How often do you upgrade your phone?

Just got a new Pixel 2XL. I went 22 months with the last phone, which was the longest time ever.

Me usually when a device either becomes obsolete, unreliable or insecure (my KitKat based previous phone had sooooo many security holes and was the cause of so many hacks on my GMail)... I usually don't get a new device until I see a big reason to do so. I used my first Android device (Galaxy Tab 2 7.0) for nearly half a decade...

Pardon the necro, but this seems like a fun conversation...

I can't count the number of times that I've told myself that "this phone" will be the one that I keep for longer than a year. Nope. Since I've gotten into smartphones, I've kept two phones longer than two years: the original Droid, and the Turbo. Everything else 18 months or less...

I always say this time I'm going to hold on to my phone for as long as possible and then a year goes by and I can't scratch the itch quick enough. But THIS TIME, I'm going to hold on to my phone for as long as possible.

I didn't plan on upgrading (switching) from my Nokia Lumia 830 - but Windows was losing app options (tears). Now on Android.

Every two years or so. Unless the phone I got craps out and I have to purchase a new one, I am not in a hurry. No carrier branded or associated devices. Direct, factory unlocked purchase. A carrier to me is just an unwanted middleman. If I didn't need their cellular network for the phone's basic communications functions, I'd abandon them in a heartbeat.

Besides, I only go for entry level to midrange devices. No point in overly spending for some already overpriced handset... cough... Apple...cough...

I also prefer Android One devices. As I've said before, a smartphone is not a "lifestyle choice" for me and I have no brand loyalty in terms of choosing one that is anykind of status symbol.

Give me a solid, well built device with decent specs and battery life and a regular security patch and OS update schedule for a few years, and that is enough.
