There is only numbers or none. No option to display notification icons for now.

Does EMUI 5 solve the complaints people have about notifications on the honor 8? I don't own this phone but was thinking of getting it. Do you still have to go into settings to turn on notifications for every app you install?

Notifications are on as default. You Can turn them off though.
The same with background apps.

Is that new with emui 5? I read that in emui 4 notifications are off by default for each app and you have to turn them on everytime you install a new app. I don't own the phone but I got it for someone for christmas in a cyber monday deal.

Notifications are automatically on and background processing is automatically whitelisted for all apps in EMUI 5. There is still the option to turn either off though.
