Can't save to extsdcard

I'm running Android 5.0.1 (the GPE version) on a rooted T-Mobile Galaxy S4. I'm having trouble with getting apps to recognize the existence of my external SD card (named extsdcard). All the apps seem to be recognizing the emulated SD card, and seeing that it's emulated, deciding that they can't access the SD card at all. For example, Camera FV-5 doesn't show the external card as an option for saving photos. App-to-SD-card apps don't work (one I did try told me the problem was that my SD card was emulated, even though I have a physical card). Also, in the Apps settings, the move-to-sd button isn't available.

Is there a code I can add somewhere to get my apps to ignore the emulated card and use the extsdcard instead? Or is there a better custom rom option that will allow it? A note on custom roms - I went through a bunch of 5.1.1-based roms and went back to the GPE rom because it doesn't crawl or have the Chrome issues the newer roms seem to have, so I'm reticent to switch to something else unless I have to.

Re: Can't save to extsdcard

The ROM (custom or stock) has to be rooted. Then you can use an app like External 2 Internal SD (Root) to mount the external card as sd0 and the emulated card as sd1 (apps don't look at the names, they're looking for sd0, which is normally the emulated card) or you can use an app like NextApp SDFix: KitKat Writable MicroSD (root) to make the external card writable by media apps. (Or go into the file it modifies and give the user everyone rw rights to the card, then all apps can use it.)
