Question How can I replace the default Samsung Gallery with Google gallery?

Hi

I am learning my Samsung Android phone J3V which is using Android 6( very old version).

When I text and want to attach photo, it shows it's from Samsung Gallery. I want to replace it with Google Gallery which I already INSTALLED. I went online and look, I tried to follow but I can't find what they described. This is the link from google:

it is likely that the description is for newer version of Android.


I went through "Setting>Apps", scroll to Samsung Gallery and STOP the program, I try to click Google Gallery but it does not allow me to set it as default.

Anyone has suggestion?

I have been searching, I think the closest is still Samsung Galaxy A15 5G for $200. It has Android 14, HDR camera, US version. It is much safer, don't have to worry about compatibility issue in US

I am using Twigby, I have to check with them whether this in compatible or not. I am not will to pay close to $400 for a phone. This is more a learn tool for me to learn Android that really use as a phone. Honestly, if not for my old one is too old that the menu, screen, operating steps are all out dated, I would have stuck with this old phone.

I am using Twigby as provider. I chat with them, they need the IMEI to verify whether the phone is compatible. This is what they wrote to me:

"The only way to know for sure a phone is compatible is the IMEI and our online tool. You can check for LTE and band 13 in the specs"

I have absolutely no idea what is LTE and band13 specs.

What are those. I know I can get the IMEI AFTER I bought the phone and type in something. How can I get it without buying the phone. I don't want to buy it in order to find out whether it will work or not. This is the phone I want to buy:

To set Google Photos as your default gallery on your Android 6 phone, first go to Settings > Apps, find Samsung Gallery, and tap Clear Defaults. Then, go back to Settings > Apps, find Google Photos, and tap on Open by default or similar options, setting it to Open in this app. After doing this, try attaching a photo again to see if it lets you use Google Photos. If it still doesn’t work, check for specific app permissions or defaults in your settings.

Thanks everybody that help me here. I bought two Samsung A15 5g. I talked to Samsung, they say the phone works with Verizon network and Twigby use Verizon network. So chances are high it will work. but still need IMEI number.

BUT, BUT, Amazon has it on sale for $175 today, $25 off. I BOUGHT 2. It worth my time to return if it doesn't work. But sounds like 99% chance it will work as it's UNLOCKED and US version already.

I bought 2 and received them. I typed in the IMEI numbers, THEY ARE COMPATIBLE!!!!

Now is to set it up, transferring data and all the work.

Still working on it. I just transfer all the apps, pictures, contacts and even all the text and all to the new phone.

To me, this is like a challenge. I did not ask people to help me, I went on line, downloaded the Smart Switch for the old phone to transfer data.

I intentionally find the hardest way, I can easily download to laptop using windows and upload to the new phone. BUT THAT'S TOO EASY, I DON'T LEARN ANYTHING.

I don't even use a USB cable to connect the two phones, I chose using WiFi, make the two phones talk to each other and copy over everything.

Now I can brag to my grandkids that grandpa did all that on my own, did not ask anyone to do it for me.

I've been doing all the google search on the phone instead of doing it the easy way on the laptop. The typing is still a little problem for me.

I have one stupid question. I paid $175 for my Galaxy A15 5G that is out at the end of 2023. The older Galaxy S23 is $500 and is older. Here is the comparison of both. A15 does have HDR and even video image stabilizer. Why S23 still 2 1/2 times the cost? How do people justify paying a lot more on some phones?

I thought it's always the newer the better. It is true for laptops, Ones that was tip top 2yrs ago and cost thousands easily beaten by a $500 ones today. This is technology.

Hi Alan, to change your default gallery app on your Samsung J3V from Samsung Gallery to Google Photos (given that Android 6 has some limitations), follow these steps:

1. Open Settings and go to Apps.
2. Locate and select Samsung Gallery.
3. Scroll down and tap on "Clear Defaults" or "Set as default" to remove any existing default settings.

After that, try opening a photo. You should see a prompt asking which app to use. Choose Google Photos and select "Always" if you get that option. If this doesn't work, you can open Google Photos directly to manage your images. Since Android 6 is an older version, changing default apps might not be as easy. If these steps don’t resolve the issue, you may have to open Google Photos manually each time until you can upgrade to a newer Android version. Hope this helps!
