Help please - Before I smash this phone with a hammer - Calendar wont work !

You're a nasty piece of work "planoman"

I have repeatedly thanked people through this thread for their help.

You have not read the thread properly.

All I have wanted to find out is why MY calendar is not working on MY phone that I have just bought for ?300 PERIOD.

Through the help of Treknologist we have ascertained that it is because although I have a google account that I acquired by accident from signing up to a youtube account with my own email I am not allowed to use the calendar on MY phone that I paid $400 for unless I sign up for a new google Gmail .

That is when my rant started and I'm quite justified to do so.

I stand corrected, you did thank some people along the way. Right before you called us all "brainwashed disciples of google". You did however resist the simplest advice while acting like you really wanted it to work. It is not rocket science, but when you withhold the fact that you think google is satans spawn, it makes it a little hard to use google calendar in an android phone.

Why do you think so many people were perplexed as to why you could not get this simple thing to work?

Anyways good luck with your Nexus 4...

Let me see if I understand. If somebody wants to use the Google calendar app, they need to have a GMail account. Signing up for a GMail account is free. If somebody is unwilling to sign up for the account, they can't use Google's calendar, but are allowed to download or sideload a different calendar app that's more to their liking. Another option, if they're a programmer, is roll their own minimalist calendar in less than an hour.

Does that sound about right?

I think it is a perfectly understandable complaint. If you would rather pay twice as much for a phone, and pay twice as much for apps, and pay twice as much for a cell plan that you are locked into, than create a free throw away email address, that is definitely your choice. ( that sounds more condescending than I intended sorry).I guess my confusion is, why did you purchase an android phone in the first place? Were you unaware of the need to have an account to use it to it's full capacity? It is not something limited to the N4, you would have this issue with any android device.
All the operating systems have some sort of catch, android has the set up an account catch, Apple and Microsoft have the you must pay and pay and pay catch. (Microsoft also has the you must sign in with an account, they just don't require it to be hotmail). It all depends on what you would prefer to do. Just because most of us don't have an issue with gmail, doesn't mean we all feel the same. But maybe more research before a purchase would be prudent.

If you have found a solution that works for you, then I say well done.

ps. Oh yeah - your patronising half arsed comment at my request was no attempt to help me - you were just trying to put me down.

You better hope our paths never cross again !

Even Apple requires an Apple ID to be created and setup to work on their iPhone.
Having an account is required and gmail account is what Android phone needs. (you may not use that account for email purposes..but an account is needed)
glad you figured it out now.

Not only that, but the phone itself if called the "Google Nexus 4". IT is a Google phone plain and simple. Complaining that you hate that you need Google for it to work is fairly pointless.

That said, no one is forcing you to use anything Google - just install your own calendar app. But just a word of advice - Google phones are set up stock for people who like to use Google. You can always hack away at it to your heart's content to use anything else you want - Hell, install Ubuntu if you want.

Ok - Here is some info that I thought I should share for the community

I set up a gmail account with a calendar -just to get the calendar working - with the intention of, once it was working, to disable the sync and sever the link with google knowing all my life's activities.
I got the calendar working alright,
But when I disabled the sync ....
I'm not allowed to use the f'ing calendar
NOW - If that's not 'big brother is watching you' tell me what is. [ that's rhetorical by the way ;)]

Imagine - if you will - you buy a calendar from a shop - but every time you want to add something to it - you have to go back to the shop and ask them permission to do so
so they know what you're doing at any time.
Wouldn't you object ?
Wouldn't you think that could be a security risk ?

Q.E.D. :eek::-$:-$:'( ;)

Simply put, the calendar is cloud driven - so it requires sync to function. Just use a calendar app that is hosted on your phone locally only.

I understand many folks have an issue with the whole cloud concept - but it is central to everything Google does. It was unfortunate you chose Google before realizing this.

A calendar is required to run constantly, even when the phone is off !!!
Battery life is a massive problem with smart phones so I would not consider having 2 resource hungry apps doing the same thing.
We all need the max battery life possible - you just might need it in an emergency

I suggested jorte a while back on this thread. I know you said you didn't want an extra calendar running, but if jorte does not require a gmail sync, you could disable the stock ccalendar. Now that you have a gmail account, you could download jorte for free from the playstore!

Why don't try out Jorte or one of the other free calendars on the PlayStore to test how much of a hit the battery takes? It may not be too big of a hit if the calendar is not doing cloud sync. You should be able to check how much battery the app utilizes while running in the background using the battery app in settings.

The amount of battery juice required to keep your calendar in sync would be measured in minutes, not hours.

Your fighting an uphill battle going against Google with the phone you chose. It would be like buying a Mac computer and then getting mad because every program you want to run is a Windows platform app. Your going to find the greatest functionally in your phone by embracing Google. If that's not what you want, you could easily sell the device on ebay and get a new device with a different OS, and a calendar that does not require Gmail.

That depends. Did I buy a hard copy calendar or an application/service?

If I complained about iTunes requiring my password, and compared that to buying a CD and having to ask permission from the music store, I would sound pretty silly.

Treknologist - After changing all the various sync settings in different places and deleting the gmail from the email list in settings - now when I go into calendar settings, even though the box is ticked saying it's sync'd, I am warned "This account isn't being syced, so your calendars may not be up to date"

BUT - I CAN USE THE CALENDAR - YES ! :)

Thanks for all your help

I decided that I don't mind (much) that Google can see my calendar. But I wrestled with the decision to buy an Android phone because I had similar concerns to yours. The difference is that I knew I was selling my soul to Google. I have friends who don't trust Google, but they mostly trust Apple, and honestly, I don't think Apple is any more trustworthy. I doubt either company bears me any ill will, and both store more of my data than I am really comfortable with.

Excellent! Glad to see that that method worked. :)
