How to remove the camera shutter sound?

I've been looking for a fix for this too, for those times I don't want to advertise that I'm taking selfies in public and those other times when you don't want to break the peace... I'm actually hard of hearing (wear 2 hearing aids) and I find the sound is alarmingly loud!!!

Anyway, under Settings\My Device\ Accessibility, go to the Hearing section and tick 'Turn off all sounds'. Shutter sound gone! It won't do to leave it like this all the time as it turns off the receiver voice as well, but I find it's a quick fix without having to get rooted. ;)

As I said, this doesn't work on my phone, sadly :/ it's clear that my version needs to be rooted. Nothing else works.

Hey I was the same too but I finally figuted out how to turn it off .. so basically when you turn the sound down there a setting option that shows sounds for ringtone and sound for media.. turn the media one all the down.. I would post a picture of how to do it but I cant on here

I already tried this too. It doesn't work on my phone.

Now I'm ok anyway, thanks to the Silent Camera Pro application. By the way seems that my phone is a different model or something, I really CAN'T shut down the sound. It's impossible without rooting or this app.

Hey guys. I bought my s4 yesterday and I like almost everything about the phone. When I realised this problem, I googeled it. None of these suggestions seemed very suitable for me since i don`t want to root my phone.

I found a solution that will help me take silent photos whenever I need it. Once it is setup properly it will launch the camera in silent mode as quick as usual.

1.Download Profile Scheduler + from play store. (been using this app constantly for 2 years. strongly recomend it!!! )

2. Create a new profile and name it f.ex “camera” .Then adjust all sound settings to “0″

3. Set vibration for ring and notification to “off”

4. Scroll down to “launch app” and select “camera”.

5. Set Profile scheduler+ widget wherever you want. When you push widget and select your new profile, it will launch the camera in 0,5 seconds.

- When done taking pictures just go to widget and tap another predefined profile of your choice to get sound settings back. after 1second, the phone is back the way it was.

Install Camspy from Google Play. Not only does it turns off the sound but also hides the camera preview. Although, its app looks a bit odd from presentation point of view (imo), it does the job well. Search 'camspy' on google play.

I have the Sprint variant and all I have to do is put the phone on vibrate or silent.

It's nice to see that my thread still active after almost one year :)

by the way, I'm still ok with the "Silent Camera Pro" app. It does what it has to.

Sorry some of us live in the great country of Canada...Maybe you've heard of it? It's right above you? And in this magically land our powers that be understand that we have the right to download whatever we want, and have ruled in the Supreme Court of Canada, that "downloading a Torrent is no different than photocopying a page from a book at a library."
Long story short. It's LEGAL IN CANADA! As long as we don't sell or distribute But hey...Thanks for your knowledgeable 2 cents and the picture of the 2 pitbulls that ARE Illegal in Canada! At least in Ontario.

Read above. You may want to educate yourself on other Countries laws before you make yourself look like a fool again. :)

Last time I checked in Canada, and the US it is LEGAL to take pictures in public, even of other people and even without sound warnings. There are plenty of reasons to not want a shutter sound on your camera, and its none of your business why someone doesn't.
Just because the reasons that come to YOUR mind are morally corrupt doesn't mean everyones does.

What? My post had nothing to do with LEGALITIES of taking photos in the US or CANADA! You might want to try to read a post before you reply and look like a fool. I was speaking out downloading TORRENTS!

This technique is very useful as the camera settings aren't always there in feature.xml.

Also keep in mind that there may be a half-dozen or more separate ogg files for various camera sounds--autofocus, timer, start/stop camcorder, and so on. Rename any or all of them as you need, depending on how you want your camera to behave.

If your phones rooted....
Goto root/system/media/ui

Under ui , look for the file shutter.ogg .... Just rename it toanything eg shuttrr_no.ogg
Do the same for files by the camera
Reboot...
Voila!!!!
Camera sounds are gone...
Enjoy!!!

It isn't that hard to restore unless you throw a custom ROM on it and it isn't the one for your phone.. Then you brick it.
well then, how can I root it, if I want to try?

and how can I restore it, after?

If a bricked phone will at least power on, and it's one of the more popular models, you'll probably be able to get it working regardless of how you screwed it up. Just search Youtube for the appropriate instructional video; I always recommend QBKing77, provided he has created one for the phone you have. Of course, this will amount to a factory reset and you will lose all your device data, but that's far preferable to being the proud owner of a $700 paperweight.

nah, thanks but now it works normally. I think one of the last firmwares fixed it :) I didn't need to root the phone and I disinstalled all the applications related to the camera (except the basic one).

This method has worked for me in the past in providing a permanent solution to the problem. Likewise it worked yesterday when I made these changes to my S5, but today my camera is clicking again. And this is happening even though the altered file names are still in place.

ETA: I think this happens only when Picture Stabilization is enabled (not sure if the S4 has this). After booting up, the camera is silent to begin with. But if PS is enabled and the lighting is low enough to trigger it, then a warning pop-up appears; after which the camera clicks until I disable PS.

So I think I'll be flashing a ROM today--something I really didn't want to do since I prefer to keep the stock ROM even when I do root.

So unless you are a creeper, and taking pictures you shouldn't be of people you shouldn't be why is it so important to remove the shutter sound, it's not even that loud

(Bolding mine)

It's ridiculously loud, much more so than with a typical conventional camera. I can't speak for others but for me it's the fact that I don't want to disturb the people around me with that irritating "SHHWwweeee-CLICK".

I haven't used a conventional camera in years, but if memory serves the shutter noise on one of those is far less intrusive.
