if I upgrade to from V9 to VD, does this mean I will lose all my apps?
Your /data is preserved so it can potentially continue working, but any number of things could go wrong, so you should have them backed up just in case.

I finally got around to doing this, aside from a minor hiccup (noob move on my part) this went very smooth. Thanks for doing all this Rob.

Quick boot doesnt run because it needs root access and after i install V9 install Xoinia clockwork and then install VD its not rooted anymore so ya cant get into the custom recovery cause of that. and i have a phone with the new screen. I had to follow step 2.

For the quickboot steps you can substitute
1) power down phone
2) home + vol- + power

This will get you into recovery, same as quickboot would have done.

I guess that means screencast only works with USB debugging turned on?

Why are you using z4root. You already have root since you have CWMA recovery installed.

You could just use the screencast with recovery as Drew suggested.

Just put the TR1.8 zip file on your sdcard, name it update.zip

Then boot into CWMA recovery (home + vol- + power) and select
apply sdcard:update.zip

Vol-
Menu

If you are adventurous you could do it all blindly without screencast.

When TR1.8 is done installing, either it'll reboot or you should choose to reboot, I forget which.

Once TR1.8 is finished booting, you'll have root and can install CWMA v1.2518.4 so you don't have to deal with a blank screen again.

actually cwma didnt install i forgot to mentian that is why i was installing z4root. to install that cwma you told me about. now i just need to get my android dev kit running so i can see where on the menu i need to press to reenable usbdev mode. on top of that i have to use the phones internet connection to do all this(pay for it, cant afford it anymore) so Im in a rather tight spot. i had an older model of the phone but it got jacked. now on top of that my internet got hella slow. either because of the rain or because sprint knows what if doing:P so now that adk is taking hella long to download and is timing out hella bad :[ if anyone could pm me a picture or two of the menu in setting and applications all the way up to getting usb dev enabled...that would be cool.

You should have your phone connected by USB to your PC through this.

Press the "back" button 5 times to make sure you are out of any menus.

Press and hold voice command (button above camera) until you hear a beep.

Say very clearly "Application Settings"

You'll hear 2 beeps.

There will be a prompt on your screen asking if you want to open "Application Settings" It will have two choices [OK] and [Cancel]

To select OK locate the point about 1" from bottom left of screen, anywhere on the left half of screen should be fine. The width of the OK button is half the screen.

Now make sure you phone is oriented in *Landscape* mode.

There will be 4 options

Unknown sources
Manage applications
Running services
Development

Development is what you want. It is located at the bottom of the Landscape screen. Just about 1/8" to 1/4" from the bottom edge (in landscape mode, the bottom edge is actually the side of the phone). Press anywhere in that area, the option spans the entire width of the phone.

Now you will be on the Development page. It will have 3 options. The page will have status bar at the top, then a line with the name of the category "Development" then the 3 options.

USB debugging
Stay awake
Allow mock locations

USB debugging is the one you want. It is about 1/2" from the top of the screen (in landscape mode, top edge is side edge of phone). Press USB debugging.

There will be a confirmation prompt "Allow USB debugging?" with OK and Cancel as options. In landscape mode the buttons each take up half the screen. OK is on the left half of the screen about 1/4" from the bottom edge (in landscape bottom edge is side edge)

If you are successful, you should hear a bunch of USB sounds on your PC and notification sounds on your phone.

If not, press "back" button 5 times to get out of any menus and start again.
