Its not samsung's fault that an app is broken. There are other apps to do video chat and use AIM that work just fine on the Epic. I couldn't log out of AIM on my Epic. Now that I think of it, I think its because I have it on my Hero, which is still on and connected to the internet. Just pulled it up and it says its connected. That was probably my issue. I can't log out of AIM. My guess is that its killing the battery switching between being logged in on my hero and my Epic. I could try it tomorrow, but I have a long day in a boring store, and I'm going to need my battery so I can watch my Gators!
my battery is pretty bad so far. i've had my epic for about 3 days and so far i'd say the battery life is only marginally better than my palm pre. which is not good. if i take it off the charger at 9 the battery will be dead around 4 pm with moderate use.
I read an interested post regarding Sprint Zone. Apparently the Sprint Zone service runs constantly in the background, eating up CPU cycles and draining battery. If you open Sprint Zone, click Menu and Settings, deselect all options and choose the update interval as "Only on Startup", you should see a positive result. The "Only on Startup" refers to startup of the Sprint Zone app, not startup of the phone. People are reporting great results using this tweak. In addition to doing this, I used Titanium Backup to freeze this and the other Sprint apps I do not use, rather than uninstalling them (just in case I want them).

Thanks for the tip. Just updated those settings. I'm on my second Epic already. The first one wouldn't hold a charge for more than four hours, the new one goes about 6 hours and then dies.
Honestly, I am 100% positive that the single biggest battery drain on this phone is 3g data. As soon as I installed Juicedefender my battery life went way way up (I will qualify that with the statement that I am still in my first week of use of the phone/battery). I think with a couple of firmware updates for the radio and data sync settings/options, this phone will be an absolute monster. For now, either disable auto-sync and background data, or install Juicedefender to ensure that your 3g data connection isn't constantly pulling data and killing your battery. Juicedefender, way moreso than ATK, has made this phone last all day for me, where all day equals 15 hours or so, which I think will be extended significantly longer with firmware updates and, obviously, custom roms!

The only thing keeping this phone from being truly Epic is battery life so far. No other complaints.

Ya, up to 3 bars, bu sometimes will be all greyed out.
The thing is, the pre and evo don't seem to have trouble in the same place.

This might be because Samsung used a dirty hack to make the Galaxy S phone CDMA friendly. This was the way back with the Hero and we started flashing 2.1 ROMS.
Go into battery information and check out the Cell Standby info. Time without a signal is what's important. If that is high... like double digits high, it's because Samsung didn't fix that little issue of trying to find a CDMA tower over a GSM tower. Sigh... we might need to wait for a fix, but in the meantime, people need need need to call in about it. Tell them 5 hours of battery life isn't acceptable, nor is installing Juice Defender (it totally makes your smart phone a dumb phone...)

My pre would not last 3 hours in weak signal areas (my workplace). The Epic seems to last 2x as long. But then I do a few things different. I turned off auto sync and the GPS. For some reason, foursquare, yelp, and maps doesn't need gps to be on, so I hardly turn that on. I also use the task manager and kill all unused apps quite frequently.
I was using the Epic moderately today (outdoors, not at work) and was able to get it to last 12 hours today. But I still needed to turn off the phone radio for the last 2 hours.
So not quite there. Need more battery life tweaks...
50% time without a signal... but isn't that just becaue 3g is off an wifi is on, or is that for all cell signals?
And ya, I already got a refund for juice defender. Id rather recharge the phone than lose instant gmail push.

Like keith said, turning off auto update turns it into a dumbphone glued to a pmp.
I actually kind of miss my intercept because I didn't spend even one minute worriying about battery life on that device, and I would leave all the radios and updates running all day long.

If we all have the exact same number, it might be a bug with the way the stat is reported.
I'm going to be in a 4g area for the next few days, ill see how that changes things.

I am getting this too, in a way. After charging overnight on the dock, my battery widget shows 100%. But if I pull it off the dock and immediately put back in, it shows 97%. It takes at least half an hour to charge the remaining 3%. After I did this yesterday I was able to get well over 14+ hours on the phone. This is was under moderate use...a couple calls, some games, text, GPS and other random stuff.
New to this board. Have had an Epic since 8/31. It is a July '10 build. I use it for Gmail, internet, and phone primarily. Lots of internet. Rarely GPS. Here is what I am finding. (1) My battery has gotten better in terms of holding charge in standby mode. Been doing bump charging, etc. Drains very slowly if not using the phone. (2) When I make a call, the battery does not drain too badly either. (3) When I use the Internet my battery drains like crazy. It is insane how fast. Display on both the phone and the browser setting are at the lowest brightness level, b/c frankly it is a pretty bright screen even on the lowest setting. At the end of yesterday it indicated 80% of my battery use was the SCREEN display. Yikes. (4) My gps locked in within 5-10 seconds of turning it on outdoors in gps mode (the wireless carrier mode was turned off). (5) My capacitave buttons work fine search, home, menu. The "back" button works pretty well ... sometimes it requires multiple touches, sometimes it works first touch ... I find if I press and hold for a split second longer than you might expect it seems to register all the time. (6) I have had these periodic "crashes". Phone sitting in standby mode and suddenly the buttons will be lit up and I cannot get the screen to come on, etc. If I pull the battery it restarts, but that is about the only option I have stumbled upon. This is probably my most annoying issue.
