[GUIDE] Using chkdsk to fix a corrupted SD card

It is not available for SD cards formatted in RAW unfortunately :-\
To change the format you'd have to reset the card so it's not of much use if you're trying to recover something from it.

Thankyou so much..it works :) hats off to you ...thankyou
Glad it worked :D

Great! I've had it work on the first try every time but glad to see it worked for you on the second run :)

Thank You so much for this help. I had 2500 pictures on an sd card that I thought was lost forever since 6 months ago. tried using ZAR free, but no deal. Then tried the simple steps you said and BINGO. Now I have my photos imported to my computer. Even have my stored waypoints from my offline gps that I used during hunting season. Just in time for hunting season. Thank you again so much. I know where I will look FIRST next time I need help.

Are you using any backup services for your photos now? Dropbox and Google have a good bit of free storage for your photos and videos.

chkdsk does not work for files that are in the .raw format unfortunately. You'd have to reformat your drive in order to use a different file format.

I'm not sure if Recuva works for RAW, but that is good recovery program you can try as well.

When I try this method, it tells me that chkdsk doesn't wotk fro RAW files. What does that mean?

Read the post above this one :)

i tried following the steps but when i put my letter in on the cmd and press enter it says cannot open volume for complete access.

How do I begin this process using Windows 8?

I was able to do this by doing the following:
From the desktop view in Windows 8, right click on the windows icon in the bottom left corner. Then click on Command Prompt (admin). Then proceed to type chkdsk F:/f. It worked to retrieve most of the photos, but not all. It also did not retrieve any videos.

I had the same problem and followed the given steps.
but after "windows is verifying files and folders"
it shows location of two files, possibly the corrupt ones and says allocation unit is not valid.
then says "The entry will be truncated."
this happens to my 8gb card
but i also have a 4gb card with the same problem but when i do this on the 4 gb card it says there is no problem even though i cant delete any files from it.

There are some "Fake" SD card being sold out there in the market place. Some tooting being larger than they really are and give people all kinds of fits. Could it be that the issues the readers encounter are from sub standard cards? That would explain a lot of why some work and some do not with chkdsk.

Sent from my XP computer... the old and the Great!

I can't post links yet (not enough posts) but SanDisk and Samsung have pages about that. Dod a google search. Common is that they corrupt files.
