[How to] Factory Restore (or Fix a Bricked Phone)

You didn't need to goto XDA to find that out... Oh well.. I tried...

Sorry I wasn't clear. I had to take my phone to someone personally and he is a member of XDA which I found out later. You guys where right but I didn't have a good computer (I used my cousins) nor the cable to fix my phone. He didn't fix my phone for free! This was my only option at this point.

You would have to use a program called Odin on your computer to flash it back to Eclair 2.1 (DI18). Note, this wouldn't be considered rooting or anything like that it would simply restore your phone back to factory stock Eclair 2.1 (DI18).

Procedure #2 will take you back to Eclair 2.1 (DI18)

What Paul said, or try a Factory Reset, if your puter is not currently available to run odin. A Factory Reset will clean up most issues....

How to return to a Stock Device?

I'm running a Custom ROM on my Epic. Let's say I want to return to a STOCK EPIC with the latest updates(FROYO/EC05). Then, what would be the best way to start using custom ROMS again? IE: Rooting etc.. Basically, I'm asking what is the best way if I want to start from the beginning with a fresh device and the starting customizing? THANKS!

Procedure #1=Froyo EB13, Procedure #2=Eclair 2.1 (DI18)

Then grab the update.zip corresponding with the OS you need to upgrade to EC05. I'm not sure if they are still pushing the OTA.

Sprint Samsung Epic 4g Official Froyo EC05 [update.zip method/Custom Odin Packages]

Then you can continue onward however you would like from there.

Maybe a dumb question, but to restore via Odin, do I need to turn on USB Debugging?

If you restore to "out of the box"

Do you restore to ONLY how YOUR (DI18) phone came or can you restore to any way you want (K28, EB13, etc...)?

You can use the following link to restore to either Eclair 2.1 (DI18) or Froyo EB13. This would be a complete wipe of your phone (sdcard will remain untouched) and it will appear as it did when purchased depending on which version came with your device (it really doesn't matter which one they are both official)

A. You could have a bad download of the Odin .tar file for Froyo EB13

B. You can try removing the ".md5" from the end of the file leaving it as "SPH-D700-EB13-8Gb-REL.tar"

C. Pull you battery out, leave it out and hook up & boot into download mode and attempt to run it again with out your battery in the device.

D. Leave all anti virus turned off/disabled on your computer and you can also pull the sdcard out of your device. Try a different cable/port.

E. Just make sure Auto Reboot only is checked.

See if any suggestions of those help.

So I pulled the battery, turned off all the spywared, and pulled the sd card, repair installed the drivers again and terrifiedly (is that a word?) rebooted into download mode, and it seems to be working, correction, green screen it worked and is now rebooting,
thanks for always helping on here!
Any guess as to what I did that worked?

I want to bet it was the battery pull that did it... I don't know why but the battery pull always seems to iron out the wrinkles when it comes to Odin... There are a few times where it doesn't help but most of the time it does the trick...

Best of luck to you, glad I could help.

once again i just want to thank everyone for all the fantastic information in these forums! i tried to get a little fancy last night and install a different kernel into the ACE ROM, which resulted in completely bricking my phone (and proving i'm not as smart as i thought). i thought i was completely screwed (couldn't flash a recovery, couldn't recover w/ odin, eventually couldn't even get it to boot to clockwork), and was about to call sprint and report the phone "lost". i decided to give it one more try on a different computer today, and w/ the help of the forums i was able to run a factory restore, then re-download clockwork, re-root, and re-install ACE 2.0. i cannot thank you guys enough for all the information and support that is available in these forums! this site is a lifesaver (and a phone-saver), you guys rock hard :D
