Samsung is following in the footsteps of Apple... Yes they both come out with good products, each meant for a specific individual. But, Samsung has fallen in the trap that has got a lot of people leaving Apple, that they come up with a flagship phone which updates with "minor" changes. I have a samsung currently, and the only reason i am switching is because i was disappointed to see that the phone looks practically exactly the same. Yes, internally there are significant upgrades, but you need to make your costumers feel like you are getting something new. This in my opinion will push some people away from samsung as they did apple... big company selling their name instead of innovation.
I would say they haven't gotten to that point yet. I hear htc fans complaining the s4 is just like the s3 but not so many Samsung owners. Brand equity is important, you can't go reinventing the wheel every year or two. And if you really look the s4 is more than a spec bump over the s3 and it's not like it doesn't stand toe to toe with the one. Also Samsung has the note line as another flagship where apple just has the one iphone (which they still sell ridiculous quantities of).
Out of the 3 htc was the one that had to do something radically different because they were so far behind
