[GUIDE] Rooting 3.7/Hboot2.02+ w/screen shots (1/27/2011)

Thefredelement,
Just wanted to say thanks for the guide. I'm glad I did it the long way and actually saw the commands. I ran into a few hiccups, but was able to figure them out.

Just one more question, I wanted to do some housekeeping and get rid of the files I don't need anymore. Which files can now be safely removed now that I'm rooted and running the Sprint lovers Rom?

I am a new to rooting phones. I plan on getting the HTC EVO 4g this weekend (my phone got crushed). I would like to keep a relatively stock phone, but I am needing the wifi hotspot--I cannot see paying 29 a month for it.

Is this the method that I need to follow or do i need to start with a different step before this?

I am a little confused, because the more i look around I continue to find different methods and starting points. I want to root, but it has me a bit nervous as i know i can screw things up if i miss a step.

Since it is a new phone...do I still need to backup what it has on it or does the unroot method take care of that for me. Just in case I need to return the phone for something.

Thanks for any help.

You can really remove everything, even the files on your sdcard (just make sure you have a good nandroid!)

Welcome to Android Central!

Yes this is the guide you will follow for a new Evo.

You need to always backup your 4G keys, at least once, just as insurance. Most people will never need this but it's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it :).

Oops. Already back on 1.71 and about to flash 3.26.

Yeah, I read liquidjesus' guide to rooting the older versions, but I didn't understand why I needed to go back to Eclair like he says his method does. And the method you based this guide off was supposed to work for all versions, right? Frankly, I don't see anything difficult about this method...it's just not working.

The reason to go back to Eclair is to get the engineering software on there so you can push the files over, originally (before the bootloader was locked) the engineering S-OFF hboot was installed when the misc partition was flashed with old version information. On 3.26 though you can downgrade and get s-off the old fashion way if you'd like.

All that being said, I'm really curious as to why this isn't working for you.

Thanks for the explanation! I think I may have found my problem, but I won't try again until Fri evening.

Was the first nandroid backup we did in the instructions of the stock rom or the sprintlovers rom? I'm guessing it was the stock rom, and if I was to to do another nandroid backup now it would be of the sprintlovers rom which I am running right now.

Thanks again

There are no nandroids in the instructions, - there's the 4G key backup though. Either way, if you like sprint lovers you should for sure create a backup for yourself just in case you run in to problems you'll be able to get back to business.

Thanks for the clarification. I thought since the RSA-PR-BACKUP was in the nandroid folder it was a nandroid backup. So I guess I don't have any nandroid backups yet.

There's no time like the present for a nandroid and you can easily set it up in ROM Manager.

Amon RA was included in the sprintlovers package, so I have a recovery system. I downloaded myn's warm 2.2 and the radio/wimax zip files to the root of the sd card (going to try that rom first). I powered down my phone then pressed power and vol- at the same time. I selected recovery then nandroid backup.

Now it is asking me what I want to backup: boot, system, data, and cache are all selected. These are not selected: recovery, wimax, sd-ext, and .android_secure. Do I need to check any of these before I select Perform Backup or is the backup good to go?

You might as well :) you already have your wimax backed up but it's only like 12MB so i don't think it's a big deal to do it again, sd-ext and android_secure are good to backup for the market and any apps that store some data on your sdcard.

SUCCESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here was my problem:

Since I decided to quit my rooting efforts for now, I was going to uninstall the files that came with the rooting zip from my laptop. Now, I had extracted the zip file to two locations on my laptop -- my desktop, and the root of my c drive. But that wasn't the problem.

I went to delete the unzipped files from my c drive first. I found one...two...three...four...five files. FIVE?! There were SIX on my desktop! Sure enough, I'd been working from the c drive the last two nights, and the file that for some reason didn't get extracted there was the RECOVERY folder. So of course I was getting stuck at the red triangle...I had no RECOVERY folder to push!

Tonight, I opened a cmd prompt on my desktop and worked with the files I had there, and that made all the difference.

One thing I would add to the tutorial is that you might have to attempt the three commands at the red triangle (step 15) several times each until you get "daemon started successfully." I had to (especially the first one), but they finally worked.

Also, at the beginning, maybe highlight what should have been the obvious: MAKE SURE ALL THE FILES IN THE ZIP FILE ACTUALLY GET EXTRACTED!

is there a guide somewhere on how to use z4root and titanium back up before you start trying to root?

i downloaded z4root 1.3, did the temp root, installed the titanium back up root (do i need to buy titanium back up before i can use the root version?) and i got an error message saying that my phone wasn't rooted.. did i do something wrong? perhaps someone can give me a quick step by step on how to do this?

thanks all
