I left my nexus 7 untouched with a full battery...it made it less than 24 hours before being dead.

upon review, battery usage was almost 90% by android os. any ideas what the typical battery hogs are?

You can get a good idea by installing a battery app like GSam Battery Monitor. It can give you a good breakdown of which apps and processes are using battery, as well as what is causing wakelocks (a process that wakes the device in order to execute some kind of function--frequent wakelocks can increase battery usage).

If this keeps on happening, it's worth wiping the system cache partition, especially if you haven't done so after a system update. This will clear out any old temporary system data that might cause problems--you won't lose any personal data:

  1. If your tablet is on, power it off.
  2. Press and hold Power until the device powers on, then immediately press and hold Volume Down (while still pressing Power). You will see the word Start with an arrow drawn around it.
  3. Press Volume Down twice to designate Recovery mode.
  4. Press Power to restart into Recovery mode. You will see an image of an Android robot with a red exclamation mark.
  5. While holding down Power, press Volume Up.
  6. Use the volume keys to scroll to "wipe cache partition" and press Power to select it.
  7. When complete, highlight "reboot system now" and press Power.

Sounds like a wakelock issue. Download an app called wakelock detector and it'll show you what the culprit is :)

gonna do both now. figured it was something along those lines but didnt know if there was a known issue I was missing.

after overnight the top 4 are

gmail - 8 wake locks - 29.5% of usage
google services - 201 wake locks - 18% of usage
media - 13 wake locks - 11% of usage
android system - 233 wake locks - 7.2% of usage

G-Mail can be fixed by changing the sync time from push to either manual or a longer time period.
Google services can be fixed by turning off location services and disabling Google Now
:)

well, i went to work and came home...android OS held it awake for over 9 hours (GSam battery monitor says its the "Kernel (Android OS)" that did it). So, I did the cache erase and I am starting GSam back up to see what it does from here on out.

Wow, I don't know why Google doesn't have this under control. It's a really common, really annoying issue...

hopefully it fixes it...11 hours and it half drained it and 9 hours it was awake. no wonder it only lasts 24 hours before its dead.

That's crazy dude. Have you tried disabling google now and location services? If that doesn't work I'd recommend downloading a google play store apk for a newer version that's not available yet. It somewhat fixed the issue for me

I gotta check it when i get home from work and see.

Do you use a wireless charger? There's a bug where using wireless charging can keep android devices from going into deep sleep, which affects my nexus 4. Another good comprehensive app for monitoring usage and battery life is better battery stats. wake locks, partial wakelocks, CPU states, processes, network usage, etc.

seems the cache wipe really helped. got home today and android os only held it awake 20 minutes over the last 24 hours vs. the previous 9 hours over 11 hours.

Have similar issue - Android OS keeps N7 awake. It usually starts after a couple of days (light use) and restart always returns things to normal.
Wiping cache didn't help :( , noticed drain of battery yesterday (N7 didn't sleep) after I wiped the cache.
