck for this excellent tutorial. Made a full recovery from the mess I made trying to install CM10. Think I'll stay with stock Nexus 7 for awhile.

My 2013 N7 was bricked after the latest update. Before I did anything, it would go into fastboot, or stay on the nexus screen, but that's it. I managed to get through all the steps right up to flashing the actual factory image, which is where I get an error. It just says "failed to load: no error."

Any suggestions?

*****Ok, ignore below, i left it for about an hour and came back and it had flashed 4.2.2 successfully and is now getting the 4.3 update via OTA*****

I've been having an issue restoring stock on my 1st gen N7 Wifi as well.

I was using Wugs toolkit to reflash stock and unroot and it errored out due to bootloader version (mine is 4.18) so i tried manually and i get this error

Code:
sending 'bootloader' (2100 KB).
OKAY [ 2.212s]
writing 'bootloader'...
FAILED (remote: (InvalidState))
finished. total time: 2.355s

SO after this I tried flashing factory 4.2.2 since that is what the rom i was using was based off and everything goes fine and then it just hangs on sending the system files.

I have tried multiple full wipes and reflashing it all manually now but it always hangs on sending system files.

I can get into fastboot and that is all, can't even get into recovery.
I have also made sure Im not using USB 3.0.

and heres the log from trying to flash 4.2.2

Code:
c:\FLASH>fastboot -w update image-nakasi-jdq39.zip
archive does not contain 'boot.sig'
archive does not contain 'recovery.sig'
archive does not contain 'system.sig'

Worked a treat,....OMG, thanks guys,...thought I'd bricked my N7!
Had to manually reboot into bootloader rather than use dos command after going into platform tools, then flashed the image.
I'm an absolute novice, and followed and watched the guide step by step.
great work!!
