[HOW-TO] Bluetooth Tether from Android phone to XOOM (NO root or app required)

Its my job as a dad to show him the error of his ways. I will admit I liked his big iPod touch ooops I meant IPad until Xoom release day.

So here is the process for tethering an iPhone to the Xoom:

Jailbreak iPhone
Get MyWi 4.0 from Cydia
Put Xoom in airplane mode
Turn on bluetooth on Xoom
Turn on bluetooth within MyWi on iPhone
Initiate pairing on Xoom
Click the tool button on the Xoom on the line for the paired iPhone
Switch on tethering
Cancel your verizon data plan

I am gonna hold onto my verizon data plan for at least a few days just to make sure this is stable etc.....

But soon

Yeah, I liked the iPad too, but in my opinion the iPad is like a bigger version of mobile device whereas the XOOM is more like compact and simplified version of a laptop, if that makes any sense

I guess what I'm trying to say is the XOOM is very much a laptop replacement whereas the iPad simply isnt

I'm only going to use this for the unlikely event that I have used up my 3GB monthly allowance and dont have access to wifi

I like having the data plan on my xoom at all times, thats why I did the 2 year activation

I just tried it with my roommates DX and it worked flawlessly. What's the difference in bluetooth hardware? Both running 2.2.1 kernel 2.6.32.9-g.

Glad to here its working. I dont really know much about bluetooth from a hardware standpoint but that could be a deciding factor in which devices this works with.

I got it tethered now and both iPhone and xoom say that they are connected but the xoom doesn't have an internet connection....

This is really starting to annoy me. Guess I'll head over to xda-developers and ask them for a custom rom that supports ad hoc networks. I know they made one before

Droid 3 should be coming out later this year, keep an open mind ;)

Droid Bionic for me.....

As a test I went back to wifi for awhile and just connected thru BT and it connected right away

I actually like the iPhone....just didn't like the iPad since it was a supersized iPod touch with Wi-Fi problems. Kinda miss the ad hoc Wi-Fi, Netflix, and Hulu Plus support of it though.

Let's see what Apple will present this Wednesday.

Awesome, and yeah the Bionic is appealing but personally I like having the keyboard on my droid. I had an OG Droid and now an R2D2 Droid 2. I'm 95% confident I'll be getting the Droid 3 when it comes out because I used a family members upgrade for the Droid 2 which means I'll be eligible later this year :D

Worked for me with a droid pro... had to click on the wrench button (for options) in the bluetooth area and then put tethering on... worked immediatly!

It's actually in bluetooth settings, under paired devices, click the wrench and hit tethering.... then the second icon showed up for me

kingboarder - make sure you are in airplane mode and you initiate the tethering in the menu after touching the sprocket looking button and then hit tethering. It won't work if you try to just click on your phone name to connect.

I also had a D1 and liked having a keyboard, but when I saw the pics of the DX I knew I had to have it.

You'd be suprised to see how quickly you get used to on screen keybords...

The way I look at the whole iPhone vs. Android thing is like this. The things that the iPhone has over Android is because the app hasn't been ported to Android yet. But the stuff that Android has over the iPhone is due to the fact that Apple places limitations on their devices and software. Based on this, I feel that Android will hands down be better in the long run and I just wanted to accompany it during its journey to the top. ;)

So I found out that the chip is the same for the Droid and DroidX. Does anyone know anything about the drivers in the two devices?

Awesome, I'll add Droid Pro to the list and also I'm going to mention the wrench in the steps. I didnt have to enable it personally it just did it on its own but obviously its different for different devices.

I did...it actually says 'tethered in there and my iPhone has the blue ribbon to show it's in tethered mode.
But when I try to open a web she on the xoom, it just gives me an error which says that there is no internet connection......

Do you have the on-demand feature enabled in mywi or just the bluetooth tether?

yeah I use the on-screen keyboard on my D2 probably about 80% of the time but that other 20% would be exceptionally frustrating if I didnt have a keyboard
