How do I assign speed dial on Nexus 5X?

No option to assign speed dial in the Phone app. Anyone figure this out? Such a basic feature...

I think you're right. My contacts show as squares, tap one and the phone is calling. This is much better and faster than remembering a number.

Or add direct call shortcuts to the homescreen via the widgets/shortcuts menu.

This is correct. I have all the people I call the most as favorites, and they show up on the front of my dialer.

I find this even quicker than having to type the speed dial number in. Also, there is the added benefit of not having to remember what number belongs to what contact.
