Help !! Galaxy S3 Freezing every few minutes. unresponsive.

Kies told me my firmware was up to date too but it became clear to me that there are other versions which are effectively the same (just more stable!) and yesterday I took the plunge and moved from XXELLA to XXEMB5 - I've been freeze-free since! :)

My S3 is locked to o2 (I tried a "3" SIM and it didn't work) and is a stock model - the process still worked fine even though the guide says make sure your phone is unlocked.

This is the step by step guide I used as I'm a relative noob to this too - Galaxy S3 I9300 Gets Official Android 4.1.2 XXEMB5 Jelly Bean Firmware [How to Install] - IBTimes UK

The link to the main file needed didn't work, so I just googled "download I9300XXEMB5" and found it very quickly.

Good luck!

Well I'm using I9300XXELKB, and no other updates are currently available. But the freezes didn't start after this ROM update, which dates back to January.
I was rather thinking of non-Samsung ROMs.

Hi siany65 - check out the reply I just posted to Francois' post, hopefully that will fix your problem and should be simple to do (must be if I could do it! Haha)

Good luck!

Hi - I know this will be annoying for some but I am not a techie and really don't understand even what ROM is - and my phone is doing exactly the same. If anyone can help me in laymans terms that would be fab! THanks :-)

I read all i found in forums about samsung galaxy s3 freezes. I think it was this may have worked for me:

S3 has this set up that if you long press the buttom on front bottom it lists all the screens you have opened (task manager?) As long as they are still on there, it will keep reopening the apps after killing them with Task Killer. I had previously downloaded a Battery Saver and the android task mgr pro and set it up to auto kill. It was freezing up the program i was using requiring a battery removal.

So i dumped the battery saver app first and Task killer i was using.
Then i loaded Advanced App Killer instead. It helps to make an Ignore List, the system required apps that need to run for you or let you pick the ones you need to "ignore". I let it list them and added on apps that i would be on longer periods: facebook; music players, etc. I think it was trying to close what i was working on trying to set up my new phone, jamming it up.

I only cleared the Touchwiz once. Had to reset all my screens! Not wanting to do that again, I went ahead and got some space on Verizon Back up Assistant cos i think it may back my screens layouts too. I set the replacement Task Mgr app up to close apps at start up, after shutting it off and every so often. BUT, THE SECRET IS THAT YOU HAVE TO "REMOVE" THE OPEN APPS LISTED FROM THE LONG PRESS OF FRONT SCREEN BUTTON OR IT KEEPS REOPENING THEM AFTER THE TASK KILLER CLOSES THEM...EATING UP THE BATTERY!

Hi Lynne.

I'm glad that worked for you but I don't think it will work for everyone - for example I already knew about the task manager and despite clearing it regularly (and using a RAM boost app etc) the freezing only stopped when I changed my firmware, and I've not needed ram boost, app killers or even to clear task manager since - it now works normally without those compromises or workarounds! :)

Things "progressed" on my side: the phone entered a reboot loop in the middle of the night, with reboot jingles cycling every ten seconds... I had to remove the battery, and I could not restart my phone since (when pressing volume up + start + power on reboot, the bugroid usually appearing before the admin menu appears just a split second, before it reboots again...)
I called Samsung, I'll leave the phone to one of their technical centers on Monday, hoping to retrieve a working phone afterwards... I'll keep you informed ^^

i read somewhere that official EMC2 released few days ago has resolved the freezing issue ... anyone tried this ? please share feedback ...

Hi deep_s3,
I have updated to EMC2 too, no freezes or lags since upgrade for 11 days!

Thank you. Works for me! Almost wanted to get rid of my S3, getting grazy by freezing every 3 minutes. After this update it is as fast as it was when I bought it 6 months ago.:D

got my phone back from the service center today and checked my baseband version and its I9300DDEMB1 .... not able to find anything about this version .... i have installed all the apps ... will share the feedback ...

Lightnshade- you are an absolute star, I could kiss you! I wouldn't have had the first clue on what to google, etc. My phone is now back up and running as good as it was over a month ago!

FYI, got the phone back the 2nd time from Samsung repair in Germany. Looks like they replaced motherboard or chips or something. I no longer have a SDS chip in my phone.

Works fine for about a week now.

What is SDS chip?

Just got an update for my SIII International Version (I9300). Baseband Version is now I9300DDEMB1. Cannot find the changelog anywhere!

Does anyone know what has changed in this update? My phone did have the freezing and random restart issue till now. Will have to see if the new update resolved the issue.

Hi,there
this is adie here from ausrtralia now i am having the same problem it started a week ago...and the phone is 7 months.. I took my phone to samsung they said it seems like it is water damaged (becoz of the the sticker inside ) but as far as i know it is not.
How would i know exactly if it is a water damaged.

Okay I have the solution, this is to leave the phone until it unfreeze itself DO NOT POWER OFF, OR REMOVE THE BATERY after the phone unfreeze it self the phone will register that it has crashed and it will create a dummy file to prevent this same freezing occurs in the future is as simply as that, is caused because the memory was overloaded and when it reached to a part of your memory that it might be damage it freezes.
(Sorry for my english)

Eugenio I did that and it worked for a week or so but its starting its crap again. Samsung support say its a software issue which is clearly nonsense

Hi Everyone,
I had the freezing issue for a long time.
I updated the firmware to EMC2 and the phone hasn't frozen once since the update.
The uptime is 402h( 17 days ) which is awesome compared to the phone freezing every 5 mins!

hope everyone has the similar experience with EMC2 firmware.

Vodaphone released the EMB1 update last night which everyone on Whirlpool says fixes the problem. Now waiting for Optus to wake up and send it out.
