How does WiFi work?

Couple of WiFi related questions:

1)When my Eris connects to a WiFi network does it automatically use that method for all data transmissions? (web, email, app market, weather widget, etc.)

2)Will being connected to a WiFi network drain the battery more than usual?

3)If WiFi is turned on, but it's NOT connected to a network, will that have any effect on battery life?

1. Everything but Voice, SMS and MMS
2. Yes
3. Yes. Will drain as it does when connected, unless it's scanning. Then it will drain more.
