Headphones not playing notifications

When I am wearing headphones with my Razr Maxx the notification sounds don't play through the headphones. Instead they play through the phone speaker.
This is driving me insane because I am usually listening to music while using the exertime app to work through the couch to 5k program. So if a timer transition occurs in the silent gap between songs I don't always hear it with the phone in my pocket. I can't find any settings to change this. Please help.

try using a different music app? are you using the stock music player?

Yes I am having this trouble too. It is a Motorola problem not the app., I think. I have tried numerous apps with no resolution. What brand are your headphones?
