How can HTC be this incompetant

In a sense yes, but they kick started it themselves with well known phone reviewers in the geek world. Kind of like the nexus, you would not know about the nexus unless you do some research right? And the nexus has marketed itself very well with the whole idea of being a "Google" phone without mass marketing. If you ask your average Joe about the nexus, he won't know what you are talking about, however you might get more responses if you ask the average Joe about the HTC One because it has made a huge impact via word of mouth through internet reviews. But if you ask the average Joe what are the biggest phones out there, he will be quick to say Samsung and Apple right? The HTC markets itself this way but with it's physical features and Zoe camera as the introduction to the fresh viewer. Samsung and apple don't have to really do much but drop big bucks, it's Samsung and apple, they are well trusted throughout the entire world. People who don't review phones will most likely buy a Samsung or apple for powerhouse phones, but people who review phones will most likely think twice before buying either of those.

Good link, I actually wished I would have reviewed more phones before I bought my last phone, because shortly after I saw the HTC One X, and heard tons of good reviews on it from online users calling it a competitive beast. Instead I went with some other crap garbage phone that did not get much user review attention but I fell for it's 1080p camera and metal housing design.... I knew it had considerably less horsepower and I ended up regretting it hard. If you recall, HTC One X got zero air time, but this HTC One does have some very minimal air time. Once HTC gains enough momentum they will attempt more mass marketing, but for now they are going to play it safe. However if they find an investor to toss them tons of cash or they merge with another company, we may see the HTC One get the marketing it needs to make it a household phone name. I hear the phone is doing very well in Europe and has a little more marketing going on out there.

Off the top of my head, I only recall two One X ads - the parachute jump and the runner running to Rio Vista.

Rio Vista was pretty much an AT&T ad.

HTC needs to do more, IMO - but I don't think they can.

They're already doing a lot more than they have, and the ads themselves are a lot better.

I've only seen one, the Boom Sound commercial. I guess it's because Canadian networks are to blame. SimSubbing.

They have the digging commercial too and they also are posting banners in big events like Europe sports and sometimes on espn with sprint. So they are getting on tv now more than before. They must have given sprint a good deal for them to get on espn. They had a banner hanging on the desk where the beef nuts talk about sports, and this was during nba playoffs and still might be there too.

Just out of curiosity, if HTC are doing such a terrible job of marketing this phone, what are their peers doing that is so much better? There is no doubt that Samsung offer networks and retailers very favourable terms in order to shift product (something Apple is currently being investigated for!) but apart from any potential 'tactics' what are the competition doing to actually market their gear that HTC are not doing.

Here in the UK, if I were to list the most visible handsets going by TV ads, it would be Sony, HTC and then Samsung, I can only ever recall seeing the S4 ad once. Buying up prime retail space might be a factor but I doubt it, people here do like shop in person but they often choose their purchases on the high street before taking to the interent to search out the best deal.

Bestbuy for example, launched in the UK promising to revolutionize electrical retail. They lasted about 9 months. Yes they had knowledgable and well trained staff and there is value to that, but at the end of the day, once people have selected a product, they shop on price and Bestbuy was always 20% more expensive than the established national retailer next door.

How much does it cost to put up a banner, poster, even a sign at stores?

It may cost quite a bit more than the cost of the banner, poster or sign itself, if the spot you want to put it is already spoken for by competing, high paying, high revenue producing products. In this case it would cost whatever Best Buy calculates the space is worth to them. Heck, for all we know the other players might have some type of agreements in place granting them exclusive banner, poster and sign rights.

As far as TV in the US - my perception is that Samsung, Apple, and Verizon (anything DROID) do the most marketing for hardware. HTC is behind those three. I see more DROID DNA commercials than HTC One commercials. I can't recall ever seeing a commercial for an LG or Sony smartphone.

Companies have to pay for that kind of product placement usually. HTC, unfortunately, doesn't seem to have the money to do that. But is disappointing none-the-less. Plus, I haven't really cared for the HTC One ads I have seen. They should be highlighting the use of the camera in low light and zoes, the great design and materials, and boomsound. Instead, their pushing blinkfeed, and not even doing a good job of describing it.

I agree they should be putting out commercials about the camera, especially since that's what Samsung's commercials seem to be leading off with, but the first round of HTC commercials airing in the U.S. in late April/early May were all about Boomsound.

Pretty simple. HTC doesn't have the money. They are doing very poorly and have lost money on Android devices for years like all the other manufacturers except for Samsung. Hopefully the One is turning their fortunes around but they have a long way to go. Samsung of course makes many other things besides smartphones and tablets so have pretty much unlimited funds for marketing.
I have seen demo HTC one in a display at at least one Best Buy btw.

I have had the advantage of using a new HTC One head-to-head with the Samsung Galaxy S4 since the wife upgraded the same day. After using both, I can objectively say the the One is a better built and better designed device, but you wouldn't know it based on press and marketing.

I stopped into Best Buy yesterday (unrelated item) and noticed a display for Samsung devices that was VERY prominent, well designed and twice the footprint of Apple- HTC had ZERO representation.

Is HTC stoned, stupid or fully incompetent? I am not a fanboy per se but I have to wonder who is running the "show" for HTC because they are shooting themselves in the forehead with marketing apathy.

I know some within the industry review these boards and I ask for their opinions. If anyone from HTC is reading this, I bought the One and love it but I find it perplexing that you seem to work to undercut your own products or (at the very least) seem content with getting the proverbial sand kicked into your face by the beach-bully ****** when you offer an arguably superior product...

Please show me the financial report that says HTC isn't making a profit.

I agree with the OP they need to improve their marketing. I believe HTC recently fired their marketing VP. I did not read all the posts someone else might have pointed this out already.

Samsung and apple pay for that floor space... HTC doesn't have the money to compete with them in that respect. I'm sure they'd like to have an HTC section and in some stores, like mine, we do have an HTC one display. Manufactures also have contracts with vendors like best buy so its not like they can just move the Samsung stuff around. They pay for the space and have a contract for x number of months.

HTC currently has quite elaborate display stands in malls around the country. I was lucky enough to have one close by and see the phone before I decided to purchase. Is a great device and I'm actually, if they offer, flirt with the idea of going stock Android. I'm not using any of the Sense stuff except Zoe's, but only because my kid is never quiet and sitting still enough for a picture. That way I can find that great snapshot of her.
