[GUIDE] Using chkdsk to fix a corrupted SD card

I have tried the steps and it seems that it could work but then I get the error "The root volume is full. To perform a disk check, Windows requires space in the root folder. Remove some files from this folder, then run disk check again." Please help! I haven't been able to find how this can be accomplished on a card that is corrupted and cannot be opened. The card was not full when it became corrupted or anywhere close. The computer also said it was not full at first.
The SD card doesn't have to be completely full. Just the root partition is full, which is why it's giving you that error. I'm not sure how to resize it, so I'd suggest using another recovery program to see if those can access the card. Try Recuva or DiskDigger

Thanks so much for this guide. It has given me a bunch of things to try, but I think my issue is a little different from what I am seeing here. The ChkDsk says 0 Percent Completed then gives me the prompt again and does nothing.
The phone won't see the card anymore, so I have it in my card reader on my computer. When I first put the card in, I can see all the folders and files but once I try to navigate through the folders or copy a file, it tries for a while then gives me an error. Usually it says "Please insert a disk into drive v:". Because the card basically disappears, none of the other programs I have tried (Recuva, etc) have worked either.
I am desperate to get this working. I changed jobs a while ago and switched google accounts and never bothered to set up the picture backup to Google + on my new google account. So I have a lot of pictures of my kids on that card I would really like to save.
Thanks for any help you all can provide!
Unfortunately, if the SD card is not being read by your computer, you won't be able to access it with CHKDSK or any other file recovery program. If that's the case, it might be beyond repair with "consumer grade" tools like the ones recommended here. Sorry it didn't work for you :(

Oh. If it's in the RAW format, CHKDSK won't work at all. But you can format it in My Computer > Right click Drive (Whatever your SD card is) > Format > File System. Then change it to FAT32 or NTFS

Umm i instert it says the card is empty and sth else u have screenshots of that and then it finishes looks like it successful but then i go to option-storage no sign of sd card mount sd card is unclickable its like card never existed in the first place.I did find a 1gb sd card it works 100%...i guess i ll just throw this one away tnx for help guys i think there is no help tho xD

Alright. Sorry we weren't able to help with your other card

Years of software and hardware troubleshooting have taught me that if something you're doing isn't working, there's no point in trying it over and over.

Unless you're running CHKDSK, apparently, because I was able to fix my corrupted 32GB SD card by running it ~5 times. Each time it found more things to correct, and after the 3rd time it let me explore the contents on my PC. Did a quick backup and ran it again to see if it would come back clean, and it found more things to fix and actually "broke" again. Ran it for the 5th time and it made another correction and all my folders came back. 6th time I ran it and there were no errors found.

From there I was able to back it up, format it, and repartition using DISKPART because my corruption messed up my partitions and formatted the only available volume to 8GB. Can't believe this worked but so happy I was able to recover EVERYTHING!

Awesome! Glad it worked for you :D

Hi, I was just wondering if you could help. I need to pull files off off a 32gb sd card wthout formatting and loosing files. I.e. pictures of my daughter and a recording of her heartbeat in the womb. I've tried repeatedly to do this disk check thing a me bob, exactly as it says to, but it does nothing, then freezes CMD so I canny type anything and have to re-open it. I'm not having a dig, it's probably either me or the flippin laptop and easily solvable. Any help would be appreciated. Pretty sure I'm using Windows 7. Thanks guys. :'(

Please Someone help me with my SD Card

I have an 8 GB micro sd Card of Class 10 and HTC Inspire 4G. Before current problem, I was having another problem with my sd card. My phone used to show "SD Card Unexpectedly Removed" error and it mounts it again when I remove sd card and reinsert it. Now I am having a huge problem. When I put my sd card in card reader and connect to my PC, it shows for some seconds and then looks like it unmount. But a blur icon of sd card is shown in This PC (My Computer). See the pictures below:

1. When I connect my card reader, it loads for some time then SD Card is opened in Windows Explorer:

2.png

2. After some time (2 - 5 seconds), it closes and this error is shown when ever I try to open it:

and the last thing, when I tried to check error by chkdsk command in Command Prompt, it shows "Cannot open volume for direct access"

I don't want to format it because I have important data in it :-\
