[HOW-TO] Bluetooth Tether from Android phone to XOOM (NO root or app required)

Tethered just no internet

Followed the directions and have my Xoom and DX tethered. When I try and surf to a page it starts to load then hangs, never resolves. Tried this with DX in wireless and on 3G. With 3G it got further (blue line across top of stock browser) than on WiFi, but still hangs.

Suggestions????

Newton1221 - Sorry I was not clearer. The page loads fine on the DX just not on the Xoom.
candog - trying not to root the DX.

Thanks all

If your Droid X wont load the page then why would your XOOM load it? When you're tethering you are sharing the same internet.

This works - I did it yesterday. Xoom and the Original Droid.

1. Root your Motorola DROID. [Instructions]
2. Download Wireless Tether from the market and install on your DROID.
3. Open Wireless Tether and switch it to use Bluetooth.
Menu>Settings>Use Bluetooth

4. Exit Wireless Tether.
5. From your XOOM, set your device to Airplane mode.
6. Head into the Bluetooth settings on both your DROID and XOOM and turn it on.
7. Check the box on both to make ?Discoverable? and then ?Scan for nearby devices.?
8. Once both are seen, head back into Wireless Tether and turn it on.

9. From your XOOM tap on ?DROID? and ?Pair? both devices when prompted.

10. Each device should say ?Paired but not connected.?
11. From your XOOM, tap on the Wrench icon next to your paired DROID.

12. You should now see a Tethering option. Tap on it.

13. You are now tethered. Enjoy.

Huge hat tip to Nvious1 over at XDA for getting the ball rolling on this guide.

Not to be a negative nancy but tethering with root isn't really new. The point of this method was that you don't have to root or install any apps. Its still good information you provided so thumbs up to that but i think the appeal of this was the fact that you dont have to root.

i would try rebooting and starting everything form scratch, it should work on the Droid X so I'm sure you will be able to get it to work eventually

Thanks Newton1221 I'll give that a try. I've run this by a couple of the IT guys here and they are really interested in getting this worked out (I'm the guinea pig) since the company frowns on rooting our DX's.

Dumb Question

Stupid question. Does this method eliminate people from having to pay the $20 charge for using the wifi hotspot?

I don't know if I would go telling your provider about this but I'm pretty sure they wont find out which means it shouldn't cost you anything.

Thanks for the info.

How did you root the droid. i have the latest software update and i can't seem to root it.

Has anyone tried with blackberry?

I read this thread, and saw the iphone and many android cell phones, but has anyone tried using the BB with the xoom? I am looking at getting the xoom wifi, and am researching tethering via blackberry. I am able to tether my laptop with my blackberry, just curious if it works for the xoom.

What do you use for tether on your BB?

I paired the devices and connected them. Everything works great...for about two minutes. Then nothing. I did reboot both devices to be sure and I get the same behavior. What I did notice was that the 3G connection on my DX keeps resetting itself. The 3G icon on the status bar will disappear and reappear over and over again. If I leave it connected it will slowly pull email in and update twitter but it is totally unusable for internet access, youtube, etc.

Anyone else experiencing this?

I can't seem to find any way to get the fascinate or a droid 1 to connect, I will keep trying but if someone comes up with a way please post it up. Currently I get to where they are paired but not connected and I'm not offered the tetherig option.

works perfectly thank you! After I initially was able to set up bt tethering from my jailbroken iPhone I tried a second time and couldn't get the devices to pair. With your method no problems!

OK, I think I may have found a potential solution. I am running the xoom with my x- I was experiencing the same issues as others....connected, tethered but no Internet. I rebooted both, and followed the steps but before I paired I made certain that the wifi was disconnected on my phone. I then completed the steps...all is right with the world, speed is good, downloaded pictures, etc. I just have to work on my connection to my sling box. Thank you for listing the steps. I didn't want to root (I know everyone says it is easy, but I am a chicken!). Now I have two days to cancel my $20 plan and pay the extra $200??????? Any suggestions?

I just set this up....did it in under two minutes and I'm up and running. I think I'm going to cancel my VZW data plan, at least until the 4G service comes out or they block this from working with a software update.

Now if I could get it to tether to my laptop that has a 4G usb modem I think I can increase the speed. Also, have a unlimited data plan.
