HELP! Installed Handcent. Still at 100%

Hi,

Recently, I bought a Sprint HTC Hero. I've read these forums and I know that the default messaging app has a bad tendency to lock the system awake. So I:
  1. Disabled the notifications in the default messaging app
  2. Installed Handcent SMS
  3. Disabled the Popup in handcent
  4. Rebooted and stopped using the default messaging app
But I'm still seeing 100% awake. Are there other things that this newbie hasn't yet found that can lock the system into awake mode?

I'm finding that my phone is running out of charge at 3pm. Granted that this is under somewhat heavy usage considering that I've just got a new toy. But I think it's also (in large part) a result of 100% awake time, and I'd like to see if I can get that down to much more reasonable levels.

Suggestions?
Thanks.

I had to hard reset my phone and then do all those steps to get it to work. MyBackUp is a great app (free 30 day trial) for backing up the majority of your phone before you hard reset.

Did you also disable auto retrieve in the native messages app?
Yes I did. A hard reset appears to have fixed it. I'm also being very careful about which apps I install from the Market. Installing them one at a time to see if it has any impact.

How do you find the "awake time" percentage on the Hero? I keep reading people talking about it but I have no idea how to locate it.

third-party IM applications will cause the device to not sleep. There is no resolution to this because IM apps are an always-on proposition.

@gm46 - Menu > Settings >About Phone > Status and scroll to the bottom.

@themyst - it's not the 3rd party apps causing the problem, it's the native messaging app that is causing the dialer to open and the phone not going to sleep.

I've noticed that the vizBattery widget doesn't allow the phone to sleep.

I did a hard reset and slowly added apps and widgets to see what caused what and when the vizBattery widget was on a homescreen, it caused the battery to never sleep.
:(

This is getting to be a problem if we're going to have to check each and every app to see what it does to the sleep system.

Hopefully 2.0 will take care of this, and again, hopefully, it'll be out soon...like a few weeks soon.

I've noticed that, despite the fact that I never use it, the Messages app seems to start up entirely on it's own. How do I keep it from starting up? I'm using TasKiller to see if it's starting up, and then using that to kill it. Also use TasKiller to kill itself after I'm done killing messages. (Referring, of course, to the thread suggesting that task killers are also part of the problem.)

In any case my question is this: Is it possible to keep Messages from starting?

I just checked my hero and it shows Uptime: 239 hours and Awake Time: 188 hours. That is about 78% of the time. That sounds really high.

What are you guys getting now that you did the messaging fix?

Like I said, the Messages app is mysteriously starting on me. So, despite applying the messaging fix, I'm still getting poor awake %.

First thing you should do is stop running a task killer. Android does a great job of handling its own resources, and it wont kill any critical processes etc. My phone currently is 48 hours up time, 6:11 mins awake time which is good for 13%.

I feel like I'm necroposting here but I'm having this problem. I've got Handcent and my up time is still at 100%. The only apps I have downloaded aside from Handcent is Sound Grenade and Facebook.

When I downloaded Handcent I turned off notifications and auto-retrieve. Then I restarted the phone and it's still giving me 100%.
