How to remove the camera shutter sound?

OP, which carrier are you on? With most Sprint phones, you can't turn the shutter sound off because Sprint won't allow you to.

Also, there are alternative camera apps that silence the shutter.

I like to take pics of my toddler. The shot is ruined when he hears that dang shutter sound because he stops whatever he is doing.

This is one frustration with Android (coming from someone who is probably doing back to it). Something as basic as turning sound of the camera completely off involves, among others; rooting, looking for and editing xml files, side loading apks and the issue is different on different carriers. Good lord.

I don't know if it is android in general. Just certain carriers/manufacturers. I have a nexus 4, stock, not rooted and no camera noise. One thing I loved coming from the galaxy s3.

At least there *are* actually ways to configure things that the device manufacturer won't allow. Regarding the carrier thing, it's usually just Verizon phones that tend to be oddballs (in the US). If Apple didn't include an option to mute the shutter sound on the iPhone (do they?), I'm sure you're options for a DIY solution would be far less available.

US Cellular plays that game too. Requires root to "fix".

You have GOT to be joking right? Read what you just said and tell me you aren't kidding. You really think, even at it's LOUDEST capacity, that your shutter sound would be heard, let alone interrupt kids, or even one kid signing at a school concert? That's that best example you could come up with?
Unless you are taking pictures at a funeral OR candids that you aren't supposed to, there is no reason to turn off your shutter sound. It's just not that loud. Those that want it off simply don't want people to know you are taking their pic.

And as for turning off my phone at the movies. I download torrents. I wouldn't pay the outrageous prices in the theater, and can't stand dealing with the ignorant children.
Either way, turning off your ringer in a movie, is few and far between turning off your shutter noise. Come on give your head a shake. You are making no sense.

So...you're calling people out for wanting to disable their shutter sound (for reasons that *may* be completely legitimate), yet openly admit to stealing and copyright infringement? Pot calling the kettle black if you ask me.

Sometimes the camera shutter simply makes it difficult to capture "candid" photos. I understand that there are creepy people out there that kinda ruin it for the rest of us, but I'd like to think most of the folks here asking this question aren't doing it for shady reasons. (But who knows...maybe I'm just being naive)

Now, since you mentioned it, I will say something about downloading torrents... Most are illegal and infringe on federal copyright laws. To me that's kind of creepy. We were all ignorant children at one time. Some grow up, some don't.

Sorry some of us live in the great country of Canada...Maybe you've heard of it? It's right above you? And in this magically land our powers that be understand that we have the right to download whatever we want, and have ruled in the Supreme Court of Canada, that "downloading a Torrent is no different than photocopying a page from a book at a library."
Long story short. It's LEGAL IN CANADA! As long as we don't sell or distribute But hey...Thanks for your knowledgeable 2 cents and the picture of the 2 pitbulls that ARE Illegal in Canada! At least in Ontario.

Read above. You may want to educate yourself on other Countries laws before you make yourself look like a fool again. :)

I'm not knocking the advantages of configuring things on Android, it is one of the things that drew me to my GS4. But don't you think that muting the shutter sound should be as simple as muting the phone?

I'm hesitant to even post this but, yes, the shutter sound can be silenced on the iPhone by muting the phone.

First, my apologies for not considering that you may be posting from outside the US. However, torrent downloading is illegal in many parts of the world outside of the US, and I am actually semi-familiar with the state of copyright laws in Canada and know that it's kind of a "grey area" in terms of actual laws on the books, the interpretation of said laws, and the willingness of authorities to prosecute...so more power to you if you're able to get away with it. Frankly my issue wasn't with the downloading of torrents (I'd be calling the kettle black myself), I was really just trying to point out that not everyone that wants to turn off the shutter sound is trying to take pictures up ladies' skirts, and that to many the activity you admit to doing is seen as immoral as well (regardless of the actual laws of your country of residence). I'll just end it at that though, I really wasn't trying to start anything.

You were able to defend your right to download torrents, and I'm sure most of the folks here asking about shutter sound can defend their intentions as well.

It's an issue because there are actually laws in certain places that require electronic camera devices to have a shutter sound (yes, I do think that is ridiculous). There was even a bill introduced in congress a few years to make this a federal law, though as far as I know that bill nor any subsequent ones have ever passed. My guess is that certain carriers remove this setting to be in compliance "just in case", so that it can't come back and bite them in the arse later.

So to clarify, taking someone else's creative works without compensation is legal in Canada. Fair enough. Silencing a camera shutter is legal in the US and implies nothing more than a desire to turn off an annoying noise.

I am pretty sure however that name calling doesn't sit well on the forum.

You are right. The name calling does not sit well. There is no need to call others names to prove a point. If someone wants to disable a shutter sound, they should not be belittled or have their morality questioned because of it. Also, here at android central, we do not promote the discussion or act of endorsing piracy, even if your country has legalized it. Please reign this discussion back on subject. Thank you.

Done deal, we both have good points. And I appreciate your educated response! Well said!

Interesting, didn't know that.

Am I missing something? I currently have the GS4 on both Sprint and T-Mobile and when I'm on mute, I have no shutter sound.

You're not missing anything...on the Verizon version however, that option is disabled and you can't change it (unless your device is rooted or you circumvent it using an app).

sorry if I insist but....WHICH app can do that? :( all of you are telling me that there are apps that do this, but which ones?? Can you please tell me just one?

It is mentioned in the OP and several times in the first page..."Enforced Stream Silencer". It's not in the Play Store, you have to sideload it...and even then, the complaint by the OP was that is isn't working...

You can not with the Verizon version of the camera app. Search play store for camera and you will see several replacement camera apps that will.
