[Guide] Rebooting into Recovery Mode for the Galaxy S2, S3, and Tab2.

I did the method step by step because after a factory rest it won't go past the AT&T screen. It still doesn't after what your guide tells me to. Boot loop fix haha smh

You may need to reload the firmware to get past the boot issue. If you take the battery out and reinsert it, does the phone turn itself on (without you pressing the Power button)? If so it's likely that the Power button (the plastic piece that you press on) is stuck or the actual Power switch on the mainboard is malfunctioning.

Simple exit to downloading option

Hello,:)

First of all many thanks to all posters and Golfdriver97 for helping out people.
As a curious newbie I went into downloading mode in my samsung Galaxy S3 by pressing Vol down+center Home+power button. After that I got options to press Vol up key to continue and Vol down key to cancel. Out of sheer curiosity and thinking I can exit anytime I pressed Vol down and the very infamous "downloading do not turn off" screen sits with the green andriod logo.

All this was done without any cable attachment to computer since I dont want to root or reflash my rom. I just was curious as to what happens next. Now the screen just waited for odin to connect, however I did not since after connecting I am unsure if there is no direct exit option from odin without flashing rom and not doing anything (simple exit from odin and no rooting and no flashing and nothing happens).

Next tried to go into recovery mode and tried all permutations combinations of keys to exit this "downloading" mode but I failed. The power naturally went down as I was reading through many help articles and I put in another battery and now the phone doesnt turn on at all now, no reaction and does not go into recovery mode either. Now I am in a soup as I want my photos and message to be recovered (no external SD storage used) :(

I wished to know:
1) If my phone waits on "downloading dont turn off target screen", then how do I simply exit this mode? Should I connect to odin (highly risky) and exit ? (dont know what happens). Does connecting to odin necessarily mean that I have to flash my ROM ?

2) If I do manage to go into recovery mode, then selecting option "reboot system now" will simply reboot my system and phone will work?

3) If this does not work then does recovery mode option, "wipe cache partition" delete all user photos and messages ?. (I am absolutely sure factory reset option does delete all user data)

Thanks for help.

The only way I know how to exit the download mode (when not flashing anything to the device) is to either pull the battery or long press the power button (which simulates a battery pull).

Yes.

No. Wiping the cache deletes system related files. You user data should not be wiped during the process.

Re: Simple exit to downloading option

what I did was take the device to support center and they told that IC power chip needs to
be changed and was charged about 27$ or so. No data was deleted at all. I am still wondering how did the power chip went bad.

Thanks to everyone who helped and especially Golfdriver97 who has helped many people on this earth.

The battery may be going bad. Have you checked with a different one?

This is your guide as to how to reboot into Recovery. I have noticed many users do not know how to do this, so I figured I would write a step by step guide with photos on how to do it.

I will be using my Tab 2 as a demonstration unit, and for screen shots as visual aids.

[TIP]Rebooting into recovery or even knowing how to use it can be very helpful. Being stuck in a boot loop, apps crashing, or just a general clearing of problems can be fixed using this method.[/TIP]

Step 1: Power down the device. Pulling the battery will work as well, especially if you are caught in a boot loop.

Step 2: Allow the device to completely shut down. Waiting until your screen is off, or just giving it a full minute or two should suffice.

Step 3a: For the Galaxy S2 and Tab 2, you will need to hold Volume Up and Power at the same time until you see the Samsung logo appear. Then release.

3b: For the Galaxy S3, you will need to hold the volume up, home, and power button at the same time until you see the Samsung logo, and then release.

Step 4: For all variants mentioned, you should now be looking at a menu list with a blue highlighted bar. Using the volume rockers will navigate through the menus, and generally power is your accept button. The S2 might have a little twist. Upon getting into recovery, you can push up, down, up to enable the back button. This also allows to use the power button as the accept button. See figure 1.

Important note: When navigating around in recovery and you select something, you may be redirected to a page with about a dozen answers. Almost all will be no with yes buried in the middle. This is to prevent accidental accepting of an option.

4b: To actually have you use this guide, you can clear your phone's cache. See figure 2. There are many cache clearing programs on Play, and while they may clear the cache as well as rebooting into recovery, this is merely an alternate method. Click power to accept.

Step 5: When completed, you can navigate back, or usually after completing any action in Recovery, Reboot Now will be highlighted at the root menu. See figure 3. This is your gate back to running Android through the User Interface. Click power to accept.

Congratulations! You have successfully entered, navigated, executed a command and rebooted all in Recovery. This is also a method to flash a ROM through a .zip file on an SD card, and a complete Factory Reset can be accomplished in this manner as well.

Hi, I have an AT&T Samsung Galaxy S3 I received from a friend when she upgraded her phone. I have followed your instructions and rebooted into recovery mode, cleared cache and set to factory settings, but when I reboot it still gets stuck on the AT&T symbol. I have powered down, took the battery out for a few minutes and started all over but nothing changrs. Do I just need to be patient or is there something else I need to do?

Thanks.

Sorry for the delay. Clearing the cache should take no longer than a standard reboot. What was the reason for doing it to begin with?

I shattered my galaxy and my friend just upgraded so she gave me her old one. When she gave it to me she did a factory reset on it but when I tried to turn it on afterwards it would freeze on the AT&T screen. I found this forum and decided to try what you had said but it still freezes on that page.

Are you on AT&T as well?

Welcome to the forums!
I've seen one poster that said he was successful by just rebooting the phone ten to twenty times and that if finally booted correctly.

My usual recommendation is to reload the stock firmware using either the Kies software or a tool called Odin. If you'd like to try Kies (you'll probably need v3) here's an overview:
- if you don't already have the Kies software installed on your PC, download it (just search Google) and install it. The first time it runs it'll update itself to the latest version so make sure you run it once before proceeding.
- put your phone in Download mode: with the phone completely off, press and hold the Volume Down and Home and Power buttons simultaneously, and release them all when you see the Samsung splash screen
- connect the phone to your PC with the USB cable that came with the phone
-- if you've never had the phone connected to your Windows-based computer before, you'll see messages about installing drivers, etc - just wait until this is done (may take 5 or 10 minutes) [I don't know what happens if you have a Mac - it probably just works]
- in the Kies software, select the second item in the Tools menu and just follow the prompts to enter the model number (in CAPS) and IMEI/Serial Number (both found under the battery - it's ok to remove the battery at this point)
- the Kies software should start downloading the correct firmware for your phone from the Internet; once that's done (depending on your Internet connection speed) it'll begin downloading that to the phone (this probably takes 10 minutes or so)

When i try to clear my cache like you suggested I get a totally different screen on my Tab 2 It says worning!! a custom OS can causecritical problems in phone and installed applications.

If you want to download a custom OS, press the volume down key. Otherwise, press the volume up key to cancel.

Hello, I have followed the guidlines you have written down and my phone still seems to be stuck on that samsung logo screen. I am using a S3 and I have cleared the cache and rebooted my phone. Yet it still not working. HELP PLEASE

Hello. The only other thing I can suggest is a reset. Have you tried that?
