As Jessica stated that's the LG recovery so that is giong to be the main thing keeping you from flashing roms.

To see if the phone itself is rooted (regardless of recovery), you could do one of two things.
1) Connect the phone to your computer in USB debugging and run an adb shell
2) Install a terminal emulator and open it

when your shell or emulator loads it will show you one of two prompts; either '$' or '#'. '$' is a standard bash or non-root prompt, if you see this try typing in su and hitting enter, if it gives you a # you have root, otherwise it will give you a fail.

If you in fact determine you do not have root, I would recommend checking out Gingersnap

If you determine you do have root you will want to proceed to install custom recovery, you can try the link included by Jessica, or you may also want to check out the sticky guide on recovery, roms, etc

Hope that helps get you on track if you have any issues with the above I'm off work today, feel free to hit me up on Gtalk if you need a little help, it's the same username.

My friend has an Optimus S and needs to go back to stock to restore data services. She and my wife upgraded using the OTA which as you all know kills root. I went back and was able to downgrade back to the older software using the LG update tool. Both are having data issues and for some reason I am not able to update the PRL or the data profile....I need to know what to do and also is there a Rom that will let you do all of this???

P.S. I use an Evo and as long as I was running Sense I was able to update everything sprint related....PRL. data profile and all of that.

Why do you need to go back to stock to restore data services? Why did you go to older software via LG Updater? Was there a reason you didn't use Gingerbreak/snap? Did you reroot? Do you still have a custom recovery? You really need to know the state of the phones to know the best route. Very confusing in terms of what you are trying to accomplish.

I had to roll back because the gingersnap method wasn't even discovered yet. They just now started having problems so i downloaded the OTA update again and rooted within the method above. Worked like a charm. I then flashed a custom recovery and am using thunderom. So far it works a lot better than stock. But one of the phones still doesn't have data.

Makes more sense now. Did both phones have data after the OTA update?

Try doing a profile update?

I tried that. I have to have Data to update the PRL and the Data Profile. One phone has data the other does not. But when I try to update either one I get an authentication error unable to communicate with DM (48) manager

Well, apparently the OTA updates did not work correctly for either phone. May mean something is wrong with your handsets, but with both being a problem that seems unlikely.

If I were in your shoes, I guess I would seriously consider force flashing VD (or possibly an older version of the firmware) using the kp500 force flash method. Then check data by updating prl/profile before doing anything else. If all goes well there, you should still have a custom recovery and there is an easy way to get your phone rooted without actually rooting; just flash a rooted rom (e.g. TR 1.8.x) and that will install the necessary files.

If you do not get data on force flashing to VD or earlier, guess it's time to take it back to Sprint or send it back to LG after restoring the stock recovery.

Please let us know how you proceed and what the results are.

which method would be best to root my phone?
I know many may disagree, but I think the best is the manual gingerbreak method using adb commands. Maybe a bit harder, but will pay off in the long run with other things that will come up sooner or later.
